I’d like to briefly tell you about a few of the main __________ at the palace. You’ll find these
on the map in your information pack.

Now. one of the first things you’ll see is the __________ of King Hupugarta which I just
mentioned. This is on the __________side of __________ Court, the main square inside the
palace grounds, er, Monument Court so called because of the many statues of kings,
__________ and other historical __________ there. Dating back to 123 BCE, the king’s
statue is __________ metres high, made of __________ with a layer of __________, and
dotted with __________. That’s genuine gold, by the way, not just paint. Unfortunately, the
jewels are made of __________. The__________were stolen many centuries ago.

Just __________ the court is the Temple of the Sun. This is the oldest part of the palace and
is estimated to be about __________ years old. It originally had a __________, but now there
are just the __________ that supported it. There are __________ of them altogether, each one
rising between__________and __________ metres from the ground to support a frame of
__________ bars on which the roof originally rested.

To the left of the Temple of the Sun Is the New Palace, and it’s here that you’ll find the Royal
Chambers. Er, it's called the New Palace because it’s the __________ part of the palace
__________, although it was actually completed in __________, which makes it quite old,
really. Anyway, the Royal Chambers were where kings and queens from the middle of the
__________ century had their __________ rooms, __________, bathrooms, and things like
that. It was also where they would have kept all their __________, although these have now
been moved to the palace museum, which is also worth a visit. This was opened in March

museum also houses an __________ collection of weapons, including a __________ that is
said to have __________ to King Hupugarta himself.

UNIT 5

Exercise 1

A: I __________ like to be __________. I would __________ people to __________ me all

the time. You would always be followed by __________ and never be able to have a
__________ life. Being followed on a good day, when you’ve been to the __________ and
are wearing your best jeans, is perhaps __________, but can you imagine how it would make
you feel on a bad day?

B: I would __________ to be famous. I would __________ all the __________ and the
__________ treatment. Everywhere I went, people would know my __________and I
wouldn’t need to__________any more. The best part, though, would be meeting other
famous people. I can imagine that would be so __________. They would come to my private
__________ and I would visit their __________.
Exercise 2

Interviewer: So, you’ve been a famous singer for over__________decades now. What
__________ would you give to someone wanting to become famous?

Celebrity: Well, my first piece of advice is - don’t__________and __________ famous.

Instead focus on being __________ __________something. Choose something you enjoy
and then work hard at doing well in that area.

Interviewer: What did you do to become such a __________ singer?

Celebrity: Well, a good way to be the best is to __________ from the __________. Find
people you __________ in your area of __________. Try to get as close to them as possible.
__________ them carefully. If possible, talk to them. Ask lots of questions. Don’t
__________ them, but try to learn from them. And don’t be afraid to __________, try
something new.

Interviewer: Being the best is one thing, but how did you get yourself known?

Celebrity: Getting yourself known is indeed another skill you must work on. One thing is for
sure, nobody is going to come to you. You have to make __________ for yourself. You have
a __________ to sell and the product is__________. It’s much easier to do that these days,
especially with the internet around. Many people use __________ __________ for this.

Interviewer: Any other piece of advice?

Celebrity: Yes, the last thing I would say is, if you want to be really successful in something,
you will most likely __________ a certain amount of __________. People who fail at some
point often say that the experience has been a great __________ and helped them on the
__________ to success. Try to learn from these moments instead of being __________ of
them. In fact, some of the most successful people have often failed __________ times before
reaching their end goal. What makes them successful, is that they kept on
__________regardless.
Exercise 3

If you're going to take filmmaking seriously, you need to learn how to get the best from your
camcorder. Many people use camcorders these days, to make __________ videos of their
friends and family, and often people just use the __________ functions. These work well
enough for those types of occasions, but if you want to take a more __________ approach for
the __________ of your short film, you should have some __________ of the camcorder's
__________ functions too.

In this tutorial I will start by discussing __________ of the most __________ functions: the
focus, the iris and the zoom. The focus control is usually the __________ focus ring at the
__________ of the __________, well certainly with professional __________. It's a
particularly useful function if used __________. The ring turns anti-clockwise for a more
distant focus and clockwise for a closer focus.

Next, I will talk about the iris ring. This is also __________ on the lens. It manages how
much __________appears through the lens, through the __________ opening called the
aperture. As you let more light into the shot, it naturally becomes __________.

Finally, I will talk about the zoom function. Many people use this function and it's often
__________! Used in moderation, however, this very __________ feature can be a really
useful tool. It moves your perspective closer or further away from your chosen subject. I
would advise, however, that whilst shooting a __________ 200m, you use a __________.

Exercise 4

So welcome to Filmmakers’ Club. I hope you’re excited at the thought of making a film and
that you’re __________ with great ideas. I’ve put you all into groups, so here’s what you’re
going to do. Now you might think the first thing that you need to do is to __________ up
with an idea for a story, but even before that, you need to think about what__________of film
you want to make.

Remember that a film is really a story in __________. There are lots of ways of telling a
story. So, choose a style of film that __________ the __________ of the group. If you have
talented __________, but no good __________, or actors, you might want to make your film
in the style of a __________ or some other kind of __________. Last year group made
an__________film using Lego bricks.
So having decided that you can start to think of your idea for the story. Think about the
movies you like to watch. What is it that makes them interesting? Is it the __________, the
__________? As regards plot, my advice is - don’t be too __________, don't make it
__________. Keep it __________ - the simplest ideas are often the ones that work the best.
Initially, you just need to find the basic __________. You can __________ in the
__________later. It’s a good idea to keep a __________ in your pocket and carry it
everywhere. You never know when a great idea will __________ come to you! And the more
ideas, the better, in my opinion.

The next stage is to write the __________ - for this, you need to __________ the story up
into a series of __________. For each scene, the screenplay should begin with a short
__________ of where it takes place and the time of day, that is day or night. Then the rest
consists of the __________ - the lines the actors will speak, and it should also __________
the camera __________, and give __________ to the actors about how they should move.

Before you can start filming, you need to prepare a __________ of your film to help
everyone involved to imagine the scenes clearly and understand what you are trying to
achieve. This is similar to a __________version of your film but without speech balloons.

And at this point, you need to appoint a __________. This is a __________ role and it's
__________ that he or she is a good __________, as they are the key link between the actors
and the rest of the team. This person will have responsibility for the __________ side of the
project. He or she will have the final say in the choice of the main actors and in directing the
action of the film.

That brings me to the next stage-__________ your film-finding the actors. Don't just
__________ on your friends. Be __________! Perhaps you could __________ on social
media. Or if your film needs a doctor, perhaps you could ask one from the local hospital if
they could spare a couple of hours for you?

And then before filming finally starts, you will need to __________ other jobs, such as
director of __________- in your case, this will be the person who __________the camera;
someone in charge of sound and music, and someone in charge of costumes and props
(including furniture and any other objects needed) and also someone to look after hair and
make-up. But we'll look at these roles in more detail in our next session.

__________. We’ll send you more information about the talks when we send you your tickets
for the fair itself.

C: How much are they?

A: Oh. nothing, they’re free.

C: Great, thanks. And what's the best way to get to the fair from the city centre?

A: Are you driving?

C: Probably not, what with the way the __________ is these days.

A: Well. Duke's Court __________ station is only a __________ ‘s walk away. Does that
help?

C: I'm only a short walk from a station at my end. So, Ural's probably my best option. OK.
one last question, is there anywhere to eat at the fair?

A: Oh. There are lots of __________ and restaurants there. They're generally OK but unless
you're prepared to spend a __________ on a sandwich and a cold drink. I'd go somewhere
else.

C: Such as?

A: Well, you'll be much better off going to one of the cafés or restaurants in the streets
nearby. Don't tell anyone I said that, though.

C: I won’t! Thanks. So. how should I pay for...

Exercise 4

N = Narrator CA = Careers advisor S = Student

N: You will hear the second part of a conversation between a careers advisor and a student
applying for an internship.

CA: Let's just take a quick look at the application form together, like a CV, it contains
standard things like your __________ __________ __________ and references.

S: What kind of references?

CA: The usual ones - __________ from teachers or previous employers that talk about your
__________. But I'd like to focus on a couple of other points first.
S: Sure. What's this large section here?

CA: That's your __________ __________ and it’s one of the ones I wanted to mention. A
personal statement is your chance to write about yourself, what you are __________ at and
why you should get the job. This section helps you to get to the __________ stage. Because
you are all __________, you will often have similar __________ backgrounds, so your
personal statement is where you can make people really __________ you.

