BIOSTATISTICS-I

CREDIT HOURS 2 (2+0)

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The Biostatistics course is aimed as just an introduction to this topic of biostatistics, providing helpful
background knowledge for the forthcoming course of Research Methodology and useful tools to
support students in their Research Project coming up in Semester VII and VIII. Students will no doubt
get further tuition in this area if they go on to higher level studies following their bachelor’s
programme, however by the end of this course they will learn how to collect, manage, present and
interpret data. The skills acquired in this course will also be essential when reading scientific
literature for lifelong learning whether they go on to higher education programmes or not.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

By the end of the course the students will be able to:

 Describe the difference between qualitative and quantitative data
 Gather data by various sampling techniques and state the limitations
 Present a given data set in various graphical forms, such as scatter diagram, bar charts, etc.)
 Analyse a given set of data to ascertain mean, median, standard deviation, etc.)
 State what is meant by significance, correlation, inference when analysing data.
 Discuss some current public health statistics for Pakistan, especially in the field of prosthetics
and orthotics
