Exchange data with other components using
telephone line
Convert the digital signal generated by a computer
into analog signal that the telephone line can
transmit
Analog signals are transmitted over a telephone
line and receiving modem converts them to digital
signal
Sends the data from modem to other devices
Hub

It has multiple ports and connect several

devices to it.
Used to send information
Hubs were very popular as they were less

A switch also connects computers to
each other like hub.
A switch sends data to only the
destination device or port in the
network
Determines how and where the data is
to be broadcast
It makes a network more efficient
Switches are usually preferred to hubs
Router
A router is a device that connects two or more packet-switched networks
or subnetworks.
It serves two primary functions: managing traffic between these networks
by forwarding data packets to their intended IP addresses, and allowing
multiple devices to use the same Internet connection.
Some examples of routers used in large network are
brouter , core router , Edge router and Virtual router.
Difference between Hub, Switch
& Router
Difference between MAC Address and
IP Address
The physical address -- which is also called a media access control, or
MAC, address -- identifies a device to other devices on the same local
network.

The internet address -- or IP address -- identifies the device

globally. A network packet needs both addresses to get to its
destination.
Repeater

Allows the signal to travel longer

distances over a network. When
a signal travels after a long
distance, it may get distorted or
degraded. A repeater generates
the signals and then retransmits
the signal.
