ne of the most memorable celebrations I took part in was my close friend Ismat’s
O
wedding, which took place last summer in the Bakhmal district of Jizzakh,
Uzbekistan. It was a lively, traditional Uzbek wedding with all the cultural elements
that make such events vibrant and unforgettable. Weddings are major occasions in
Uzbekistan, and this one was no exception—it was packed with joyous activities,
delicious food, and an endless flow of friends and relatives.
or some context, Ismat and I have known each other since childhood, so attending
F
his wedding felt especially meaningful. We had shared countless memories growing
up, and now, seeing him step into a new chapter of his life was something I wouldn’t
have missed for the world. The event lasted three days, as many Uzbek weddings do,
with each day marked by its own unique traditions.
n the first day, we gathered at Ismat’s home for the “Nikoh” ceremony, which is a
O
symbolic, religious contract that marks the official start of their marriage. The
following day involved a caravan of cars, all honking and decorated with colorful
ribbons, as we escorted the bride to her new home. I was part of this lively convoy,
which is one of the most thrilling parts of an Uzbek wedding. The final day included
the grand feast with pilaf, a traditional Uzbek rice dish, as the centerpiece. I
remember jokingly challenging myself to eat as much pilaf as possible, knowing I’d
probably regret it later.
hat made this event even more special was that nearly everyone in the village

attended. It felt like the entire community had come together to celebrate. Each time
I saw familiar faces from different stages of my life, it reminded me of how close-knit
our community is and how, during big events, we truly come together as one family.
ontrasting with other events, like simple birthday parties that come and go, Ismat’s
C
wedding left a lasting impression. While birthdays can be celebrated again every
year, a wedding like this one felt like a once-in-a-lifetime experience filled with
cultural richness and community spirit.
ad Ismat chosen a quieter, more private wedding, I believe the experience would
H
have been entirely different and perhaps less memorable. The laughter, music, and
endless rounds of dancing are part of what make Uzbek weddings so unique.
ooking forward, I hope to celebrate more weddings like this with friends and family.

These events are not only about the union of two people but also about creating
cherished memories that last a lifetime, and for me, Ismat’s wedding will always be
one of those treasured moments.

Speaking part3
hile important events and festivals can have positive effects on
W
communities by boosting morale and unity, they may also have
negative consequences if not managed properly. For example,
large-scale festivals may cause disruptions in daily life, such as
traffic congestion, waste management issues, or noise
disturbances. Some individuals or groups may also feel excluded
if they don't participate or if the event doesn't reflect their values.
Thus, the impact of these events can vary depending on the
organization and inclusivity of the celebrations.
