LESSON PLAN FOR TEACHING READING SKILLS

LESSON PLAN

Duration: 20 minutes
Materials: Reading text, pictures, flash cards and invitation card sample
Objectives:
to improve skimming and scanning skills to reinforce learners’ comprehension skills,
to encourage learners to work in groups and pairs,
to enable learners to practice writing skills use by promoting their creativity.

Pre-reading stage
Objectives:
to get the learners ready for the lesson,
to motivate them to engage in the text,
to activate their previous background knowledge.
Procedure: The teacher comes to the class and greets the students. Then, the teacher says what they
are going to do in the lesson and she/he shows some pictures about the topic of the reading text and
asks “What do you see in the pictures, what are these people are doing?”. Then, she/he elicits the
answers from the students. After that, the teacher makes a speed chatting activity, asks class to
make two rows facing each other and prepares one simple question and encourages them to ask this
question to each other in 60 seconds and change their partners to ask again, it can be repeated
several times. Then the teacher finishes the activity and gets the students ready for the while-
reading activities.
Steps
1- The teacher comes to the class and says “Good morning/hello everyone, how are you today?
2- The teacher says “Today, we are going to have lots of enjoyable activities and we are going
to learn a lot of thing.”
3-She/he shows some pictures about birthday parties and asks “What do you see in the pictures,
what are these people are doing?’’
4- She/he gets the answers from the students.
5- The teacher says “so, would you like to make an enjoyable activity and talk about birthday
parties a little?'’
6- After she/he gets reactions from the students, she/he says “I want you to stand up and make
two rows facing each other. You are going to ask these questions”.
7-She gives the questions, which are “how do you celebrate the birthday parties in your family and
what kind of gift would you like to get in your birthday?”, and wants them to ask each other in 60
seconds. Then, she adds “when I say time’s up, you will change your partners and go on asking
the questions.”
8-The teacher finishes the activity by saying “okay everyone, thank you all, we are done with
this activity, and please take your seats.’’
While-reading stage
Objectives:
to practice reading skills, mostly skimming, scanning,
to enable the students to make skimming with a finding title activity
to have them speak and work in groups with the activity which is for changing the genre.
Procedure: The teacher starts the while-reading part with skimming activity. She/he asks the
students read the text quickly and find an appropriate title for the text. After she/he checks the
instruction, they complete the activity. Then the teacher introduces the new activity which is
“changing the genre”. Students are supposed to turn the reading text into a speech, they are
supposed to play roles according to the text in groups. Teacher gives an example to clarify the
instruction and monitors each group while they are working. After that, she/he finishes the activity
and gets feedback from students by asking what they think and feel about the activity.
Steps
1- The teacher says “Now, we are going to read a text about birthday parties to learn more. I
want you to read the text quickly and find a suitable title and write it on the text. You’ll work
on your own and you have one minute.”
2- She/he checks the instruction and gets the answers from students.
3- The teacher introduces the new activity by saying “we have a new activity, in this activity,
each of you will play a role.’’
4- She/he gives the instruction “Now, six of you will be a group, so we’ll have four groups. I’ll
give you your role cards and you will play a role in your own groups according to information
in the text and you have 10 minutes.’’
5- The/he gives an example to clarify the instruction and monitors each group while they are
working.
6- The teacher finishes the activity by saying “alright everybody, this activity is over, you
worked great, thank you all!’’ and gets the feedbacks from students by asking what they think and
feel about the activity.

Post-reading stage
Objectives:
to have them revise what they learn in the lesson,
to practice writing skills,
to have the students use their creativity and work in groups.
Procedure: For the last activity, the teacher introduces the post reading activity to the students.
She/he wants them to prepare a birthday invitation card for anybody they want to invite by working
in pairs and to present their invitation cards to the class. The teacher shows an example invitation
cards. Then she/he checks the instruction and monitors the students. After they finish the cards and
present them, the teacher finishes the lesson.
Steps
1- The teacher says “we are going to make another enjoyable activity”
2-The teacher gives the instruction “you will prepare a birthday invitation cards for yourselves
or anybody that you want. You will work in pairs and you’ve got 10 minutes”
3- She/he checks the instruction.
2- She/he shows an example invitation card to help the students.
3- The teacher monitors the students while they are working.
4-After they finish the cards, they present the cards to the class.
5- The teacher finishes the lesson by saying “there, our lesson is over, thank you all for your
participation and for this enjoyable and useful lesson, you’ve made a good job! Hope to see
you next lesson!’’
