Tutorial-4

The document contains a tutorial with three questions related to chemical reaction kinetics, including gas phase decomposition and liquid phase reactions in batch and CSTR reactors. Each question requires determining reaction order, specific reaction rates, and activation energy, along with considerations for experimental design and potential errors. The tutorial emphasizes the importance of data analysis and experimental conditions in understanding reaction kinetics.

Tutorial 4 CLL122

Question 1:

The gas phase decomposition

A -> B+2C
is carried out in a constant volume batch reactor. Runs 1 through 5 were carried out at 100
degrees Celsius, while run 6 was carried out at 110 degrees Celsius.
a) From the data in the table below, determine the reaction order and a specific reaction rate.
b) What is the activation energy of this reaction?

Run Initial Concentration, CAO Half Life, t1/2 (Min)

(g mol/L)
1 0.025 4.1
2 0.0133 7.7
3 0.01 9.8
4 0.05 1.96
5 0.075 1.3
6 0.025 2.0

Question 2:

Liquid phase irreversible reaction

A -> B+C

is carried out in CSTR. To learn the rate law the volumetric flow rate, v0, (hence =V/v0) is varied and the
effluent concentrations of species A recorded as a function of a space-time . Pure A enters the reactor
at the concentration of 2 mole per dm3. Steady state conditions exist when measurements are recorded.

Run 1 2 3 4 5
(min) 15 38 100 300 1200
CA 1.5 1.25 1 .75 .5
(mol/dm3)

a) Determine the reaction order and specific reaction rate constant.

b) If you were to repeat this experiment to determine the kinetics, what would you do differently?
Would you run at higher, lower, or the same temperature? If you were to take more data,
where did you place the measurement (e.g. )?
c) It is believed that the technician may have made a dilution factor-of-10 error in one of the
concentration measurements. What do you think?
Question 3:

Liquid phase reaction of methanol and triphenyl takes place in a batch reactor at 25 degrees centigrade

CH3OH+(C6H5)3CCL-> (C6H5)3COCH3+HCL

A B C D

For an equal molar feed of the following concentration-time data was obtained for methanol

CA mol/dm3 1 0.95 0.816 0.707 0.5 0.37

T(h) 0 0.278 1.389 2.78 8.33 16.66

The following concentration-time data was obtained for initial methanol concentration 0.01 mol/dm3
and an initial triphenyl of 1.0 mol/dm3.

CA mol/dm3 0.1 0.0847 0.0735 0.0526 0.0357

T(h) 0 1 2 5 10

a) Determine the rate law and rate law parameters.

b) If you were to take more data points, what would be the reasonable settings (e.g. CA0 and CB0)?
and why?
