Super Noob’s Notes to: Building a Gaming

P C!

Components:
CPU (Central Processing Unit):
- The CPU or Processor is “The Brains” of your computer! Dictating how slow or fast your
computer runs. The second most important component, behind your GPU (more on that
next). You’ll want this to be as good as possible, splurge on this!
- There are two types of CPU: Intel and AMD. Intel is very specific and only works with
other Intel components, unlike AMD which is much more flexible. Stick with AMD!
- CPU’s come in many sizes, make sure your motherboard accepts the right size CPU.
- Steve Recommends: CPU fitting AM4 Socket - AMD

GPU (Graphics Processing Unit):

- The GPU or Graphics Card is THE MOST IMPORTANT PIECE for a Gaming PC! This
deals with image display and information management, making sure your game is
running smoothly and without lags. The better the GPU, the better the performance. The
GPU and CPU are two of the most important pieces to your PC, so make sure these are
of higher quality.
- GPU’s can come with multiple fans and also different versions.
- Steve Recommends: GPU - Single fan, 2060 TI
Motherboard:
- The Motherboard is homebase, it’s where everything gets connected together in order to
function properly. She brings the dysfunctional family of random parts together into a
cohesive unit!
- The Motherboard also holds the ports that will be outside your machine.
- Comes in several sizes! It is VERY IMPORTANT to know what size motherboard you
are using before choosing other components! Having the wrong size of any component
can ruin your build! The smaller the board, usually the smaller the device. (Refer to size
chart below)
- Steve Recommends: Motherboard, Depends but must have an AM4 Socket for CPU

RAM (Random Access Memory):

- RAM is your computer’s temporary data cache. While gaming, you’ll have lots of data
being transferred and temporarily saved so that your game will run a lot smoother and
load faster.
- RAM’s come in many storage sizes, primarily 8GB. Motherboards will usually have 4
slots for RAM, however, having 4 sticks of RAM is quite overkill. Stick with 2 8GB sticks
of RAM and you’ll be fine!
- Steve Recommends: 2x 8GB RAM Low Profile (To fit case size)
SSD (Solid State Drive):
- The SSD is your storage. This is the thing you will be complaining about when you don’t
have enough storage to download a game! Unlike RAM, this holds all data that the
computer has….. All of it!
- SSD comes in MANY MANY sizes! Usually, the bigger, the better! Depends on how
much you intend to download items to your PC.
- Steve Recommends: 500GB SSD Sandy Recommends: 1TB SSD Me?: Confused...

CPU Cooler:
- So that CPU is cranking out a lot of power and heat, however, we don’t want it to
overheat! That’s where the CPU Cooler comes in! The cooler rests on top of the CPU
and prevents it from overheating!
- There are two types of Coolers: Air and Water Cooling. Both work fine but there is a risk
to running Water Cooling. If it leaks, it can ruin your entire PC! Stick with Air Coolers!
- Steve Recommends: Air Fan Cooler

Power Supply:
- So you’ve got all the components to make the PC work, but you have to power it up
somehow! That’s where the Power Supply comes in.
- Power Supplies come in many different wattages so you will need to check which
wattage works best with your system. There are 2 sizes of Power Supplies: SFX and
ATX. SFX is usually for smaller devices (and is frankly more expensive), while ATX is
what you will be using for builds 99% of the time.
- Always look for 80 Plus Bronze Quality on Power Supply! Any lower will not get you the
best quality.
- Steve Recommends: 500 Watt, 80 Plus Bronze
Case:
- We need something to hold all these components together, so it’s time for the case!
- Cases are important, not only for looks but for AIR FLOW! If you want your PC to last
long, you will want to make sure that air can flow nicely through it.
- When picking a case, make sure you are picking the right size for your components! You
want everything to fit! There are Full, Mid, and Mini Towers for both Standard-ATX and
Micro-ATX Motherboards.

Steve Recommends - Full List:

- CPU - Fitting AM4 Socket - AMD
- GPU - Single fan, 2060 TI
- Motherboard - Depends, but must have an AM4 Socket for CPU
- RAM - 2x 8GB RAM Low Profile (To fit case size)
- SSD - 500GB SSD (Or 1 TB?)
- CPU Cooler - Air Fan Cooler
- Power Supply - 500 Watt, 80 Plus Bronze
- Case - Something that fits everything

CURRENT BUILD THOUGHTS!!!!:

Budget: $600 - $800

I’m thinking about making a Micro-ATX PC, I’m not a hard-core pc gamer and I’m not planning
on running anything at max so I think it’s a good starting point. It’s also a little more affordable.

Case: Masterbox Q300L Micro ATX Tower (Found at $50 w/o shipping)

I really like the design on this case, especially the magnetic covers. Read good things about it
but need to do more digging, but so far this is the top pick
