SIP Report 04

The document outlines a lab experiment focused on RC high and low pass filters, detailing the objectives, theory, and procedures for simulating and verifying filter characteristics using LabView and an NI ELVIS board. It explains the concept of cut-off frequency and provides step-by-step instructions for setting up simulations and experiments to measure frequency response. The results confirm that the filters were successfully verified through both simulation and practical implementation.

RC HIGH/LOW PASS
FILTERS

Rohit Kumar
EC23B1065
Objective:
Deduce the transfer function and hence draw the bode plot for
the given series of RC circuits using Lab View simulation and
verify the same using an NI bode analyzer.

Theory:
Low Pass Filter:
The Low Pass Filter – the low pass filter only allows low-frequency
signals from 0Hz to its cut-off frequency, ƒc point to pass while
blocking those any higher.

This “Cut-off”, “Corner” or “Breakpoint” frequency is defined as

being the frequency point where the capacitive reactance and
resistance are equal, R = Xc. When this occurs the output signal is
attenuated to 70.7% of the input signal value or -3dB (20 log
(Vout/Vin)) of the input. Although R = Xc, the output is not half of
the input signal. This is because it is equal to the vector sum of the
two and is therefore 0.707 of the input.
High Pass Filter:
The High Pass Filter – the high pass filter only allows high frequency
signals from its cut-off frequency, ƒc point and higher to infinity to
pass through while blocking those any lower.

Procedure & Diagrams:

LabView Software:
1. Now to simulate this in Lab VIEW open a blank VI.
2. Choose and drop the following into the block diagram window.
3. Right-click on the block diagram window and choose control design
& simulation –control design – model construction – CD
construct transfer function model.vi.
4. Right-click on the block diagram window and choose control design
& simulation –control design – model construction – CD draw
transfer function equation.vi.
5. Right-click on the block diagram window and choose control design
& simulation –control design – model conversion – CD convert to
state space model.vi.
6. Right click on block diagram window and choose control design
& simulation –control design – frequency response – CD Bode.vi.
7. Now connect them together using wire like the flow given below:
CD construct transfer function model.vi - CD draw transfer function
equation.vi-CD construct transfer function model.vi - CD convert to
state space model.vi - CDBode.vi
8. To CD construct transfer function model.vi input terminals
(individually at numerator and denominator) right click and choose
create – control. Feed into this the desired transfer function and
check the equation displayed.
9. To CD draw transfer function equation.vi output terminal right click
and choose create – indicator.
10. To CD Bode.vi, at two output terminal individually right click and
choose create – indicator. Here in bode plots the frequency values
are in rad/s. Convert it to Hz.
11. Measure the corner frequency in each case. (frequency
corresponding to -3dB)

Low Pass Filter
NI ELVIS BOARD III:
1. Make the connections in the protoboard as shown.

2. Connect AI0+ and AI0- to a CRO in the ELVIS II board. AI1+ and
AI1- are connected to function generator and ground terminals of
the board.
3. Open function generator from Elvis II instruments. Set sinusoidal
signal of say 2Vp-p and 100Hz. Observe the output along with the
input. Measure the magnitude and phase shift. Now increase the
frequency to 500Hz and 1000Hz. Do the measurements and
tabulate the results.
4. Open Bode analyzer, set the measurement settings and run, so
that a bode plot is displayed. Here in this bode analyzer the
frequency values are in Hz.
5. Draw the plot in a semi-log sheet.
6. Now connect the high pass filter configuration and repeat the
experiment.
7. Find the corner frequency in each case. (frequency corresponding
to -3dB)

Corner frequency as per simulation = 2*pi*Corner

frequency obtained through experiment.

Result:
The filters have been verified in both LabView software and NI Elvis
III Board, and the respective output waveforms have been obtained.
