Food Code Numbers and the Food Coding Scheme

An 8-digit number – food code – uniquely identifies each food/beverage in the Food and Nutrient Database for Dietary Studies.
Food code numbers are assigned according to a classification scheme that associates the first digit with one of nine major food
commodity groups and the second digit with a more specific subgroup as listed below.
