FINAL YEAR RESEARCH AND DESIGN TRADE PROJECT
KENYA NATIONAL EXAMINATIONS COUNCIL
DIPLOMA IN BUILDING CONSTRUCTION & CIVIL ENGINEERING

TRADE PROJECT GUIDE LINE:

INSTRUCTION TO CANDIDATES
The council will not accept
-stereotyping projects
-Incomplete projects
1.The complete project report should be submitted several weeks to start of written examinations.
2.The project report should be submitted in Two(2) volumes .
3.The project report must be typed double spaced.
4.Drawings, reference and any other relevant information shall be annexed and neatly bound together
to make one complete document.
NB. The following items should be in soft copy: -
i) The project TITLE
ii) The project ABSTRACT
iii) The ARCHITECTURAL drawings.
These items mentioned above will be uploaded to the KNEC portal before the start of the written exam
in order to confirm that the trainee is ready for exam.
Then their hardcopies should make the final document.

EXAMLPE OF PROJECT PROCEDURE

CLIENT’S BRIEF
This is the client’s requirement of the project.ie what the project should look like and the conditions it
should meet. Choose a project of your choice and design it as you have been taught, to the taste of the
client.

CONSTRUCTION
The building will be a DOUBLE STOREY(2) reinforced concrete framed structure with masonry infill
walls.
It will have gutters all around , rain water pipes, a pitched (G.I.S) covered steel roof ,& a suitable ceiling
.
-:Any other construction that deemed necessary is allowed.
ITEMS THAT ARE TO BE CONSIDERED

1.SURVEYING
Prepare the following including all the necessary features.
(a)Site location plan
(b)Block plan with suitable contours using suitable methods.
(c) Raw survey data to be included in the project.

2.SOIL INVESTIVATION
a)Soil classification.
b)Atterberg limits.
c)Proctor compaction tests.

3.ARCHITECTURAL REQUIREMENTS
The architectural sections should have the following details.
(a) Prepared floor plan.
(b) Elevations.
(c ) Sections through the structure, staircase detail & at critical points.
(d)Typical construction details./Electrical layout.
(e)Prepare schedules for doors, windows and finishes.

4.STRUCTURAL REQUIREMENTS
Design and detail the following:
a)Typical columns and their bases.
b)Upper floors and typical beams.
c)Stairs& Ramps
d)Prepare bar bending schedule for all works.

5.MEASUREMENTS, ESTIMATING AND COSTING


a)Take all the quantities for the sub-structure works up to and including the DPC.
b)Abstract and prepare a bill of quantities of items (a) above using the traditional method.
c)Built up unit rates and price all the items for the substructure works.

6.SITE ORGANIZATION AND MANAGEMENT.
Prepare the following:
a)Site layout plan for the works
b)Detailed works programmed for the sub-structure works.
c)A critical path analysis and network for the works.
d)Prepare plant and staff requirement schedule.
e)Method statement for the sub-structure works.
