ASSIGNMENT #1 - Characteristics of Functions DUE: THURSDAY NOVEMBER 7th

Ensure you show all your work.

Chapter 1: Introduction to Functions
Full solutions must be provided

1. James has 120 m of fencing. He wants to enclose a large rectangular garden and
divide it into three equal parts.

a) Write an area function in terms of the width to model the total area of the
garden
b) Determine the dimensions that will provide the maximum area
c) Determine the domain and range of the function

2. Graph the following function using a parent function table of values (at least 3 points) and mapping.
2
f ( x)=2( x−4 ) −6
a) Determine the domain and range of f (x)
b) Determine the equation of the inverse algebraically
c) Restrict the domain so that the inverse is a function
d) Graph the restricted inverse on the same grid
*Use graph paper to make your graph to scale

3. Answer the following using the square root parent function

a) Graph the parent function using a table of values (at least 3 points)
b) Determine the domain and range of the parent function
c) Write the equation of the transformed function, f (x) , if the following transformations are applied
i) Vertical stretch by a factor of 3
ii) Horizontal stretch by a factor of 2
iii) Reflection over the y-axis
iv) Horizontal shift 2 units left
v) Vertical shift 3 units down
d) Graph f (x) on the same grid as the parent function
e) Determine the domain and range of f (x)
*Use graph paper to make your graph to scale
