Dynamics of Rigid Bodies (MMB 333)

Tutorial 4
1.
The 1500-kg bakkie goes up 10% incline with
constant acceleration. It starts from rest and
G reaches a speed of 60 km/h over a distance of 150
m. Calculate the normal force under each pair of
wheels and the friction force under the rear
1.2 m
1.2 m driving wheels. The effective coefficient of friction
between the tires and the road is known to be at
least 0.8. The centre of mass of a bakkie is 550 mm
above the ground level.
Answer: 6667.2 N, 7974.8 N, 2853.1 N

2. The drive for the pit cage consists of the winding drum, cage and the rope and a motor
which provides a 0.5 MNm torque on the drum. The drum has a mass of 20 tonnes, a
diameter of 10 m and a radius of gyration of 4 m. The total mass of the loaded cage
and the rope is 5 tonnes. The frictional effects in the bearings can be taken as
equivalent to an additional force of 300 N acting tangentially to the circumference of
the drum. Calculate the upward acceleration of the cage.
Answer: 2.85 m/s2

3. A bicycle front wheel rotates freely about its axis with an angular velocity of 40 rad/s.
It is brought to rest in 0.5 s by application of two brake blocks, each making contact
with wheel 0.3 m from the axis. The coefficient of friction between the braking blocks
and the wheel is 0.25. The wheel may be regarded as a hoop of mass 1.8 kg and radius
of gyration 0.25 m. Calculate:
(a) the contact force between each braking block and the rim of the wheel,
(b) the angle the wheel will turn in coming to rest.
Answer: 60 N, 10 rad

5.
The body of the mass 35 kg rotates with angular
A velocity of 4 rad/s anticlockwise and an angular
G
acceleration of 2.5 rad/s2 clockwise. There is a couple
55 Nm of 55 Nm acting anticlockwise on the body. Find
(a) the pin reaction at A,
(b) the mass moment of inertia about the mass
0.4 m
centre G.
Answer: 381.1 N, 27.3 kgm2

6.
r1 r2 The pulley system indicated in figure has a mass of 5
kg and a radius of gyration of 1.3 m. Calculate the
tensions in the cords and the angular acceleration of
the pulley when the masses are released.
Use the following data: m1 = 8 kg, r1 = 1.5 m, m2 = 15
kg, r2 = 0.9 m.
Answer: 83.0 N, 142.0 N, 0.38 rad/s2

G mass G (as indicated in the figure). It has a mass of 100 kg,
radius of 0.9 m and a radius of gyration about its mass
centre G of 0.25 m. At the position shown it rotates at 5
rad/s in a clockwise direction. Calculate the reaction force in
the pivot point.
0.9 m 0.3 m
Answer: 850.9 N

8.
A 75-kg cylindrical roller is initially at rest and is acted upon
P by a 300 N force P as shown in the figure. There is enough
G friction to assume that the body rolls without slipping.
Calculate:
(a) the velocity of G after 5 s,
(b) the friction force required to prevent slipping.
Answer: 13.35 m/s, 100 N

9.
A homogenous cylinder of the diameter 1 m and a mass
of 60 kg is released from rest at the top of the 30o
P incline. A 300 N force P acts on the cylinder as
indicated. The coefficient of friction between the
cylinder and the incline is 0.25. Find the angular
30o acceleration of the cylinder and all unknown forces
acting on it immediately after it is released from rest.
Answer: 8.5 rad/s2