S: OK, and what about the other section - here?

CA: Well, that's about your personal __________. Do you have any __________ experience
or any things you did really well at university?

S: Well, we have a __________ business and I have quite a lot of experience helping with
that.

CA: Good, because that's the next most important section: your experience. Right, now let’s
just talk __________ about the interview. Is this your first interview?

S: Yes, it is - I didn't have to interview for the family business! But I've written down some
questions I want to ask in the interview. Was that the right thing to do?

CA: That's good, but for an __________ , it's probably more important to think about how
you will respond to the things they ask you. We can work on this together next time. Let's
__________ an __________ to meet again and I can give you a __________ interview.
Well, what do you think you should __________ to the __________ interview.

S: OK. Does it matter much for an internship?

CA: Well, it's part of the first __________ you will make and that's important. Actually, the
__________ thing to think about is how you __________ without words. The way you
stand, how you __________ someone and the way you __________ . These show a lot
about you, your __________ and your __________ . They are really important.

Exercise 5

Right. let me give you a bit more information about the trip. The first part of our
__________ from London to Paris, going through the Channel Tunnel. It will take us just
over __________ to get to the Tunnel, including a short __________ before we get there
to pick up some more __________ . From there, it'll be another __________ to Paris, so
we're looking at __________altogether give or take a few minutes.

A quick bit of advice about __________. You won't need these until we get to the Italian
border, so I suggest you keep them in the __________ which you'll find in your __________.
Ask your steward, that's the person in __________ of your __________ for a key. That’s why
you won't need to carry them with you all the time.

Now, meals. As I said earlier, __________tomorrow morning will be in your cabins, and this
will be served at about __________, __________. So, you'll be able to enjoy it as we travel
along the __________ French coast Lunch is at __________ o'clock in the restaurant car, and
dinner is at __________ o’clock, although we’ll like you all to be at your table about
__________ minutes __________, a. a __________ to if you could.

When we get to the Italian border tomorrow __________; our train will change engines, and
we'll also be getting a new __________. We'll be taking advantage of the stop to have a look
around. I've arranged a __________ to the local market, a museum and a __________. This
will take about __________ hours, with a __________ for coffee in a local café, and we'll be
back on the train in time for lunch;

A few quick rules. Some of you might have brought your own food or drink on board. That's
fine, but could we ask that you __________ it in your cabins and not in the restaurant or
__________? Could we also ask you to make sure your cabin windows are __________ when
you're not in your cabin? And whatever you do. Don't __________ the train until we reach
the Italian border. Apart from the border and one or two other places, which I’ll tell you
about, any stops we make will only be for a few minutes. I’d hate to __________ anyone
behind.

All right, so. moving on from the Italian border, we’ll be heading.

Exercise 6 N = Narrator SI = Student 1 S2 = Student 2

N: You will hear a discussion between two students about a presentation on a business project
they are studying.

SI: OK, so have you got any ideas for our presentation?
S2: Well, there's an interesting __________ in this magazine about people who are very
successful selling online __________. Some of them have made millions and what they have
in __________ is they started by selling things on eBay.

SI: That does sound interesting. So how shall we __________ the presentation?

S2: Well, I think we need to talk about the __________ of __________this type of business
and then we can discuss the benefits.

SI: Alright, so what can you tell me about the __________? I would imagine it’s quite
difficult to set up any kind of business without any money to __________ it.

S2: But that's the whole point of these success stories. Many of them start with very
__________ and then they grow very quickly. In fact, one of the main difficulties for many of
these companies is just that: they find they are __________ in __________ so quickly that it
is difficult for them to __________all the __________ and they don't have enough
__________to sell to all the customers.

SI: Yes, I can see how that would be a problem. And what about all the __________ you have
to do if you __________your own business - the tax and things like that? Don't you need a lot
of __________ to do that?

S2: Not really. You have to be organized, of course, but I think anyone can do it. Now,
another problem some of the sellers have is finding __________ __________ to store their
products. You need to have lots of products to sell, but if you're working from home, that can
soon start to be a problem - you need to find somewhere to put everything.

SI: Right. And what are the __________ of running this type of business?

I don't expect it's the most__________ job, is it?

S2: Well, maybe not, but it's one of the __________types of business to set up - all you need
is a __________ to __________ the products, a __________ and some packaging to post the
products - it's as simple as that.

SI: But you have to get the products from somewhere?

S2: Yes, but the key thing is to start small, perhaps by selling things you already have in your
home. Then you can start looking for new and different products.

SI: I suppose it's important to __________ products the customer wants?

S2: Exactly. And the main __________of online selling like this is that it's possible to have
millions of __________all around the world - much more than you have with just a normal
High Street shop.

SI: But it must get difficult trying to keep all of them happy.

S2: Yes, I suppose giving good __________ __________ might be difficult sometimes, so
that is possibly a disadvantage.

SI: OK, so we've got some ideas. Let's do some more research and see if we can find some
actual case studies. Why don't we ...

Exercise 7

I had a great day at that new shopping centre but I would complain about one thing - and not
the usual kind of thing - the __________ in all the shops was __________, and I had a
__________ lunch in the café on the __________ floor. No, the annoying thing was the
amount of __________ I saw around me, I think it was because there wasn’t enough
rubbish__________for people to put their empty cans and sweet wrappers in. But, apart from
that, I would say that it’s well worth a visit.

Exercise 9

Hello everyone. So, can you all hear me and see me? OK, my name’s David Edwards and I’m

the __________ modern design, while others hate it. These days, its__________is mainly due
to the fact that it __________ a lot of __________performers.

Now, in a few minutes' time - at __________- we’ll be starting our tour. First, we’re going to
make our way down to Market Place, which is one of the most __________ squares in the
city - that should take us about __________minutes. There's not too much__________on the

leather goods. Personally, I suggest that you visit the jewellery stalls. You really won’t find
anything like it anywhere else! But if you’re looking for clothes, I’m afraid you’ll be
__________. Wait for this afternoon's visit.

We’ll stop at Market Place for __________and __________ and then continue the tour with a
visit to the Regional Food Centre. Here you can find over __________ types of local cheeses!
There is also fresh fruit juice on sale - orange juice, peach juice, pomegranate juice, produced
in the villages of the region, and __________too. You’re welcome to buy things to take home
with you, but the real reason for our visit is __________. The idea is that you buy food and
drink from the stalls and take it to eat in the lovely open- air dining area.

And finally, in the afternoon we will be visiting the Fashion Fair in the __________ centre on
the __________ of the city. This is a huge venue, so try not to get lost. There is a whole hall
devoted just to v - every kind of shoes and boots you can imagine. You can easily find it
because it has a __________roof. Just don’t go through the __________ doors at the
__________ of the centre - you have to pay for that part of the exhibition. And if all that
shopping has__________you, there’s a café where you can rest your weary feet! That’s in the
building with a __________ sign. But don't worry, I’ll remind you all about that later.

Right, everyone’s here now, so, if you’ve all got your shopping bags, let’s go!

UNIT 7[5]

Exercise 2

Now, I’ll just give you a few directions before you leave, especially for those of you who are
feeling a bit hungry. When you leave the main building, you come to an area where the
__________ divides. If you take the __________path, you’ll see the __________ on your
right, and exactly __________ the lake on your left is the __________. Apart from selling

crossroad, also on your __________, is the __________ __________. If you’re thinking of
having a picnic, the best place to go is the picnic area, and for this you need to
turn__________at the crossroad and __________ __________a few metres __________of
the path, you’ll find the picnic area on your __________.

Now, if you have any questions, I'd be happy to answer them and, once again, I really hope
you enjoy your visit. Thank you.

Exercise 4

Manager: Good morning everybody. I'd like to welcome you to the festival. My name is
Sandy and I'm the general manager of Castle Music Events. I just want to take a moment to
mention a few things to you before you go and have your detailed briefings in your work
groups. You all have a copy of the plan for the festival grounds. Now, most things are
obvious, but I'd like to point out first the __________ toilets here __________ on the side of
the __________ __________. Kindly do not use these yourselves - your own facilities, the
__________ toilets, are __________ the food tent. Also, there are public telephones behind
the stage.

