This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you
formulate claims of fact, policy, and value. The scope of the module permits it to be
used in many different learning situations. The language used recognizes the diverse
vocabulary level of the students.

After going through this module, you are expected to:


1. Identify claims of fact policy, policy, and or value;
2. Analyze whether a text uses a claim of fact, policy, or value;
3. Differentiate claims of fact from value and policy; and,
4. Construct an essay using claims of fact, value, and policy.

Directions: Encircle the letter that corresponds to what is described in each item.

1. They are questions or claims that ask you to answer whether something is
responded to with “yes” or “no.”

2. It addresses the relative merit (goodness or badness) of something, asking you

Writing a persuasive essay becomes a lot easier when we consider topics as
claims of fact, claims of value, or claims of policy.

 CLAIMS OF FACT require a discussion about what is or is not valid, what


does or does not exist, or what did or did not happen. They are answerable
by a yes or no and require paragraphs containing supporting facts.

Example: Does the world call for cooperation in fighting the pandemic?

 CLAIMS OF VALUE address the relative merit (goodness or badness) of


something. They usually ask you to choose between things, ideas, beliefs, or
actions and explain your choice.

Example: Which is more valuable, health, or economy?

 CLAIMS OF POLICY talks about needed actions, required procedures, laws


that need to be changed, and policies to be followed.
