The document discusses the operation of thermal power plants, focusing on the combustion of pulverized coal and air in boilers to generate steam. It highlights special types of boilers, such as the Lamont and Benson boilers, and outlines the main and auxiliary parts of a thermal power plant, including the coal handling plant and turbine. Additionally, it describes the four main circuits involved in the thermal power generation process.

Thermal Power Plant

Dr. Debomita Ghosh

The mixture of pulverized coal and air (usually preheated air) is taken into boiler and then
burnt in the combustion zone. On ignition of fuel a large fireball is formed at the center of
the boiler and large amount of heat energy is radiated from it. The heat energy is utilized to
convert the water into steam at high temperature and pressure.
Special Types of Boilers
Introduced by Lamont in 1925
High pressure water tube boiler which use forced circulation of water
45000 Kg/ Hr steam Generation
120 Bar Pressure
Formation of Bubbles in the tube was the major drawback
Benson Boiler