I mention these two things because they are places that visitors often __________
__________. For yourselves, one of the most important places is the staff __________ point.
This is new this year and the only thing to remember is that it exists and that when you refer
to a meeting point between yourselves you need to make clear which one you are talking
about. The staff meeting point is between __________and the __________ __________area.
This is not marked on the general maps but it is marked on the maps you’ve got there. The
visitors’ meeting point is, as you can see, in the __________ of the main area, between the
_________ ___________ and the__________. Now another important facility is the first aid
tent. This is a big round tent so you can't miss it. It's on the __________side of the
__________ - again, as you come in. There are

many other first aid facilities all over the festival site. In fact, there is a first aid box in every
tent and sales point, but this is the __________point. Finally, l wanted to mention the
__________ on the site. Every year the festival gets bigger and bigger and so every year we
have to increase the security __________. We have a number of small security offices, one
being __________ the entrance, but the main security office is __________ the disabled
viewing area — it's next to __________ __________so that the __________can keep an eye
on what’s going on there. And of course, in that office, there is a full supply of first aid
equipment, too. And don’t forget, those of you who can’t wait till you get your __________
at the __________ of the festival there are some cash machines in the __________ of the bar.

Exercise 5

Tanya: Hi Jane, this is Tanya. I'm calling to make arrangements for the concert on Saturday. I
can’t believe you’ve never been to the Arena before. I often go at the weekend. There isn’t
just the Arena concert venue, there are also lots of other things to do: shopping, restaurants,
and exhibitions. I’m giving Melissa and Sarah a lift, so shall we all meet up for a coffee
before the concert? I’ll give you directions. OK, listen carefully.

As you __________ __________ the main entrance, you come to a __________ with a big
__________ in the __________. This is where people usually arrange to meet up and
sometimes they have live music here. __________ the square, on Main Avenue, on your
__________, there are several __________, and __________these on your __________is an
__________ __________. There used to be a __________here, but they __________ it when
they finished building the Arena.

So there are several __________ shops to choose from, one__________the fountain and one
in the __________ end of the building, but I suggest that we go to the one at the end of Main
Avenue, because it’ll probably be less busy than the others. It’s __________ at the end after
you pass the __________ __________ on the __________. So shall we all meet there at
seven o’clock?

Then, after we’ve had a coffee, to get into the Arena we just need to go through the shopping
centre, which will be on our right once we go back down Main Avenue. It can be a bit
tempting, but there’s no other way to get there, as the Arena is the other side of it. Oh, and
there are toilets beside the entrance if you need them. And then after the concert, they open
the door opposite and you can go straight out into the car park, which is very convenient. Let
me know if you can make it for seven. I’m looking forward to seeing you - it’s been a while.

Exercise 6

First of all, welcome to our activity summer camp. I hope you enjoy all the activities we have
on offer. We start our tour at the __________ theatre here, where we hold many of our
evening activities. From here you can see our various watersport activities. Directly
__________ __________ __________ the campsite, on the __________ of the lake, we have
the kayaking centre. And then in front of the __________, we have an area reserved for
__________. Swimming isn’t __________ here.

If you like racket sports, just __________ the beach you can practise __________ in the large
building. That’s quite popular in the evenings. We also have some outdoor __________
__________ We used to have basketball in the building too, but now you can play it on the
court behind the building. And if these activities make you hungry, the path from there takes
you straight to the cafe and dining hall.

However, we’ll continue our walk along the __________ __________ and I’d like to draw
your attention to two other areas. One is this part of the lake, which is perfect for swimming,
but, for safety reasons, only when an instructor is present. Unfortunately, we can’t offer
sailing as an option here this year. And I also want to point out, just __________ the lake, a
__________ for __________. Some people in the past have also gone __________ on the
track, but there were a few __________ because there isn’t enough __________ for runners
and cyclists, so now running isn’t __________.

So now let’s take this path here, __________ the tennis courts. On our __________, you can
see there’s a __________ __________. Gary’s our coach and he’ll be organising tournaments
during the week. He’ll arrive tomorrow because he's taking part in a rugby game today.

And now if we walk up to the __________ of the tennis courts, we can see the
__________field, surrounded by trees. And in the building just to the __________ of this,
you can hire equipment for the archery and buy snacks and drinks. It also has some
__________ __________ __________, so you can go there and have a game if the weather
turns bad.

Exercise 7

Good morning. I’d like to thank the council for agreeing to this meeting and for welcoming
us here today to explain to you our plans for Pine Woods Centre. Our aim is to make Pine
Woods a place where people of all __________ can come and enjoy their free time. The
centre will feature our TreeTops Challenge - only for the brave and fearless! For the less
brave, and for families with children, there will be __________ __________, indoor and
outdoor, and a feeding area for __________ __________and we will also offer cycle trails
through the woods.

I’ll give you an overview of Pine Woods first and then tell you more about each area in more
detail. This first slide shows the overall __________ of the centre and where all the activities
will be situated. As you can see from the map, the entrance to this attraction will be on the
__________ side. As visitors enter from the car park, they will walk along this path leading
them to the __________ and __________. The __________ __________ will be where
tickets are on sale and therefore needs to be__________the entrance. So this building here on
the __________ will be the __________ and the building on the __________ will be the
__________ __________. There will also be a picnic field __________ the __________ for
the warmer months. It’s the area just to the __________ of the café as you look at the map.
And in the __________ __________ corner of the picnic field we’re planning to have a
__________ __________, where people can hire a __________ and bring their own food to
cook. It’ll be great for parties. In summer we plan to have bands performing here in the
evenings.

To the __________ of the gift shop is where the TreeTops Challenge will __________
__________. There’s a path here __________ through the forest, and up in the trees, there
will be all sorts of high-level adventure apparatus- rope swings, awesome rope bridges and
tunnels, and zip wires where you can fly way above the forest floor. This adventure
experience will only be open to those aged __________ and __________.

__________ the Tree Tops Challenge there will __________ __________ __________. To
get to it, you go along this path from the entrance until you reach the __________, then you
turn __________. The young children’s playground will have a __________ around it,
making it safer and keeping them away from the lake. The indoor play area, only for the very
young, will be on the __________side of the farm, __________ the café and just
__________the picnic area.

And finally, let’s turn our attention back to this area here, where the paths meet and form a
crossroads. This path leading to the east end of the __________ will take our visitors to the
area which houses the farm animals. Children will be able to watch the animals being fed and
cared for, and in some instances, they will be able to __________ the animals themselves.
The __________ will be in this__________ area on the __________ here, directly
__________ the __________, and the __________ will go at the very __________ there. We
haven’t quite decided on the other areas yet.

So those are our plans. We hope they will be approved, and we look forward to welcoming
you back in the not-too-distant future to see the final result.

(P = Radio presenter, J = Julia)

P: Good morning. On today’s show, we’re happy to welcome Julia Samson, who is
organising the exhibition now at Somerton Town Hall. Julia, what is the theme of the
exhibition?

J: It’s called the Earth Matters Exhibition and it’s __________ a showcase for __________
and __________ working to improve the __________. So we have __________ farmers, you

__________ __________ appliances, for example, solar cells which heat your home with the
power of the __________ instead of using __________or oil. And so forth. Now, a lot of
people ask me - what exactly is the purpose of the exhibition? Well, some of the stalls do
__________ the public and other businesses to __________ their products. But the principal
reason for running this fair is to__________ __________ about what people can do to live a
greener lifestyle. Now we can’t run the exhibition as often as we’d like. We have __________
to run it __________ every year but at the moment we have it __________ a year, either in
__________ or in __________. We’d really like to encourage people to drop into the
__________ at any time. It’s on from today, that’s __________ of course, till

£__________ for adults and £__________for the unwaged. You can buy them at the
__________ of the Town Hall but you can also get them from Green Apple Health Foods -
which is in the __________ __________ opposite the library.

Q4–6

J: This time we have three new exhibits, which I think listeners will find particularly
interesting. The first is the Cycle Safe stall and it’s very easy to find. After you’ve walked
through the entrance area turn immediately __________ and walk __________ Hydroponics.
It’s right __________ __________ to that. It’s well worth a visit because it shows you how
you can __________ a __________ safely even on the busiest roads and they’re organising
lots of games and competitions so children will love it. The next new exhibit I want to tell
you about is a wonderful new organic food outlet called Riverbank Farm Foods. It’s right

exhibit, which is __________Electric Cars and ____________________ the __________
exhibit called Green Growth. There are lots of the latest devices on show and it’s very
educational. At this exhibit, you can …
UNIT 8

Exercise 1

Hello everyone. Today I’m going to talk about a project I’ve done about the mountain gorilla.
I think it’s a truly fascinating animal. They __________ in Africa - Central Africa, in fact.

