Discovery 11: Lab - Software Image Management

Introduction
Complete this lab exercise to practice what you learned in the “Software Image Management” section of this
course. In this activity, you will familiarize yourself with how to use the Software Image features of Cisco EPN
Manager.

Task 1: Review Software Image Management Settings


The purpose of this task is to review the settings associated with Software Image management.

Activity Procedure
Complete these steps:

Step 1
To launch the lab simulation, click the link in the right pane.

Step 2
From the menu, choose Administration > Settings > System Settings.

Step 3
From the submenu, use the search menu to locate Software Image Management. Type Software in the search
field and click the magnifying glass icon.
Step 4
From the list of results, click Software Image Management.

Step 5
On the Software Image Management page, review the available options. Click the question mark icon for
more details about an entry.

Step 6
To view the image transfer protocol order, click the Protocols tab and notice the protocol order in the Selected
Options box.

You do not need to make any changes to the protocol order.


Note: HTTPS is required for NCS 2000 and ONS devices.

Activity Verification
You have completed this task when you attain this result:
You have reviewed the Software Image Management settings.

Task 2: Manage an Image


The purpose of this task is to import a device image to the repository. In this example you import an image directly
from the device. Cisco EPN Manager supports other methods of image import including import from network-
accessible IPv4 or IPv6 servers, import from FTP server, and import from a client machine file system.

Activity Procedure
Complete these steps:

Step 1
From the main menu, choose Inventory > Device Management > Software Images.

Step 2
Click the Add/Import segment of the graphic.
Step 3
Make sure that Device is selected for the image source, and click Step 2: Device Selection.

Step 4
From here you can import an image directly from a device to store in the Cisco EPN Manager image repository.
Expand the Device Type and Optical Networking folders and click Cisco Network Convergence System
4200 Series.
Step 5
Choose the device 4206-Bottom.test.com by checking the check box.

Step 6
Click Step 3: Schedule Import.

Step 7
Make sure that Now is selected. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Submit.

Step 8
The Software Images page contains a table showing the last 10 Software Image Management jobs. Locate your
job. (It is the top entry.)
Step 9
Click the Refresh icon periodically until Status shows Success.

Note

In a live environment, this operation could take some time.

Step 10
Click the RunID number for your job, and review the job details.

Step 11
Return to Inventory > Device Management > Software Images by clicking Software Images in the header text.

Step 12
On the left side of the screen, view the Software Image Summary pane. Expand the NCS4200 entry to view the
newly stored image file.
Step 13
To view detailed image information for the image 16.8.1b, click the value in the Count column.

Step 14
Click the filename of the software image that was collected, to view further details. If you know the RAM, FLASH,
and ROM requirements, you can add them here. They are used during upgrade analysis.
Step 15
Return to the Software Images page by clicking the Software Images text in the header.

Activity Verification
You have completed this task when you attain this result:
You have successfully added an image to the repository.

Task 3: Distribute Software Images


In this task, you will distribute a software image to a network device.

Activity Procedure
Complete these steps:

Step 1
From the Software Image Summary pane, verify that you have an NCS 4200 software image present in the
repository.
Step 2
Click the blue Distribute segment from the Software Image Upgrade/Downgrade Workflow pane to begin the
workflow.

Step 3
Select the NCS4200 software image with the filename ncs4200rsp3-universalk9... by checking the check box
at the left of the image filename.
Step 4
To continue, click the box marked 2 Device Selection. Expand the Device Type and Optical Networking folders,
and click Cisco Network Convergence System 4200 Series.

Step 5
Check the 4206-Bottom.test.com check box.

Step 6
To continue, click the box marked 3 Image Details Verification. An upgrade analysis is performed and then the
image and device are listed.

Step 7
To continue, click the box marked 4 Image Deployment.
Step 8
Accept all default options and click the box marked 5 Schedule Distribution.

Step 9
For Start Time, choose Date. Set the job to run at 11.01 PM and click OK.

Step 10
Click Submit. Notice the confirmation message. Click the Click here link to view the Job dashboard.

Step 11
Because the job is scheduled to run in the future, it does not appear in the view initially shown. To locate the job,
click the Job Dashboard link in the header.
Step 12
In the Jobs table, navigate to User Jobs > Software Image Distribution. Notice your SWIM Distribution job,
which is listed with a status of Scheduled.

Activity Verification
You have completed this task when you attain this result:

You have successfully scheduled a software distribution to a device.
