Math Notes

Fractal geometry involves shapes with self-similarity and is created through a recursive process. The document outlines the steps to create a Koch Snowflake, starting with an equilateral triangle and progressively adding smaller triangles to its sides. It also includes exercises to calculate the perimeter and area at each step of the Koch Snowflake construction.

10: Perimeter and Area in Fractal Geometry

Fractal geometry utilizes shapes that have self-similarity (parts of that shape appear within itself at
different scales/sizes) and are created using the recursive process (a procedure that is applied over and
over again).

How to create a Koch Snowflake:

1. Draw an equilateral triangle.
2. In the middle of each side of the triangle, attach a smaller equilateral triangle (pointing
outwards). The smaller equilateral triangle’s sides should be one-third as long as the original
equilateral triangle’s sides.
3. In the middle of each side, attach an equilateral triangle (pointing outwards) one-third as long
as the sides it is attached to. Repeat.
Ex. Find the perimeter P1 of the equilateral triangle formed in step 1 of the process of creating a Koch
snowflake, if each side is of length 1 foot.

Ex. Find the perimeter P2 of the shape that is formed in step 2 of the process of creating a Koch
snowflake.

Ex. Find the perimeter P3 of the shape that is formed in step 3 of the process of creating a Koch
snowflake.

Ex. Find the perimeter P of the Koch snowflake.

Ex. Find the area 𝐴1 of the equilateral triangle formed in step 1 of the process of creating a Koch
snowflake, if each side is of length 1 foot.

Ex. Find the area 𝐴2 of the shape formed in step 2 of the process of creating a Koch snowflake.

Ex. Find the area 𝐴3 of the shape formed in step 3 of the process of creating a Koch snowflake.
