The Self, The Society, and

Culture
Have you ever questioned
yourself with this?
• Through the use and development of
technology and philosophy, there are new
ways, models, paradigms, systems to
reexamine and question the true nature of
the self.
It’s crucial and important for us
to understand ourselves, but…
•How do we relate to
the external world?
Do you know who he is?

A concrete example of the IMPACT of the

relationship and interaction of the SELF with
the EXTERNAL WORLD
This is because…

• We are products of our experiences and

interaction with others and the external
reality.
Goals for the Day
• To identify the different Loci/Aspects of
the self
• To know how much of our selves are
essential
• To determine how much of our selves
are products of our society,
community, and family
• To find out how much of our selves
would change in the future
What is the Self?
What is the Self?
• The Self is…
– separate
– self-contained
– independent
– consistent
– unitary
– private
Separate

• It means that the self is

distinct from other
selves.
SELF-CONTAINED AND
INDEPENDENT

•In itself it can exist.

CONSISTENT
• It has a personality that is enduring
and therefore can be expected to
persist for quite some time.
UNITARY
• It is the center of all experiences and
thoughts that run through a certain
person.
PRIVATE
• Refers to information, feelings and
emotions, and thought.
• What it might be?
• What it can be?
• What it will be?
The Self is also…

• Ever changing and dynamic

Understanding the vibrant
relationship between the
self and external reality.
• "Social constructionists argue for a
merged view of 'the person' and 'their
social context' where the boundaries
of one cannot easily be separated
from the boundaries of the other."
(Stevens, 1996).
The Self and Culture
What comes to your mind when you see
a chameleon?
Chameleons…

• Do not have ear opening or outer ears, but are

not deaf
• Can detect sounds in the frequency range from
200-600Hz
• Can view objects with either eye independently,
or with both eyes together
Chameleons have the ability to
change the color of their skin.
Marcel Mauss (1872-1950)

Every self has two faces:

personne and moi.
MOI PERSONNE

Refers to a person’s Composed of the

sense of who he is, social concepts of
his body, and his what it means to be
biological givenness who he is

It is a person’s
basic identity
Jon might have a moi but certainly, he
has to shift personne
In the Philippines, Filipinos tend to
consider their territory as a part of who
they are. This includes considering their
immediate surrounding as a part of them.
Language
The Filipino language is interesting to talk
about. The way by which we articulate
our love is denoted by the phrase…

Mahal
I love you
Kita
Expensive MAHAL Love

In our language, love is intimately bound with value, with being

expensive, being precious. Something expensive is valuable.
Someone whom we love is valuable to us.

The Sanskrit origin of the word love is “lubh,” which means

desire. Technically, love is desire.

To Filipinos, love has another meaning, valuable.

The Self and the Development of
the Social World
• Questions to answer:
– How do people actively produce their
social worlds?
– How do children growing up become
social beings?
How does a Self’s society
change him/her?
• Society is believed to be in active
participation in the shaping of the self.
The Role of Language
• The unending terrain of metamorphosis
of the self is meditated by language.
“language as both a publicly shared
and privately utilized symbol system in
the site where the individual and the
social make and remake each other.”
(Schwartz, White, and Lutz 1993)
MEAD AND VYGOTSKY
• The way that human persons develop
is with the use of language acquisition
and interaction with others.
How does communication affect
the self?
• They believed that the human mind as
something that is made, constituted
through language as experienced in
the external world and as
encountered in dialogs with others.
How does this affect children?
• A young child internalizes values,
norms, practices, and social beliefs
and more through exposure to these
dialogs that will eventually become
part of his individual world.

Self in Families
What is Family?
Human beings are
born virtually
helpless
• Learning, therefore, is critical in our
capacity to actualize our potential of
becoming humans.
• Without a family, biologically and
sociologically, a person may not even
survive or become a human person.
Gender and the Self

that is subject to…

behaviours, and orientation a person
has to find, express, validate, and live
his identity.
• It refers to how a person expresses his
or her gender through words, deeds,
beliefs, and ideas.
• Gender partly determines how we see
ourselves in the world.
This leads us to… GENDER ROLES
Analyze the picture, what does
this show about Gender roles?
What about those “roles”?
• Nancy Chodorow, a feminist, argues that
from youth to old age, MATERIAL OBJECTS
and IDEAS play a huge role in people’s
gender development and role orientation.
How is our gendered self being
shaped?
• It is shaped within a particular context
of time and space.
– It is according to the “era” of society
which a person lives in that can give
him/her freedom to express his/her
gender.
How do we find growth and
development through “Gender
Identification”?
• An individual must fit, adapt, and
harmoniously interact with others to
achieve respect and self-
development.
Should Gender be dictated or
personally discovered?
• Gender has to be personally
discovered and expressed and cannot
be dictated by any culture nor society.
