Answer all Questions from Part – A and Part – B
The figures in the right hand margin indicate marks.

PART – A
Q1. Answer the following questions: [2x15]
a) Briefly explain the two types of services provided by IEEE 802.11.
b) In Selective Repeat (SR) protocol, suppose frames through 0 to 4 have been transmitted. Now,
imagine that 0 times out, 5 (a new frame) is transmitted, 1 times out, 2times out and 6 (another
new frame) is transmitted. At this point, what will be the outstanding packets in sender’s
window?
c) List out the basic differences between TCP and UDP.
d) A channel has B = 4 KHz and a signal-to-noise ratio of 30 dB. Determine maximum
information rate for 4-level encoding.

e) Find the minimum Hamming distance of the coding scheme in d (00000, 01011), d (00000,
10101), d (00000, 11110), d(01011, 10001), d(01011, 11110), d(10101, 11110).

f) Mention the port of FTP used for control connection and data connection?
g) Encode the given data word 100110001 using NRZ-L, RZ, Manchester, Differential
Manchester.

h) A carrier of 1MHz and peak value of 10V is modulated by 5KHz sine wave amplitude 6V.
Determine the modulation index for Amplitude modulation.
i) Five channels, each with a 100-kHz bandwidth, are to be multiplexed together. What is the
minimum bandwidth of the link if there is a need for a guard band of 10 kHz between the
channels to prevent interference?

j) Find the class, net-id and host-id of the following IP address:

188.25.44.48
k) What is the purpose of cladding in an optical fiber?
l) Draw the frame formats of ARP.
m) A network with bandwidth of 10 Mbps can pass only an average of 12,000 frames per minute
with each frame carrying an average of 10,000 bits. What is the throughput of this network?
n) Explain the role of DNS server.
o) Write port address for HTTP and FTP protocols.

a) Define multiple access. Briefly discuss the operations of CSMA/CD and CSMA/CA random
access methods.
b) Explain Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) technique. Distinguish between asynchronous
and synchronous TDM.
c) The digital signal is to be designed to permit 160 kbps for a bandwidth of 20 KHz. Determine
(a) number of levels and (b) S/N ratio.

Q3. (Answer any Two) [7X2]

a) Discuss the seven layer functionalities of the OSI reference model with neat diagram. What
are the merits and demerits of TCP/IP model over ISO OSI model?
b) For a given IP address 192.168.10.0/25

polynomial x4+x2+1, find the CRC and verify your answer.
b) What are the differences between frequency division multiple access & code division multiple
access and discuss them?
c) Discuss briefly different types of guided media with suitable diagrams.

Q5. (Answer the following) [7X2]

a) Illustrate congestion control. Explain the principle and prevention policies of congestion
control.
b) Draw the schematic diagram of IPv4 Header. Describe any 4 classes of IPv4 addresses with
its range. Give the advantages of IPv6 over IPv4.
