Assignment#1: Units and Their Conversions

Objective:

This assignment aims to help you understand different units across measurement systems (SI and
non-SI units) and practice converting between them.

Questions:

1. Basic Unit Conversion (Length)

Convert the following:

a) 5 kilometers (km) to meters (m)
b) 12 feet (ft) to inches (in)
c) 10 miles (mi) to kilometers (km) (1 mile = 1.60934 km)
d) 50 centimeters (cm) to millimeters (mm)

2. Time Conversion

Solve the following:

a) Convert 4 hours and 30 minutes to seconds.
b) A race lasts 2 hours 15 minutes. How many total minutes is that?
c) How many weeks are there in 10,000 hours?

3. Mass and Weight Conversions

Use appropriate conversion factors:

 1 kg = 2.20462 lbs
 1 metric ton = 1000 kg
 1 pound (lb) = 16 ounces (oz)

Convert:
a) 75 kilograms (kg) to pounds (lbs)
b) 5000 grams (g) to kilograms (kg)
c) 3 metric tons to pound

4. Volume Conversion

Solve the following:

a) 3 liters (L) to milliliters (mL)
b) 5 gallons (US) to liters (1 gallon = 3.78541 L)
c) 2500 mL to cubic centimeters (cm³)

5. Word Problem on Units

A car travels at a speed of 90 km/h. How far will it travel in:

a) 2.5 hours?
b) Convert your answer from kilometers to meters.
c) If the same journey were made at 60 mph, what would the time taken be in hours? (1 mile =
1.60934 km)

6. Word Problem on Units

A car travels at a speed of 90 km/h. How far will it travel in:

a) 2.5 hours?
b) Convert your answer from kilometers to meters.
c) If the same journey were made at 60 mph, what would the time taken be in hours? (1 mile =
1.60934 km)

7. Conversion Between SI and Non-SI Units

Identify the SI units for the following and convert them to non-SI units if applicable:
a) 25 meters to feet (1 m = 3.28084 ft)
b) 100 kg to ounces
c) 10 liters to US quarts (1 L = 1.05669 qt)

Real world examples:

1. Cooking Measurements

You are following an American recipe, but your kitchen uses the metric system.

 The recipe calls for 2 cups of flour. Convert this to milliliters (mL) (1 cup = 240 mL).
 It also needs 1 pound of butter. Convert this to grams (g) (1 lb = 453.592 g).

2. Fuel Economy Conversion

A car’s fuel efficiency is advertised as 30 miles per gallon (mpg). What is this in kilometers
per liter (km/L)?
(1 mile = 1.60934 km, 1 gallon = 3.78541 L)
3. Medicine Dosage Calculation

A child weighing 20 kg needs a dose of 5 mg per kg of body weight. How much medication (in
mg) should the child receive?

Instructions:

 Format: Submit your work as a neatly formatted PDF with steps and explanations for
each answer.
 Tools: You may use a calculator or programming language (Python, Excel) to assist with
the calculations.
