for Research
Introduction Guide
Getting Started
Welcome to a different PDF reader! Highlights extracts the
text and images you markup and formats them into notes
on the fly. It will also extract annotations from your existing
PDFs when you open them.

Let’s go through the basics of using the app starting with

the interface. The Toolbar is located at the top:
Go Back/ Show/Hide
Forward Metadata Notes
Search Print

Display Annotation Tools Share Tab

Settings Overview

By default the document window has three panes:

Thumbnails to the left, PDF in the middle and Notes on your
right. If you would like to change the size of any of the views
click and drag the divider between the views.

To show/hide the thumbnails view click the Display Settings

button to the far left in the toolbar. Similarly, to show/hide
the Notes view click the Show/Hide Notes button to the far
right in the toolbar.

Highlights for Mac supports Tabs. To open a PDF as a new

tab click the Tab Overview button and click the + symbol.

To customise the default behavior of the app and much

more check out the settings in the Preferences window
accessible from the Highlights menu in your menu bar.

When you close your PDF window the changes you have
made are automatically saved.
Annotate Faster
To annotate a PDF you select the content with your finger
and use the popover to specify the markup type:
Strikethrough Highlight Image Selection
Copy Underline Note Look Up

Annotation Color

You can also select the annotation tool first from the toolbar
and annotate with that specific tool continuously.

To annotate even faster, enable default annotation colors PRO

in Preferences under the Annotation pane.

To change an existing annotation or add a comment, click

the annotation to bring up the annotation popover:
