BA 401-Research Methods
This course will introduce students the scope and importance of research and research
methods in the field of business. After taking this course student will be able to discuss, formulate
and identify a research problem, choose appropriate research approach and research method in the
field of business.
Course materials
Research Methods for Business Students, Mark Saunders, Philip Lewis & Adrian Thornhill 7th
Edition.
In addition to chapters from textbook, I will also assign some articles and case studies. Please note
that you are responsible from all materials that are uploaded to Moodle site of the course thus you
have to regularly check the website and your email for updates and announcements.
Academic Integrity
Please note that plagiarism is a serious offense. All work that you submit in this class must be an
original piece of writing. You can use sources such as books and articles in your work as long as
you properly cite them. Any student engaging in academic dishonesty will receive automatically
a course grade of F.
Pop-quizzes (5%): There will be three pop-quizzes. There will not be any make-up for quizzes.
The material that students will be responsible from in quizzes will be basically the course content
that is covered until the pop-quiz.
Midterm (25%): There will one in-class midterm examination on the assigned literature and the
lecture material 7 weeks into the semester. The closed-notes/books midterm exam will include
essay type questions.
Final (40%): Both the assigned literature and the lecture notes will be covered. The exam will
have essay type questions.
Research project (20%): Students will prepare a complete research report including:
-Research Question: Students will identify a research question they want to answer and discuss
why this research question is important.
-Critical Literature Review: Students will choose articles related to their research question and
briefly summarize their arguments and results considering their own research proposal
-Research Method Selection: Students will explain how and when they will collect data, which
research technique or techniques they will use and why to answer their research questions. They
will discuss sample selection process, whether they will be used primary or secondary data and the
reasons of their choices. Any ethical issue possible to involve should also be discussed
-Findings and discussion: Students will present their findings and discuss their results
-Reflection: Focusing on their personal development, students will discuss what they have learned
during the process.
