WEEK 1: LESSON 1

SCHOOL LEVEL LEARNING AREA DATE TIME ROLL

GRADE 8 MATHEMATICS

Strand: Numbers
Sub Strand: Integers; Classification of integers

Specific Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the lesson, the learner should be able to:
- Define integers.
- Identify positive natural numbers and negative natural numbers.
- Classify integers into positive natural numbers and negative natural numbers.
- Appreciate the use of integers.

Key Inquiry Question:

- What are integers?
Core competencies Values PCIs

• Creativity and • Respect Environmental education

imagination • Unity

Learning Resources:
- EAEP: Smart Minds; Mathematics Learner’s Book Grade 8 pg. 1-3
- Ruler
- Digital devices

Organisation of Learning:

Introduction (5 minutes)
- Review the previous lesson by asking students about natural numbers and their properties.
- Guide learners to read pages 1-3 of the Mathematics Learner’s Book, focusing on definitions
and classifications of integers.
- Encourage a class discussion to solidify understanding.
Lesson Development (30 minutes)
- Step 1: Definition of Integers (10 minutes)
- Teacher provides a clear definition of integers, explaining that integers include positive whole
numbers, negative whole numbers, and zero.
- Facilitate a discussion about where integers are used in real life (e.g., temperatures, banking,
elevation).

- Step 2: Identifying Positive and Negative Integers (10 minutes)

- Organize students into small groups.
- Provide each group with index cards labeled with a mix of numbers (both positive and
negative).
- Instruct groups to separate the cards into two categories: positive natural numbers and negative
natural numbers.
- Groups share their findings and the teacher clarifies any misconceptions.

- Step 3: Understanding the Concept Through Examples (5 minutes)

- Introduce the climbing stairs analogy: Going up represents positive integers, while going down
represents negative integers.
- Explain that zero is a neutral integer.
- Students can visualize different scenarios and draw a simple number line to locate integers.

- Step 4: Classifying Integers (5 minutes)

- Use a digital device to show a virtual number line.
- Ask students to locate various integers on the number line, classifying them as positive or
negative.
- Engage the class in a quick interactive poll using a digital tool (e.g., Kahoot) to classify integer
examples.

Conclusion (5 minutes)
- Summarize key points: definitions of integers, classifications of positive and negative integers,
and the importance of integers in real life.
- Conduct a brief Q&A session where students can ask for clarification on any aspects of the
lesson.
- Preview upcoming topics related to operations with integers (addition, subtraction) and
questions for students to consider for the next class: "How do we perform calculations with
positive and negative integers?"

Extended Activities:
- Integer Scavenger Hunt:
Create a scavenger hunt where students must find real-world examples of positive and negative
integers (e.g., recording temperatures, bank statements, etc.) and present their findings in the
next class.

- Math Journal:
Encourage students to maintain a math journal where they can reflect on what they learned about
integers and write about real-life situations in which they encounter integers.

- Integer Board Game:

Design a simple board game where players move along a number line and use positive and
negative integers to navigate challenges and earn points.

WEEK 1: LESSON 2

SCHOOL LEVEL LEARNING AREA DATE TIME ROLL

GRADE 8 MATHEMATICS

Strand: Numbers
Sub Strand: Integers; Representing integers on a number line

Specific Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the lesson, the learners will be able to:
1. Define a number line.
2. Draw and represent integers on a number line.
3. Enjoy generating integer number lines in their classroom.

Key Inquiry Questions:

- Where do we use a number line?
Core competencies Values PCIs

• Creativity and • Respect Environmental education

imagination • Unity

Learning Resources:
- EAEP: Smart Minds; Mathematics Learner’s Book Grade 8, pg. 3-5
- Number line chart
- Ruler
- Digital devices (if available)

Organisation of Learning:

Introduction (5 minutes):
1. Review: Begin with a quick recap of the previous lesson focusing on integers and their
significance.
2. Discussion: Guide students to read and discuss relevant content from the resource concerning
number lines to create a connection with their understanding. Encourage students to integrate
examples of where they might have encountered number lines in real life (e.g., thermometers,
timelines, etc.).

Lesson Development (30 minutes):

Step 1: Defining a Number Line (5 minutes)

- Ask the learners what they think a number line is. Write responses on the board.
- Provide a clear definition of a number line: "A number line is a straight line where numbers are
placed at equal intervals. It helps us understand the size and position of numbers in relation to
each other."

Step 2: Drawing a Number Line (10 minutes)

- Instruct students to take a ruler and draw a horizontal line across their paper.
- Ask them to label the center as “0” and mark equal intervals to the left and right to represent
integers (e.g., -1, -2, -3 to the left; 1, 2, 3 to the right).
- Walk around and provide support as needed.

Step 3: Representing Integers (10 minutes)

- Distribute integer values (positive and negative) to each group.
- Groups will take turns drawing additional marks on their number lines to represent the integers
they received.
- Encourage them to discuss among themselves why the placement of each integer makes sense.

Step 4: Creating a Collaborative Number Line (5 minutes)

- As a class, create a large number line on the board or use a roll of butcher paper. Each group
contributes by placing their integers on the big number line.
- Discuss with the whole class how the integers are spaced and why this uniformity is important.

Conclusion (5 minutes):
1. Summarize: Highlight key points, such as the purpose of a number line and how integers are
represented on it.
2. Interactive Activity: Conduct a quick game where students must identify where a given integer
falls on the big number line. This can be done by pointing to the correct spot.
3. Preview: Briefly introduce the next lesson that will build on this concept (e.g., adding and
subtracting integers) and pose questions for students to consider at home.

Extended Activities:
1. Integer Scavenger Hunt: Ask students to find different items in the classroom and assign each
item a positive or negative integer value (e.g., a pencil might be +2, while a book might be -3
based on weight).
