3.3 Solving Equations with Word Problems

Translating Mathematical terms into English terms:

Addition Subtraction Multiplication Division Equals

+ – x ÷ =

Increase Decrease
“of”
Sum Difference
Multiply Quotient “is”
More Less
Product Divide Result
Plus Minus
Times
Take away

Example 1: Write an algebraic expression using one variable.

a) 3 times a number _______________

b) a number decreased by 3 _______________
c) twice the width increased by 3 _______________

Example 2: Write an equation using one variable.

a) A number increased by 35 is 82 _______________

b) Five times a number is 185 _______________
c) Four times a number less 47 is 293 _______________
d) Gina’s age 5 years ago was 10. _______________

STEPS to Solving Word Problems:

1) Write “let statements” to define variables.

2) Create an equation.

3) Solve the equation.

4) Check solution using LS/RS method.

5) Write a conclusion using a “therefore” statement.

Example 3: Three times a number plus 4 is 16. Find the number.

Example 4: Determine two consecutive numbers whose sum is 135.

Example 5: Abdul is 6 years older than his brother Ali. The sum of their ages is 38.
What are their ages?
Example 6: Ms. Smith has $21.90 made up of dimes and quarters.
If there are 117 coins in total, how many quarters are there? How many dimes are there?

Example 7: The length of a rectangle is 3 times the width plus 5. If the perimeter of the
rectangle is 74 m, determine the dimensions (length and width).

Example 8: A pair of Gucci eyeglasses costs $75 more than a pair of Ray Ban eyeglasses.
Together, they cost $725. How much does each cost individually?
