Operations Management: A Critical Function
Operations Management is a multi-disciplinary field involving planning, organising, and
supervising, in the contexts of production, manufacturing, or the provision of services.
With delivery as the goal, it transforms organisational inputs into customer-facing
outputs, successfully and efficiently. The inputs range from materials, equipment, and
technology, to people, processes, and protocols.

Operations is one of the major functions in an organisation along with supply chains,
marketing, finance, and human resources. The operations function requires
management of both the strategic and day-to-day production of goods and services.

Operations management Components

• Manufacturing Network • Lean Management
• Plant & Workplace Optimisation • Frontline & Sales
• Support Functions • Business Support Function

The Operations Manager: Functions & Skillsets
The operations manager transcends industries, so functional roles are industry- or
sector-specific. At the fundamental level, the two broad domains an operations
manager operates in can be reduced to manufacturing/production of material goods
and the provision of services.

Operations managers are responsible for managing all company operations and
processes, including process design, improvement, and optimisation; quality
management; process; and strategic decision-making. Additionally, they are required to
have a specific skillset that includes organisation, communication, and strategic
thinking abilities.
