CLASS : XI

SUBJECT : MATHEMATICS
MAX MARKS : 40
TIME : 90 Mins

Section – A (Each question carries 2 marks)

1. If R is the set of real numbers and Q is the set of rational numbers, then what is
R – Q?
2. Taking the set of natural numbers as the universal set, write down the complements
of the following sets:
{ x : x ∈ N and 2x + 1 > 10 } (ii) { x : x is a perfect cube}
3. Show that for any sets A and B,
𝐴 = ( 𝐴 ∩ 𝐵 ) ∪ ( 𝐴 – 𝐵 ) 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐴 ∪ ( 𝐵 – 𝐴 ) = ( 𝐴 ∪ 𝐵 )
4. Let A = {9,10,11,12,13} and let f : A→N be defined by f (n) = the highest prime
factor of n. Find the range of f.
1 − 𝑥, 𝑥 < 0
5. The function f is defined by 𝑓(𝑥) = 1, 𝑥 = 0. Draw the graph of f(x).
𝑥 + 1, 𝑥 > 0
6. How many chords can be drawn through 21 points on a circle?
7. How many words, with or without meaning, each of 3 vowels and 2 consonants can
be formed from the letters of the word INVOLUTE?
8. Find the number of words with or without meaning which can be made using all the
letters of the word AGAIN. If these words are written as in a dictionary, what will
be the 50th word?
9. An experiment involves rolling a pair of dice and recording the numbers that come
up. Describe the following events:
A: the sum is greater than 8,
B: 2 occurs on either die
C: the sum is at least 7 and a multiple of 3.
Which pairs of these events are mutually exclusive?
10. Name the octants in which the following points lie: (1, 2, 3), (4, –2, 3), (4, –2, –5),
(4, 2, –5), (– 4, 2, –5), (– 4, 2, 5), (–3, –1, 6) (2, – 4, –7).
Section – B (Each question carries 4 marks)
11. The cable of a uniformly loaded suspension bridge hangs in the form of a parabola.
The roadway which is horizontal and 100 m long is supported by vertical wires
attached to the cable, the longest wire being 30 m and the shortest being 6 m. Find
the length of a supporting wire attached to the roadway 18 m from the middle.
12. A man running a racecourse notes that the sum of the distances from the two flag
posts from him is always 10 m and the distance between the flag posts is 8 m. Find
the equation of the posts traced by the man.
13. A and B are two events such that P(A) = 0.54, P(B) = 0.69 and P(A ∩ B) = 0.35.
Find (i) P(A ∪ B) (ii) P(A´ ∩ B´) (iii) P(A ∩ B´) (iv) P(B ∩ A´)
14. Solve the following graphically. x + 2y ≤ 10, x + y ≥ 1, x – y ≤ 0, x ≥ 0, y ≥ 0
15. How many litres of water will have to be added to 1125 litres of the 45% solution,
of acid so that the resulting mixture will contain more than 25% but less than 30%
acid content?