So now I’m going to talk a little about where they live. As you can probably guess, and as
you can see in this first photo, their name reflects the environment they live in – __________
mountain forests.

Now just like all other apes, they build nests out of __________ But they don’t make their
nests __________ up as other species do - mountain gorillas make them on the __________
instead. And they sleep wherever they __________ their day and they rarely sleep in the
same __________ __________!

So, I’ll move on to talk about the physical __________ of the mountain gorilla. In other
words, what it looks like. So here are some more photographs on screen for you all to have a
look at. This gorilla here on the __________ is a __________ gorilla. We know that he’s an
__________ male gorilla because of the __________ of his coat. As you can see, his coat is
__________. He’s called a __________ __________. __________ male gorillas are called
__________ __________. And there’s an obvious reason for that! Yes, a young adult male
has a black __________. As he gets older, his coat turns from black to grey.

Next, I’m going to tell you a little about the diet of the mountain gorilla. Interestingly,
mountain gorillas are __________. In other words, they survive on a diet of __________.
As you can see from this next picture, this gorilla is eating leaves. They also eat __________
and __________. They occasionally eat __________ too, but only when they're very
__________! And it might interest you to know that mountain gorillas very __________
drink water, even though they live in a very __________ climate. It appears they get all the
water they need from plants.

I’d like to conclude by talking about some of the __________ that mountain gorillas face.
They are in serious danger of __________ from our world altogether. Let’s have a look at
__________ reasons why they're in such danger. And both of these reasons are connected to
__________ __________. Firstly, people are __________ the mountain forests where these
gorillas live. They’re __________ down the __________ to build __________ and
__________ .Mountain gorillas live in close family groups and this means that it’s difficult
for them to get __________ to eat in the small areas they now have to live in. Secondly,
gorillas are also suffering as a result of __________. Sadly, some people find and kill them
to sell. So it’s a very sad situation indeed for these beautiful animals.

Exercise 2

Good morning, everyone. In today’s lecture, I want to talk to you about a very __________
animal here in Britain. In fact, you could say that it’s one of our __________ loved animals!
It’s called the American bullfrog and yes, it does in fact come from America - the east of
America, to be exact - and it was brought to Britain in the early __________ century, so you
could say that it’s been here for quite a long time. It wasn’t brought here __________
__________ - it actually arrived in a big container of __________ plants. In other words, it
was __________ introduced into Britain.

Now, I’ll tell you a little about its __________. The American bullfrog is a very
__________ - and __________ - species of frog. And when I say it’s large, I mean large.
Interestingly, __________ American bullfrogs are usually much larger than the
__________. In fact, they can weigh up to __________ grams, whereas the __________
only go up to about __________ grams. Take a look at its __________ - it’s really
__________ and __________, isn’t it? And you can see its __________ - just here - that's
quite large too.

Now, both the male and the female American bullfrogs have __________ or __________
bodies and have __________ spots on the top. But there’s one important difference between
them - the male’s throat is __________ but the female has a __________ one instead. And
the other difference is their __________, here just behind their eyes. Those of the
__________ are much larger than the __________’s.

So, let’s move on to __________ we so __________ the American bullfrog. Well, this is
because it has __________ our own __________ species of frogs. Firstly, it breeds very
__________ indeed. For example, female bullfrogs can lay up to 25,000 __________ every
single season. And secondly, the American bullfrog is very __________. In fact, they eat just
about anything they can put into their mouths! As well as other frogs, they eat __________,
__________ and have even been known to eat __________ and __________! So, in other
words, they eat the __________ sources of our own native species. Thirdly, they carry a
__________ that is dangerous to other frogs. And finally, they don’t just damage our natural
world, they cause __________ damage too. Around £ __________ has been spent
monitoring the American bullfrog in the wild.

So, as scientists, we can learn a lesson from this about the dangers of introducing any living
species into a new environment.

Exercise 3

OK everyone, I think we’re ready to make a start. Now, when you think of a dangerous
animal, what do you think of it? A __________ perhaps?

Or maybe a __________? Most people think that all dangerous animals live on land, but in
fact, some of the most dangerous animals on the planet live in our __________ and
__________. I’m going to talk today about one of these - the box jellyfish.

There are different types of box jellyfish, and they are found in warm __________ seas
anywhere from the Indian Ocean to as far north as Japan, but the most dangerous ones are
found in the __________ around __________.

OK, so now let's examine what these box jellyfish look like. There are no __________ for
guessing why it’s called a box jellyfish! You can see that it’s __________ like a box or a
cube, with __________ sides and __________ corners. And you can also see that its body
is __________ __________.

So, let’s take a look at the __________ of the box jellyfish more closely. It’s got __________
of these growing from each of the __________ corners of the box. Now, you may be
surprised to learn that these __________ can grow to a length of __________ metres! And
another surprising thing is its __________ number of __________, that’s __________
eyes on each of its four sides, so __________ altogether.

So now let’s move on to talk about the __________ of a box jellyfish. What is it? Well, a
jellyfish has a lot of tentacles, and each tentacle has thousands of __________ which can
produce a __________. If the tentacles come into contact with a fish or a person, they
__________ to their __________. If the tentacles are very long, they are in contact with a
lot of the body, giving a bad sting which __________ terribly. This can be dangerous to the
__________.

There are __________ ways that people can die as the result of a jellyfish sting. Firstly, a
very __________ sting can cause a person to have a __________ __________. This can
happen within minutes. Secondly, sometimes a swimmer goes into __________ and can’t
make it back to the beach because they are in such __________ __________. If they're in
the water alone, they’ll die.

And now I’d like to conclude with advice on how to help someone who has been stung by a
box jellyfish. If they have had a heart attack, of course, the most important thing is to try to
__________ them first of all. And then, the best thing to help is __________. Yes, the same
__________ you use when you’re cooking! Many Australian beaches keep bottles of it near
the jellyfish warning signs. You should pour a bottle over the tentacles for __________
seconds, and then the tentacles can be removed. However, if you get stung and don’t have
any vinegar, you should pour __________ on the skin. This will help to ease the pain before
you can get further __________ help.

N = Narrator L = Lecturer

N: You will hear a lecturer giving a talk to a group of sports students about what is
Important for success at a sport.

L: I'm very grateful to the university for inviting me here today to talk to you. I'm delighted
to have this opportunity to discuss one of the key things that I think affects how successful
people are at sport.

This is that there seems to be a belief that you either are or aren't __________ talented at
sports. What is worrying is that this type of thinking begins __________, so even
__________ __________ start to think, 'Oh, I'm good at - or bad at - sport,' whether it’s
true or not. So what you notice is that students, by the time they reach their __________ -
__________, are either very __________ in sports or, more typically, they don't do sport
any more at all. It's such a __________ because, in fact, anyone can be __________ at
sport. And this is something I especially want you to think about if you are planning to be
__________ in school.

Of course, to be successful at any sport, you need to __________ a lot of __________ to

training and this is very important, but there is more to success than this. Now, I have done
research into this subject by speaking to many __________ __________, including some
national and world __________, and I think we can see some other __________ features
in all of these successful people.

The first thing I noticed in all the successful sportspeople I spoke to is the __________
__________ to succeed. These athletes are extremely __________ and set their
__________ very high. Even those at the top of their sport have goals, so whether it is
achieving a personal best time, winning a world championship or breaking a new world
record, there is always a goal __________. Importantly, because they have such a clear
__________ on what they want to achieve, they don't allow __________ to get in the way.
On the contrary, it seems that dealing with problems makes them __________ and more
__________.

We've talked about the desire to succeed, so let's now consider how athletes __________
__________ __________. Although all sportspeople dream of winning, all of them lose at
some point in their careers. And it seems that how they __________ their failure can
__________ a __________ role in their future success. The most successful athletes are
able to learn __________ and become stronger.

This links to my next point, which is to do with __________. Now we usually __________
sport with physical strength, but to be really successful, it's often equally important to be
__________ strong. This is so you can deal with the __________, which can be extremely
__________ mentally, and so that you can come back stronger when you __________.
This requires great __________ - believing in yourself - something that all these sports
people seem to have in common.

The next feature might sound a little __________, but what I found really interesting about
all the athletes I interviewed was their in-depth __________ of all __________ of their
sport. As well as all the time they spend training, many of them also __________ hours
__________ the sport and __________ the technique of the great champions, as well as
the __________ and __________ of their competitors.
Finally, I want to point out that it is important to remember that __________ talent is, of
course, an important factor in sporting success, as is hard work and training, but it is
difficult to succeed with these alone. The other factors that I have talked about today also
__________ greatly to a person's sporting __________. Many of you will find that the
people you are going to teach can achieve far more if you help them with these things.
Thank you.

