COMPUTER WORKSHOP

RATIONALE
This course aims to familiarize students with various parts of computers, how to assemble them, and
different types of peripherals. Additionally, it equips students with the necessary knowledge and
skills in computer software installation and maintenance, enabling them to diagnose software faults
effectively.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
- Identify various computer components.
- Write the specifications of a computer.
- Describe and differentiate various types of motherboards, processors, RAM, and secondary storage devic
- Install various computer components.
- Assemble and disassemble a computer system.
- Install operating systems such as Windows and Linux.
- Diagnose faults in a computer system (e.g., SMPS, HDD, RAM issues).
- Identify various cables used for connections.
- Outline space requirements for setting up a computer center.
- Install and configure different application software.
- Identify various types of viruses and clean the system using antivirus software.
- Set up network connections and troubleshoot common network issues.
- Perform BIOS and firmware updates to maintain system performance.

DETAILED CONTENTS
Part-A (Hardware)
1.1 Familiarization and Specifications of Computer Components
- Motherboard, Hard Disk Drive (HDD) / Solid State Drive (SSD), Floppy Disk Drive,
CD/DVD/Blu-ray Drives, Keyboard, Mouse, Display Devices, Memory Chips (RAM, ROM), Serial &
Parallel Ports, USB Ports, SATA & FireWire, Bluetooth, Printers, Network Interface Card (NIC),
Cooling Systems.

1.2 Introduction and Working Principle of UPS


- Battery backup, Surge protection, Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR), Types of UPS Systems:
Standby UPS, Line-Interactive UPS, Online UPS.

1.3 Assembling and Disassembling of PCs


- Installing components (motherboard, RAM, CPU, GPU, etc.), Connecting power supply,
Troubleshooting power issues, Cable management, BIOS configuration.
1.4 Setting Up Basic Infrastructure for Computers
- Power Layout, Air Conditioning, Earthing, Network Setup, Security Measures.

1.5 Operating System Installation and Software Configuration


- Installing Windows and Linux, Partitioning drives, Dual-boot setup, Driver installation, System
settings configuration.

1.6 Computer Security and Virus Protection


- Types of Malware (Viruses, Trojans, Ransomware, Spyware), Antivirus software, Firewalls,
Cybersecurity best practices.
