OBJECTIVE: The course is designed to aim at imparting a basic level appreciation programme
for the common man. After completing the course, the incumbent is able to the use the computer
for basic purposes of preparing his personnel/business letters, viewing information on Internet
(the web), sending mails, using internet banking services etc.

Unit-1 Knowing computer: What is Computer, Basic Applications of Computer; Components


of Computer System, Central Processing Unit (CPU), VDU, Keyboard and Mouse, Other
input/output Devices, Computer Memory, Concepts of Hardware and Software; Concept of
Computing, Data and Information

Unit-2 Operating Computer using GUI Based Operating System: What is an Operating
System; Basics of Popular Operating Systems; The User Interface, Use of Common Icons, Status
Bar, Using Menu and Menu-selection, running an Application, Viewing of File, Folders and
Directories, Creating and Renaming of files and folders, Opening and closing of different
Windows; Using help; Creating Short cuts, Basics of O.S Setup; Common utilities.

Unit-3 Understanding Word Processing: Word Processing Basics; Opening and Closing of
documents; Text creation and Manipulation; Formatting of text; Table handling; Spell check,
language setting and thesaurus; Printing of word document. Using Spread Sheet: Basics of
Spreadsheet; Manipulation of cells; Formulas and Functions; Editing of Spread Sheet, printing of
Spread Sheet
Unit-4 Introduction to Internet: Basic of Computer networks; LAN, WAN; Concept of
Internet; Applications of Internet; connecting to internet; What is ISP; Knowing the Internet;
Basics of internet connectivity related troubleshooting

Unit-5WWW and Web Browsers: World Wide Web; Web Browsing software’s, Search
Engines; Understanding URL; Domain name; IP Address; Using e-governance website

Unit-6Overview of Emerging Technologies: Applications of IECT, Multimedia and


Applications, Electronic Payments: Overview of Electronics payments, Digital Token based

Objective: The objective of this paper is to provide basic knowledge of computer and its
applications.

Unit-1

MS-WORD:

-File Management: Opening, Creating and Saving a Document, locating files, coping contents in
some different file(s), protecting files, giving password protection for a file.

Unit-2

Page Setup commands;

Setting Margins, tab setting, ruler, indenting

-Editing a document:

Entering text, Cut, copy, Paste using tool-bars

Unit-3

Formatting a document:

Using different fonts, changing font size and color, changing the appearance through
bold/italic/underlined, highlighting a text, changing case, using subscript and Superscript, using
different underlined methods

-Aligning of text in a document, justification of document, inserting bullets and numbering

-Formatting paragraph, inserting page breaks and column breaks


-Use of headers, footers: Inserting footnotes, endnotes, use of comments

-Inserting date, time, special symbols, importing graphic images, drawing Tools-Tables and
borders:

Unit-4 MS-EXCEL

Use of various functions

Creating a table, formatting cells, use of different border styles, shading in tables, merging of
cells, partition of cells, inserting and deleting a row in a table

-Print preview, zoom, page setup, printing options

-Using find replace options

-Using Tools like: Spell checker, help, use of macros, mail merge, thesaurus word content and
statistics, printing envelop and labels

-Using shapes and drawing toolbar

MS-PowerPoint

Design and creation of ppt

Working with more than one window in MS-Word application

How to change the version of the document from one window OS to another window

Conversion between different text editors, software and MS-Word application

Unit-6

Internet & communication

Web browser, search engines, surfing, Google drive storage and synchronization, Google
application package.
