Tutorial 4 Forced Convection
Tutorial 4 Forced Convection
1. Air at velocity of 3m/s and at 20°C flows over a flat plate along the length. The length,
width and thickness of the plate are 100cm, 50cm, 2cm respectively. The top surface of the
plate is maintained at 100°C. Calculate the heat lost by the plate and temperature at bottom
surface of the plate for steady state conditions. Thermal conductivity of plate material is 23
W/mK
2. Air at 20°C at atmospheric pressure flows over a flat plate at a velocity of 3 m/s. If the
plate is 1 m wide and at 70°C, calculate the following at x = 300 mm.
i. Hydrodynamic boundary layer thickness \
ii. Thermal boundary layer thickness
iii. Local friction coefficient
iv. Average heat transfer coefficient
v. Heat transfer rate
3. Atmospheric air at 25°C and velocity of 0.5m/s flows over a 50W incandescent bulb
whose surface temperature is maintained at 140°C. The bulb may be approximated as a
sphere of 50 mm diameter. What is the rate of heat loss by convection to air?
4. Water at 10oC is heated to 40oC in a tube of 2cm diameter. The outside of the tube is
wrapped with an electric heating element that provides a uniform flux of 20kW/m2 over the
surface and a mass flow rate of 0.02kg/s. Find
i Reynolds number
ii Heat transfer coefficient
iii Length of the pipe
5. Water enters a 2.5cm diameter copper tube of a heat exchanger at 15 oC at a rate of 0.3 kg/s.
It is heated by steam condensing on the surface at 120 oC. If the average heat transfer
coefficient is 800W/m2K, determine the length of the tube required to heat the water to 115
o
C.
6. When 0.5kg of water per minute is passed through a tube of diameter 20mm, it is found to
be heated from 20oC to 50oC. If the tube surface is at 85oC, determine
i length of the tube required
ii Is it hydro dynamically fully developed
iii Pressure loss over the length
iv Pump work required to overcome friction in the pipe
7. Water is to be heated from 15oC to 65oC as it flows through a 5m long insulated tube with
internal diameter 3cm. An electric heating resistance provides uniform heating throughout
the surface. If the system is to provide hot water at 10L/min, find
i Power rating of the heater
ii Inner surface temperature at the exit
8. A 200m long pipe line of diameter 30cm carrying oil at 20 oC flows at a velocity of 2m/s.
The pipe is immersed in icy water at 0 oC. Neglecting the thermal resistance of the pipe
material calculate
i Temperature of the oil at the exit
ii Heat transfer rate from the oil
Take the properties as ρ=881.1kg/m3, υ=9.429St, k=0.145W/mK ,c=1880J/kgK