Exercise 2

Good morning, everyone. I’m a __________ here at Orana Wildlife Park, and that means that
my job is to look after some of the animals that we have here. First, let me tell you a bit about
us Um, the word ‘Orana’ means __________ in the local Maori language, and we are very
pleased to see you all here.

As you probably know, we’re run by a __________ and we __________ in endangered

species of animals, __________ and __________. The park grounds cover __________
hectares of land, and we have __________animals altogether, from __________ different
species. So that you can see the animals in their natural environment, we’ve built
__________ and __________ to separate you from the animals and make sure your trip
around the park is safe.

Our animals come mainly from here - New Zealand - and from Australia, Africa and South
America. There are a lot of animals to see and quite a number of things you can do here, so
let me tell you about a few of the exciting __________ before you decide where to go.

One of our most popular animals is a type of __________ called a Rothschild. It's easy to
spot - it has __________horns, rather than the usual __________. __________ are amazing
animals close up, and you have an opportunity to __________them here at the park at
__________ noon or __________ in the afternoon. This is one of the most popular activities
and will be one that you’ll never forget.

In fact, we believe hands-on __________ is very important. So, you can touch or pat a variety
of friendly animals, such as cows and goats, in the __________. This experience goes on all
day and is designed to help children take an __________ in animals and their environment I
can assure you it's not at all dangerous

Another exciting activity for visitors is __________ some of our big cats reach speeds of up
to __________ kilometres per hour during their exercise run. The cheetah is the __________
land mammal, and this 'event' takes place at __________every day. You can watch them go
down their paddock in under __________ seconds.

[Pause]

So, here’s a plan of the park. As you can see, we're here at the main entrance, and there's an
information centre to your right.

Now - it's quite easy to get around the park. We have daily guided walkabout tours, which let
you get up close to the animals. Or if you prefer to be at a distance, you can take the
__________bus and drive around with a wildlife expert.

If you decide to take the walkabout tour, it leaves at __________- that's in just under an hour
- from the meerkat’s enclosure next to us. From there, the walk passes the __________
__________, and the otters in the first enclosure, and then arrives at the New Zealand birds
area in the __________ enclosure just __________ __________ to see them being fed. Then
you go on to the reptile house and the tigers and the rest of the animals!

Alternatively, you can wait until the afternoon walk. There are plenty of other things to see in
the morning. One of these is the African Village. Just turn to your __________ from the
__________ __________, walk past the first __________ __________ and it’s just before the
African wild dogs enclosure, It’s a __________,
______________________________experience.

You can also go to the shop and buy your __________ there.
We have beautiful soft toys - giraffes and zebras - for children and a whole range of T-shirts,
hats and skin-care products with an African theme. After that, why not have lunch in the
picnic area on the far __________side of the park. I'd recommend this because, while you’re
eating, you might __________ __________ of the ostriches on one side of you or
__________ on the other.

For the afternoon walkabout tour, you’ll need to find your own way to the African lion
habitat, which is on the __________ side of the park, just past the __________ __________.
To join the tour, you actually go past the lion habitat. You'll see two __________
__________, keep walking, and the meeting place is about __________ a kilometre after the
second one. If you’ve gone past the zebra, you’ve gone too far!

For those of you who would prefer to travel on the safari bus, this runs from 10.30 to 4 p.m.
There are __________throughout the park, but the first one is at Jomo’s Café, which is
directly __________ where we’re standing - go __________ __________ and it's just in front
of the giraffes. There are various feeding times for the animals, and the bus stops in time for
all of these. So, let me just give you some safety guidelines.

Exercise 3

Tutor: Right - now it’s time for Sylvie and Daniel to give us the results of their survey into
the study-skills course that some of you did last term.

Sylvie: Thanks, Mr Driver. Urn - shall I start, Daniel?

Daniel: Sure, go ahead.

S: OK. Well, as you know, some students in our year did the study-skills course run by the
__________ department last term.

D: Um, it was interesting because it was completely __________ it wasn’t a compulsory

component of the exam course or anything that we need in that way but __________thought
it would be a good idea that it would __________ with our other work.

S: Yeah, so after the course finished, Daniel and I decided to __________ it and ask students
what they thought about it as part of our education assignment.
D: Yeah.

S: So, this is how we did it. our study method. At first, we thought about__________students
face to face. But we have so much other work and we knew it'd be __________ to use
__________ and just send out a__________.

D: Though we also had to write that!

S: Yes, and this method does __________ on students filling it in and sending it back. But the
response rate was pretty __________.

D: Yeah - __________ percent, I think

S: OK - so, first of all, __________ students signed up for the course.

D: And we did __________ sessions over the term, and they took place every __________
morning.

S: A good start to the week, I thought.

D: Yeah - and the rest of the week, we could put things into __________.

S: Mmm. So, what did we expect?

D: For me, I expected it to be useful for all my subjects things like __________—

S: Yeah - that's what Mr Driver had said.

D: -and I was right. I feel more able to deal with difficult texts now - you know, like the ones
we have in __________.

S: You feel you can do it. Yeah, I think other people found that it actually made them want to
read more __________, and read books outside the course list.

D: If you've got time! Um - as for our teacher on the course - Jenny - everyone felt she was
really good. We learned a lot from her. Not because she set a lot of homework or anything
like that

S: the thing people said was that she gave us fascinating __________ and __________ to
work with. Some of them well, we were quite happy to __________ __________ looking at
them at home.

D: Yeah - that's so important. It’s really easy to get bored in class, but that didn't happen.

¬( Pause)

D: OK - so, we’ve done a couple of__________. Let’s have a look at the findings. I'll put up
the first chart.

S: This is your overall view of the usefulness of the course.

D: And as you can see, only a __________ percentage of students didn’t feel it was useful.

S: Which is good

D: Yeah - everyone else had a __________ view of the course, and more than__________of
us - that’s about __________ per cent - thought it was very useful.

S: Which. Well, as this is the __________ time the course has been run, I guess this is a
strong recommendation for it to take place again next year.

D: The next chart shows how useful you felt __________ __________ of the course was.

S: So just to remind you. there was the __________component - that came out top.

D: No surprise there, really.

S: Mmm. On the other hand, __________ __________ was, well, we all like talking, but it’s
__________ something we have to do that __________.

D: Yeah - so that was the __________ useful. Then the note – taking component you found to
be quite useful - and you had a lot of comments about that.

S: OK, so let’s have a look at some of your comments. You said a lot about the activities, but
the main comment seemed to be that the __________ we learned on the note-taking course
helped us __________ more in lectures

D: Several people said that they __________ much less.

S: Yeah. Have a longer __________ span.

D: So that’s the first benefit. The second is that students said they really appreciated the
__________ on when to use a __________ to take notes.

S: Mmm, like many people, I’d never thought of this technique, but now I find it really
helpful.

D: and It's much more fun!

S: Yeah. And then the last comment we wanted to mention was about the type
of__________that we used in the note¬taking sessions.

D: It seems obvious now that a __________ margin down the side of the paper provides
another area where you can add points that you’ve missed.

S: And that makes it a lot easier to read the notes afterwards.

D: OK, so now we’ll look at the results

Exercise 4

Good morning, everyone. Well, last week, we looked at some of the architectural features of
modern house design and today we’re going to move on to look at airport design and how
this has changed over the years.

So, if we start by going back to .. urn . the 1960s and 70s, when there were a lot fewer
airports than there are today, well, check-in desks, customs and waiting areas were all very
__________. They were rather like a __________ __________- er, designed to allow air
__________ in and out of the __________, but not very __________for passengers. Even
though passengers spent a lot of time there, the important features were related to the
__________, rather than the people who took them or indeed the places where the airports
were built.

But that all changed in the next few decades, and if you look at any big airport now, It's more
like a mini city. It combines a __________ centre with a __________ full of shops and
facilities designed to make passengers feel more __________. So, airports have been
__________. And as with any city building, their design now takes into account features
__________ the airport terminal as well.
So why did this change happen? Well, there are two main reasons. The first was the huge
increase in __________numbers in the number of people __________ by plane.

And this was a direct result of __________ __________, with things like, urn, __________
holiday packages and __________airlines with the construction of __________hotels and
hotel complexes. And then people started travelling more __________from one country to
another for things like __________, and so the growth in __________business also pushed
numbers up. In fact, passenger growth has been so significant over the past 30 years that it’s
estimated that some 21st-century airports will need to handle up to __________ __________
passengers a year by 2020.

The second reason for the change is - and this is a key aspect of airport design - people have
realised that the airport is the first place you see when you visit another country. This means
it forms your first __________ of that country and that__________has to be good. Airports
are now called ‘gateways' to the cities they serve, and that raises visitor __________.

Now, what are the changes that have taken place in airport design? Well, the __________
__________ - the inside of most airports - is now completely different. First, the
__________, enclosed airports of the past have been replaced by large, open __________ that
look out onto the surroundings. Look at this picture of __________ airport - there’s a huge
amount of space and light, and this is typical of many airports today.

Second, well, in the past, you had to go outside the airport to get trains to terminals, but now
these are __________ into the design. Also, airport walkways are wide and can __________
__________ the large volume of people who want to feel __________ and__________ - who
want to get around the airport easily in this way, the stress of modern travel has been
__________.

Outside, the buildings have changed, two airports were once __________ buildings with
large __________ and __________ boxes around them. Now they’re designed to fit into their
surroundings.

Look at this picture of the Arctic Circle airport In Norway. The airport itself is surrounded by
__________. So, as you can see, the roof of the airport has been designed so that it’s shaped
like a range of __________There are peaks at the top and then steep sides that touch the
ground.
In the same way, these airports in Thailand and India have beautiful, shaded __________ all
around them that reflect __________of the country. They also provide a connection with
__________ tradition and art another feature that is important inside airports, too.

And there’s one final but very important issue. It's been said that airports are a ‘new building
type’. They’re often __________, steel structures with what looks to the passenger like a lot
of __________. But this is a special glass that can maximise daylight and comfort and cut
down on __________ use. Bangkok's main airport is flooded with controlled daylight in a
__________climate. And this is achieved through the use of new __________ and modem
__________, which have also allowed engineers to come up with methods of reducing
__________. So let’s take a closer look at some of these.

Q: 21-26

Tom: Professor Tomlinson, may Annie and I please quickly ask you a few questions about
the reflective __________ __________? It's just that we're a bit confused as to what you want
us to include and discuss.

Prof. Tomlinson: Yes of course, what are you having trouble with?

Annie: Well, everything really. To start with, what should be included first in the reflective
journal? Perhaps suggestions from others

Prof. Tomlinson: No no, firstly you should include the __________ __________ you set
yourself at the beginning of the module. This section should have been discussed in some
__________ towards the beginning of the course by Professor May. You should be able to
find her __________ on the slides she has provided for the class online.

Annie: Okay, thank you. Professor. Could I also trouble you to take a __________look at my
bibliography and __________? 1 feel like they're missing something; most of our friends’
bibliography are longer.

Prof. Tomlinson: Well, looking at this Annie, I can see that you have used __________ range
of __________, which shows that you have made effective use of __________ __________.
As far as I can tell, you need not make any changes to this, although you might want to
double check that your __________ complies with the Harvard Referencing Style
regulations.

Annie: Oh, I'm very surprised you've said that! Thank you, now I can set my __________at
ease. Tom, you said you wanted to ask Professor about the __________ section.

Tom: Ah yes, Professor, in the assignment guidelines, we are asked to introduce and
__________on our biggest achievement in the past, saying which skills we learnt in the
process, and how these skills can be transferred to various different future

Tom: careers. The only problem is that I don't know what my __________ achievement
actually is. I've only ever worked as a waiter in a __________ __________ during the
summer holidays from university.
Prof. Tomlinson: If you worked as a waiter, have worked with other waiters as part of a team.
Would you say that during your time as a waiter, you developed any __________ skills?

Tom: Yes, well I suppose I was asked to become the team leader of the __________ and
__________departments. But that's hardly an achievement.

Prof. Tomlinson: You might not think so, but if you write that you were offered the position
of the team leader, it shows a lot more about your __________, for example, that you're
__________ and work well in a __________situation.

Tom: I never would have thought to write that down, thank you! I guess I should start
__________ to others __________ often! Annie, do you have any more questions or are you
ready to go back to the library?

Annie: Yeah, I think I've got everything I need. Thank you very much, Professor Tomlinson!
[Tom and Annie alone]

Tom: That was really __________. I'm actually starting to look forward to __________ this
now, and it should be a really useful exercise to prepare us for writing CVs and applying for
jobs. It's shocking how bad I am at identifying my __________ and __________. Professor
Tomlinson has shown me that I definitely need to start displaying some __________!

Annie: Yeah, Tom, you really do. You're always so modest! __________ is great until it
comes to applying for jobs!

Q: 27-30

Annie: Oh no! I forgot to ask the professor about the section on identifying the __________
gained through different activities, do you remember? When it asks you, for example,
whether writing an essay develops your __________ learning and so on?

Tom: Oh goodness, we really should have asked him that. I've been having trouble with it
too. It just seems like such a pointless task. What do you__________the answers are?

Annie: Hmm...I think writing an essay might be a way of identifying and __________ a
problem because you have to state the problem in the introduction and then solve it. I'm not
so sure about __________ __________..I thought they were supposed to develop lots of
different skill sets. If I really had to choose, I'd say that taking exams enables you to become
more __________ in yourself...do you agree?

Tom: Maybe, I really don't know either. What do you think about the last two? Making
__________ notes and presentation notes?

Annie: Oh it's so difficult! I think making class notes has to be a way of becoming a more
__________ learner because you yourself __________ what the important information is and
learn it. That reminds me, I find taking presentation notes is a __________! The professors
__________ much too __________, and I __________ much too __________. [fade out]

Q: 31-38

Welcome back to my series of short lectures on apes. Today we will examine reasons and
historical __________on the __________of chimpanzees, otherwise known as chimps.

The word "chimpanzee” is an umbrella term for __________ different species of apes in the
pemus Pan, which are the Common Chimparzee, or Pan Troglodytes found in __________
Central Africa, and the Bouobo, or Pan Paniscus, which are found in the __________of the
Democratic Republic of the Congo. Chimpanzees belong to the Hominidae family, together
with __________orangutans and indeed humans. Current research tells us that the chimps
broke away from the human branch of the Heminidae family approximately __________
__________ years ago, and remain __________ living relative to humans to this day. More
modern researches into chimpanzees have __________ on their __________ characteristics,
once all __________ and __________ factors have been ruled out in this way, scientists have
unearthed an unfathomable amount of similarities between human and chimpanzee
behaviour. Although much of this research has taken place through __________ of captive
chimps, the results are widely seen as an authoritative reflection of chimps living in the wild.
Chimps live in large so-called __________ comprised of many male and female members,
with the social __________ determined by an individual chimp's __________ and
__________. Through such research, scientists have found that chimps learn and __________
through observation of others behavior. Once in power, the alpha male is often seen to alter in
__________ __________ in order to retain __________, for example, he might puff himself
up in order to __________ others, while lower- ranking chimps are noted to behave more
submissively and bolding out their hands while grunting Female chimpanzees also have a
distinct social hierarchy, with high social standing inherited by __________ .It is not unheard
of for dominant females within a community to unite and overthrow the alpha male, backing
another in his place.

James Diamond, in his book The Third Chimpanzee, suggests that chimps, should now be
reclassified in the genus Hemo, instead of Pan, and there are many arguments still in favor of
this. Male chimpanzees are common on average __________ meters in height, weighing
__________kg, with their female counterparts being somewhat smaller. By comparison, the
Bonobo is slightly__________and __________, but with longer arms and legs: however, both
species walk on all __________, and climb trees with great ease. Jane Goodall made a
groundbreaking discovery in 1960 when she observed the use of __________ among
chimpanzees, including digging for termites with large __________. A recent study claimed
to reveal that common chimpanzees in Senegal have been using __________ sharpened with
their __________ to hunt, however, these reports remain unsubstantiated. Researchers have
witnessed such tools, namely __________, being used by chimps to __________
__________ shells and indeed crushing nuts with __________ __________. As scientific
technology has developed, so too has our knowledge of the sheer extent of the chimp's
intelligence. Research has now shown that chimps have the __________ to learn and use
__________, and understand aspects of the human language, including syntax as well as
numerical sequences.

