Activity
A quality physical education and health program supports the physical, intellectual, and
social-emotional development of learners. When they maintain adequate levels of physical fitness
and make healthy choices, the conditions and opportunities for learning also increase. For these
reasons, Physical Education and Health plays an integral role in a comprehensive educational
program. To facilitate these optimal levels of wellness for elementary physical education and health,
the Department of Education is committed to delivering a comprehensive, sequential curriculum K-
12. This curriculum will engage and help inspire learners to pursue a lifetime of fitness-related
activities and healthy decisions.
Physical education is a formal content area of study in schools that is standards based and
encompasses assessment based on standards and benchmarks. It is defined as a planned
sequential K-12 standards-based program curricula and instruction designed to develop motor skills,
knowledge, and behaviors of healthy active living, physical fitness, sportsmanship, self-efficacy, and
emotional intelligence. As a school subject, physical education is focused on teaching school-aged
children the science and methods of physically active, healthful living (NASPE, 2012). It is an
avenue for engaging in developmentally appropriate physical activities designed for children to
develop their fitness, gross motor skills, and health (Robinson, 2011).

In institutionalized education, the main goal has been developing children’s cognitive
capacity in the sense of learning knowledge in academic disciplines. This goal dictates a learning
environment in which seated learning behavior is considered appropriate and effective and is
rewarded. Physical education and health as part of education provides the only opportunity for all
children to learn about physical movement and engage in different physical activities. As noted, its
goal and place in institutionalized education have changed from the original focus on teaching
hygiene and health to educating children about the many forms and benefits of physical movement,
including sports and exercise (NASPE, 2004).
Physical activity during a school day may also be associated with academic benefits and
children’s social and emotional well-being. Physical education and health, along with other
opportunities for physical activity in the school environment, is important for optimal health and
development in school-age children. It may also serve as a preventive measure for adult conditions
such as heart disease, high blood pressure, and type 2 diabetes.
Little has been learned about the short-and long-term effectiveness of physical education in
addressing public health issues (Pete et al., 2011). Because the learning objectives of physical
education have not included improvement in health status as a direct measure, indirect measures
and correlates have been used as surrogates. However, some promising research, such as that
conducted by Morgan and colleagues (2007), has demonstrated that students are more physically
active on days when they participate in physical education classes. Further, there is no evidence of
a compensatory effect such that children having been active during physical education elect not to
participate in additional physical activity on that day. Accordingly, quality physical education
contributes to a child’s daily accumulation of physical activity and is of particular importance for
children who are overweight or who lack access to these opportunities in the home environment
(NASPE, 2012).
Physical education and health represents the only time and place for every child to learn
knowledge and skills related to physical activity and to be physically active during the school day. It
also is currently the only time and place for all children to engage in vigorous- or moderate-intensity
physical activity safely because of the structured and specialist-supervised instructional
environment.
Physical education is an integral part of the total education of every child in Kindergarten through
Grade 12.
Quality physical education programs are needed to increase the physical competence, health-
related fitness, self-responsibility and enjoyment of physical activity for all students so that they can
be physically active for a lifetime. Physical education programs can only provide these benefits if
they are well planned and well-implemented.
Improved Physical Fitness. Improves children’s muscular strength, flexibility, muscular endurance,
body composition and cardiovascular endurance.
Skill Development. Develops motor skills, which allow for safe, successful and satisfying
participation in physical activities.
Support of Other Subject Areas. Reinforces knowledge learned across the curriculum. Serves as
a lab for application of content in science, math and social studies.

Self Discipline. Facilitates development of student responsibility for health and fitness.
Improved Judgment. Quality physical education can influence moral development. Students have
the opportunity to assume leadership, cooperate with others; question actions and regulations and
accept responsibility for their own behavior.
Stress Reduction. Physical activity becomes an outlet for releasing tension and anxiety, and
facilitates emotional stability and resilience.
Strengthened Peer Relationships. Physical education can be a major force in helping children
socialize with others successfully and provides opportunities to learn positive people skills.
Especially during late childhood and adolescence, being able to participate in dances, games and
sports is an important part of peer culture.
Improved Self-confidence and Self-esteem. Physical education instills a stronger sense of self-
worth in children based on their mastery of skills and concepts in physical activity. They can become
more confident, assertive, independent and self-controlled.
Experience Setting Goals. Physical education provides children the opportunity to set and strive
for personal, achievable goals.

Physical education and health is a formal content area of study in schools, it is standards
based, and it encompasses assessment according to standards and benchmarks. Select curriculum-
based physical education programs have been described to show the potential of high-quality
physical education and health in developing children into active adults. Such models provide the

only opportunity for all school-age children to access health-enhancing physical activities.
Curriculum for physical education and health includes movement education, which emphasizes the
importance of fundamental body movements competence as a prerequisite for engagement in
physical activity throughout the life span; sport education, which emphasizes helping students
become skillful players in lifetime sports of their choosing; and fitness education, which imparts
physical fitness concepts to students, including the benefits and scientific principles of exercise, with
the goal of developing and maintaining individual fitness and positive lifestyle change.
A quality physical education program that meets national guidelines is the cornerstone for a
physically active school and helps support improved classroom behavior, physical fitness, and
standardized test scores. Physical education programs provide standards-based daily learning
opportunities, age- and developmentally- appropriate instruction, meaningful content and ongoing
assessment. The skills, knowledge, and behaviors learned in P.E. help kids to establish and
maintain active lifestyles well into adulthood.
Physical education is one of the lessons that cuts through various school-ages, especially on
the conversation of health culture. Health-enhancing physical activities bring students to appreciate
the necessary act of caring for one’s body. And this is particularly crucial during elementary school
physical education.
Elementary students are more physically active in schools on days when they have physical
education and health classes. This is the age when students have stocked up voluminous energy
that they may become restless without any physical activity. Studies have shown that physical
education can be performed on a daily basis in schools, as long as high-quality physical education
programs back it.
Harnessing the culture of health consciousness aids elementary students in their high school
life, where substantial amounts of stress are expected to arise in the form of homework, family
issues, identity crisis and peer pressure. Being already involved in an athletic activity helps students
relieve stress, and also develop that skill to bond with other kids. Their recreational activity with their
peers can drive them to become physically fit.
Finally, physical education makes elementary students appreciate a diet that can make them
less prone to body shaming and eating disorders. They will understand what to eat and what
exercises to do to keep their bodies healthy, regardless of size and shape. Physical health and
education can ultimately help students cultivate an appreciation for sound eating practices and vital
nutritional guidelines.
