EM FAQ: How to import/export an Ansys Maxwell


model in Workbench?

Release / Version:
ANSYS Release R20.2 / Electronics Desktop 2020R2 – These instructions may not apply to
earlier versions. Subsequent version changes and updates may affect some details of
usage.

FAQ Overview:
This document demonstrates how to import/export Maxwell design in Workbench
environment. It is common to use Maxwell in its standalone interface, when the
comprehensive Multiphysics capabilities provided by the rest of the Ansys Suite.

Solution
1. Importing an ANSYS Maxwell model into Workbench
1) Open a Workbench project (both new projects and existing projects are supported).
2) Close the Maxwell project if it is still open.
3) Click File -> Import from the Workbench menu or the corresponding toolbar button. From the File type
dropdown, choose ANSYS Electronics Desktop Project to view all ANSYS EM projects or one of the other file
types to filter the list. Select the project to import and click Import. The results should also be transferred
without having to resolve (although Workbench will not show a green tick icon for the Solution cell).

4) Multiple design in the Maxwell project. Each design will load as a separate Analysis System when viewed in
Workbench, and will be available for coupling.

2. Exporting a Maxwell model out of Workbench

1) Find the Maxwell file (.aedt) from Workbench file result folder: projectname_Files -> dpall -> Global -> Ansoft ->
projectname.aedt
2) Right mouse click on the projectname.aedt file and edit with Notepad
3) Change “FileOwnedByWorkbench=true” to “FileOwnedByWorkbench=false” and save.

4) Launch the projectname.aedt file within Ansys Electronics Desktop.