As I mentioned earlier, the umbrella term "chimpanzee" is comprised of the: the common
chimpanzee and the bonobo, these two subspecies are divided along the Congo River, with
the common chimps living on one side, and the bonobos living on the opposite side of the
river. Over the past few decades, both of these sub-species have witnessed an alarming
__________ in population density, with animal activists now working harder than ever to
__________ those __________ and encourage __________.

Q: 39-40

In addition, next week's episode will focus more closely on how chimpanzees in captivity are
able to learn things through __________ the behaviour of humans, as well as how
chimpanzees’ behaviours have developed over many generations. Thank you very much for
attending this evening's lecture. I hope you found it intellectually stimulating, and I look
forward to seeing you again next week. Goodnight!

whether you could provide me with some more information. Does it open in __________?

Events Coordinator: Yes, of course, Madam. The exhibition will take place during
__________, and will showcase the __________ of automobiles from the very
__________ commercial car in the late __________ all the way through to the present day.

Julie: Is the exhibition open for the duration of July?

Events Coordinator: No, Madam, the exhibition will last _________ ___________, from
the __________ of July to the __________ of July, and then the cars will be taken to
another exhibition.

Julie: Okay. Does the exhibition focus on a __________ manufacturer?

Events Coordinator: No, it will show a __________ range of manufacturers.

Julie: Wonderful! I'm ever so tired of going to these shows and only __________ one
manufacturer. Are there any opportunities to sit in or even drive the cars?

Events Coordinator: There will be many opportunities for you to sit in the cars: however,
some of the cars will only be __________ to - __________. We are yet to be told whether
any of the __________ cars will be available to drive, however, there will certainly be an
opportunity to __________ __________ some of the more modern cars on a purpose-built
track.

Julie: That sounds like great fun! I mustn’t forget to bring my __________ , my husband
will never forgive me!
Events Coordinator: I’m afraid to say that cameras are actually __________ not
__________to bring into the exhibition. There will however be a __________ where a
professional photographer will be available to take photos of you sitting in a car in period
clothing.

Julie: Well, that sounds like it could be fun, but I assume the photos won't be
__________.

Events Coordinator: On the contrary, __________ free photograph is included with every
ticket, but each photo after this will cost £__________.

Q: 5-10

Julie: That's a nice surprise, not many things are free anymore. I've been asking around
about the ticket prices, but haven’t yet had a definite answer. Is it correct that tickets are
£__________ whether you buy them now or __________?

Events Coordinator: I’m afraid not. If you buy the ticket in advance the price is
£__________, but it’s £__________ on the door.

Julie: Oh goodness! I suppose I’d best pay for them now then. Is it possible to buy
tickets from you now over the phone?

Events Coordinator: Yes, of course, Madam. I’ll transfer you to the Box Office Manager,
Mark Edgeworth, that’s E-D-G-E-W-O-R-T-H, and he will probably need to take your
__________ __________ details and some personal details.

Julie: Yes, that’s fine. Before you transfer me, I just need to ask a few more questions.
Will the exhibition be held in the Birmingham Exhibition Centre? I think that’s where I
went last time.

Events Coordinator: No, Madam, the Birmingham Exhibition Centre is currently

undergoing some __________, so this year all exhibitions will be held in the __________
__________.

Julie: __________ __________? I’m not entirely sure where that is.

Events Coordinator: Well, it’s not too far from the city centre. Once you’re in the centre,
you should be able to find signs for the palace. If not, most people in Birmingham will be
able to direct you.

Julie: Hmm...neither my husband nor I am particularly good with directions. Is there

anywhere I can find this information on the Internet?

Events Coordinator: Our __________ will give you an address. Perhaps you could visit
www. __________.com for more detailed information, and they should be able to provide
you with __________ instructions.

Julie: Okay and is this the best way to contact you, by phone?

Events Coordinator: I think the most convenient way to contact us is enquiring

__________, which is much simpler than having to dial various different numbers to reach
the right person! Unless you have any more questions, I’ll transfer you now.

Julie: No, that’s great! Thank you for your help.

Q: 21-25

Jim: Jane, what did you think of Professor Morgan’s lecture? I don’t know about you, but I
find it __________ difficult to believe that light influences the environment as much as he
says. I’ve never seen any __________ articles, websites or anything that verifies his
argument. It’s stupid.

Jane: On the contrary, I’ve seen a great deal of research supporting his argument from a
wide range of renowned __________. Have you looked at the recommended __________
listed on the course outline given to us at the beginning of the semester? All the
information is in there, perhaps you’ve just been looking in the wrong places.

Jim: I never look at the course outlines, I have so many loose sheets of paper I tend to lose
anything I’m given by the end of the day. What’s the textbook they recommend, and where
can I get it from? I should probably go buy it soon; I’m already __________in the course.

Jane: Yeah, you definitely should buy it, and our grades are more important this year! It’s
called ‘The Influence of Light on the Environment’. You should be able to find it in the
bookshop on campus. If not, they’ll order it within two weeks. In the meantime, you
should read up on Ken Simpson’s work, he argues that in order to __________natural
habitats, governments should __________ to turn off __________ in cities __________
__________

Jim: Well that’s __________; I doubt any government would be willing to do that any time
soon. I imagine __________ would become quite __________ without __________
lighting. For this issue, Dave Kepler suggests they could just __________ the __________
lights with more __________ __________ __________. They could even __________
__________lights; that way, roads will be more eco-friendly while maintaining
__________. Although I guess they wouldn’t be particularly effective in __________
countries, especially during the __________.

Jane: That’s quite a good idea actually. The price of solar power is supposed to be on par
with electricity within the next few __________, and it was on the news this morning. I’ve
also heard that, according to Sharon Grey, in countries with more __________,
insect-eating animals tend to be __________ in size. Since there are __________ insects,
and the remaining insects produced a smaller number of __________.

Jim: Yeah, I think I read somewhere that sunlight also has a __________ effect on the
quality of __________, but I’m not sure I believe it. In many __________ countries,
particularly __________ countries, there is a lot of water __________ caused by
__________ rather than sunlight. Nevertheless, Maria Jackson says that in direct sunlight,
the surface of the water becomes more __________, therefore it affects the amount of
sunlight that __________ insects can absorb. Not much research has been undertaken to
prove Jackson’s theory, but it seems to have been widely accepted anyway.

Jane: I’ve never heard of that. I’ll have to look it up on Google. The only other theory I’ve
studied is Barbara Swallow’s study on how declined insect population __________ affects
the __________ population. Not that I’m complaining.. .1 hate insects, especially
__________.

Q: 26- 27

Jim: You have arachnophobia? I never would have guessed. Didn’t your brother have a pet
black widow spider?

Jane: Yes, he did, and I hated it. It escaped from its __________ once and we never found
it. I had __________ for months.

Jane: Okay, now I’m getting __________ __________, let’s change the subject. What’s
your stance on natural and artificial light?

Jim: Honestly, I’m not sure it makes much difference which one you use; species will die
out either way. I think the real argument we should consider is __________ __________
and protection or replacement of __________ __________. Solar power provides us with
an incredible opportunity to replace __________, and governments should definitely
increase spending on research in this field. The theories discussed in our lectures, like
Simpson’s and Grey’s, are so __________ and lack __________, so I don’t understand
why we even study them.

Q: 28-30

Jane: I see what you mean. I don’t like learning unsupported theories for exams, and I’d
rather spend my time learning something else. For example, I’d be much more interested
in studying the animals in __________ parks than researching __________ birds,
particularly the effect of __________ on the __________ of life of animals. As we know,
every year thousands of visitors will drive in their own vehicles or ride in vehicles
provided by the facility to observe freely roaming animals.

Jim: Yeah, that would be really interesting! Especially those animals living in more
__________ countries, like Borneo. Following on from that, I want to study how
__________ animals over from __________ countries to put in our __________ affects
their __________ __________. For example, do you remember when China sent pandas to
Edinburgh Zoo? Apparently one of the pandas became __________, but it was never
explained why. To me, obviously, you can’t take an animal out of its __________
__________ and put it in a cage on the other side of the world. It just doesn’t work... [fade

Q: 31-32

Great Britain is often hailed as the home of __________, with talented players travelling
from far and wide to play for teams in the English Premier League -one of the most
popular football leagues on the planet. Today we are going to take a look back to the
_________century Great Britain in an attempt to trace the __________ of ‘the beautiful
game’ as it is now known.

