UNIT PURPOSE
Pre-requisite Course: PHY 111: Introduction to Physics Purpose of the Course

To provide students with knowledge of basic electricity, magnetism, electronic components and
their uses, charges, currents, diodes, transistors. Demonstrate understanding on electromagnetic
radiation, laser process and implement holography.
Expected Learning Outcomes of the Course
By the end of this course, the learner should be able to:
i). Demonstrate basic computer hardware components.
ii). Illustrate ability to disassemble, assemble, install and configure the hardware
components
iii). Boot, install and customize basic system and application software
iv). Trouble shoot computer hardware and software

Course Description
Primary system components, maintenance tools and equipment. Motherboards. Motherboard,
Microprocessor types and specifications, memory, adapter memory configuration and
optimization, the power supply. Backup RTC /NVRAM Batteries, Input devices: - types of
keyboards, keyboard technology, Mouse- mouse interface types and operations. Computer
disassembly and reassembly, General routine maintenance procedures, Safety procedures:
examine potential hazards to personnel and equipment, ESD, and items that require special
disposal procedures. System management, functions, sample configuration programs, Software
installation; system requirements, types of set-ups, installation and customization,
loading/adding and configuring application device drivers. Create an emergency boot
disk. E-Waste: Terminologies, e-waste management, ethics in e-waste, recycling of E-waste,
E-waste disposal, emerging innovations in e-waste. Use of e-waste for IoT in agriculture and
real- waste.
