Lab #2 Report

The Lab #2 Report focuses on pH and buffers, outlining learning objectives such as understanding pH meters, interpreting pH data, and constructing data tables and graphs. It includes sections for conducting experiments with acid added to water and buffer, as well as defining key terms related to pH. Additionally, the report requires students to analyze data from their experiments and compare the pH of common substances.

Lab #2 Report.

pH & Buffers
Learning Objectives
For the lab practical, you should have a thorough understanding of this experiment
including:
1. The definitions listed in section E of this report
2. Identifying a pH meter and reading the display
3. Interpreting data if given a graph of pH change versus amount of acid added
including identifying which solution had a buffer present if given two graphs
similar to the two in this experiment
4. Identifying a solution as acid, base, or neutral if given the pH
5. State difference between independent variable and dependent variable
6. Be able to construct a scientific data table and line graph

A. In the space below, construct a data table for Experiment #1, Acid added to Water
Use a ruler to create the rows and columns. Neatness counts. Follow the directions for
creating tables as described in the lab exercise

1
B. Use the grid on page 6 to construct a graph of your data for Experiment #1. Neatness
counts. Follow the directions for creating graphs as described in the lab exercise.

C. In the space below, construct a data table for Experiment #2. Acid added to Buffer.
Use a ruler to create the rows and columns. Neatness counts. Follow the directions for
creating tables as described in the lab exercise

2
D. Use the grid on page 7 to construct a graph of your data for Experiment #2.
Neatness counts. Follow the directions for creating graphs as described in the lab
exercise.

E. Define the following terms. Avoid Googling for an answer. Rather, apply the lecture
material from Unit 2 Part A.

1. pH scale:

2. pH

3. buffer:

4. acid:

5. base:

6. salt:

3
F. Answer the following questions:
1. Examine the data in your data table for experiment #1 and for experiment #2.
Describe the differences you see in the data. In your explanation, make specific
reference to your data by including actual data.

2. Did you expect the results of experiment 1 and 2 to be different? Explain why or why
not.

4
G. pH of Common Substances. Complete the table below

Substance pH

Soda (cola)

Coffee

Glass cleaner

Baking soda

Milk

Vinegar

Tea

Are any of the results above unexpected? If so, explain.