____________________the 19th century, the game featured a wide variety

of__________and __________ adaptations, which were later smartened up and made
more __________to create our modern-day sports of association football, rugby football,
and Ireland’s Gaelic football. Even up to the __________-19th century, Shrovetide
football or ‘mob football’ was still widely practised. According to the rules of mob
football, there were __________ rules. A player could __________ use any __________
whatever to obtain the ball, such as __________, __________, __________ and gouging,
with the only exceptions being __________ and manslaughter. These games may be
regarded as the ancestors of modern codes of football, and by comparison with later
models of football, they were __________ and had few __________. Towards the latter
end of the 19th century and moving into the early part of the 20th century, however, there
appeared a newfound emphasis on __________ values in football. Perhaps a more modern
example of this can be seen in John Terry’s suspension as England captain following
reports of his infidelity to his wife. Furthermore, as mob football died away, there grew a
greater concern for players’ health and general __________, with many clubs affording
their top players access to frequent medical __________and__________. Despite the
presence of Great Britain’s unique state-funded National Health Service, football clubs are
still seen today providing team members with State-of-the-art healthcare facilities, with
the top clubs even housing their own specialist __________ and __________.

Q : 33-40

Today, football is a key feature of school children’s day-to-day __________, particularly

for __________. With the help of football associations, all schools in the UK are boasting
about their own football teams. This mainly comes as a result of __________ put on
schools and the government by concerned parents, who felt that football education taught
their children __________ lessons and indeed vital __________ skills, such as
__________ and the drive to succeed. Nowadays, many of the UK’s top football clubs
provide training facilities and outreach programs in an attempt to __________ the nation’s
__________ youths.

As I previously mentioned, it was only during the 19th century that football in its uniform
concept truly began to __________, with footballers previously playing according to their
own versions of the rules. However, it was not until the early __________ century that
different players actually began to play according to these __________ rules. Prior to the
19th century, football was played by all the major __________public schools including the
likes of Eton College, Winchester College, and Harrow. In __________ there was a
__________ at Cambridge University in an attempt to lay down the __________ of
football. Present at the meeting were __________ of each of these major public schools,
whom each brought a copy of the rules enforced by their own individual school’s rules of
football. The result of the meeting was what is now known as the ‘Cambridge Rules’,
thereby uniting the rules from across the country into ________ ____________
__________. However, the Cambridge Rules were not liked by all, and a new set of rules,
‘Thring’s Rules’ compounded in the book ‘The Simplest Game’ became __________
place among dissenters.

Across the country, improvements in __________ and __________

____________________ had a knock on effect of __________ increasing __________ to
football games. Football quickly became a social event where __________ would meet
friends, drink tea and chat about the good old days. As football became more and more
popular, it was decided that more __________ should be __________ in maintaining the
quality of __________ amongst other things, and there was even talk of installing
__________ for spectators. However, the question of who was to foot the bill quickly
became a divisive issue, with many believing that the __________ should __________
football’s development as a national sport. But in the end, the onus fell upon Britain’s local
and regional football __________ for the __________ and development of the football
__________. They became responsible for the upkeep of football grounds, began to pay
their best players a small __________, and organised __________ against other local and
regional teams. And there began England’s Football Association, or the FA, as we know it
in its current form, the governing body of football in England. As the FA continued to
grow and __________ greater __________, it was able to attract more and more
__________ __________ men from across the country, before finally accepting
professional talent in the early 20th century. Today, football is played at a professional
level all over the world. Millions of people regularly go to football stadiums to follow
their favorite teams, while billions more watch the game on television or on the Internet,

Q: 1-5
OLIVIA: Hi Zach! I heard you passed your driving test! Congratulations!

ZACH: Thanks, Olivia! I passed just last week. It feels great to be independent and
driving on my own!

OLIVIA: I really want to take __________ lessons, but I haven’t been able to find a
driving school that will give lessons during the __________ so that I don’t have to miss
any classes at __________.

ZACH: The driving school that I used was brilliant and really __________ with their
teaching hours. It’s really __________ to school. The address is 67 King’s Road - that’s
67-KING-apostrophe-S Road.

OLIVIA: Oh that’s perfect! I don’t like the idea of driving around busy streets. Did your
teacher make you drive in __________ __________ or did he mainly teach you on
__________ in the __________ ?

ZACH: My teacher said that I had to learn on both in order to become a good and
__________ driver. We would start in the __________ centre and then drive __________
above the city.

OLIVIA: He sounds like a good teacher. Would you mind giving me his contact details
so I can ask him for lessons?

ZACH: Of course! My mother’s friend Daniel Smith referred me to him. His name is
Allen Sutcliffe.

OLIVIA: Could you spell the surname, please?

ZACH: S-U-T-C-L-I-double F-E.

OLIVIA: Thanks for helping me out, I’ll give him a call tomorrow. I don’t know if I
should learn in a __________ or __________ car. How do I decide?

ZACH: I wasn’t sure which type of car to learn in either. In the end, I chose to learn in a
__________ car because once you’ve learnt how to drive manually you can drive
automatic as well. Most cars on the road are __________ nowadays.

OLIVIA: OK, I think I’ll learn with a manual car too then. Hopefully, the teacher will be
able to give me lessons in the __________ after school!

ZACH: It would be much better if you take the lessons during the day. It will be far
easier for you to learn when there is enough __________ to clearly see everything going
on around you. But you need to be an experienced driver to drive safely at __________ .

OLIVIA: How frustrating! I was hoping I wouldn’t have to take lessons during the
weekends! You’re right though, safety comes first!

Q: 6- 10

ZACH: Speaking of safety, you should wait until __________ to start learning! It’s
really difficult and __________ to drive in the __________ and rain as a learner so you
should definitely wait until the weather is __________ and dry.

OLIVIA: OK, that’s perfect, actually! It will give me some time to save up some money
to pay for the lessons.

ZACH: Tell me about it! I had to work for months before I had enough money saved up!
It was worth all the work when I finally got my driving __________ though!

OLIVIA: The whole process is so __________ ! How much did it cost you in the end?

ZACH: Well, each half-hour lesson cost $__________ and then the final test cost
$__________ . In total it cost me about $__________ .

OLIVIA: Gosh, it’s pretty expensive! How did you find the test? Was it really difficult?

ZACH: No, it wasn’t too bad, and the man was really __________ and friendly. I knew
that I would have to perform two parking manoeuvres during the test, so I practised them a
lot beforehand and that really helped! The test used to last __________minutes, but it
changed a bit. For the first __________ minutes of the test he gave me __________ and I
had to just drive around and then the last __________ minutes was for __________ the
manoeuvres, so the test is __________ minutes in total.

OLIVIA: OK, great, I’ll remember that! Do you have any more advice?

ZACH: It’s really good to practise driving a lot __________ of driving lessons as well.
Whenever my parents were running errands on the weekends I would offer to drive them.
My driving teacher also told me to buy a __________ to write down everything that I’ve
learnt in it like a __________.

OLIVIA: Haha, that sounds boring, but I’ll do it if it helps.

ZACH: I found it really useful! Before my test I read through everything I had written
down and it __________ me of a lot of things that I had forgotten about! It’s really helpful
for the __________ test as well because there’s so much information to remember for it.

OLIVIA: That’s great, Zach! Thanks for your help!

ZACH: No problem, see you at school!

OLIVIA: Bye!

Q: 11-15

Good morning, everybody and welcome to Mount Rushmore! To start your visit I’m just
going to give you a brief account of the history of the __________ before letting you roam
about on your own. I won’t keep you long. OK?

Mount Rushmore is South Dakota’s top tourist __________ and features the __________
of four United States Presidents - George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore
Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. Each head is __________ metres tall, which is taller than
the heights of __________ people combined! The sculptor initially wanted to depict the
presidents from head to waist, but due to a lack of __________ the construction had to
stop before this vision could be realised. In total it cost the government $__________
__________ to sculpt the heads at Mount Rushmore.

Before the construction of the presidents’ heads, the mountain was just bare rock and
forest attracting only a few hikers a year. The new carving at Mount Rushmore has
become an __________ symbol of presidential greatness and has appeared in works of
fiction and other popular works. The sculpture has also worked perfectly as a way to
develop __________, which was its intended purpose, and now attracts over __________
__________people a year.
The original plan was to carve the Presidents’ faces into the granite pillars known as ‘The
Needles’, however the sculptor soon realised that these rocks were too __________ and
delicate to support such a large sculpture. Instead he chose to locate the carving at Mount
Rushmore due to its __________ appearance and brightly lit rock faces that experience
maximum __________ to sunlight throughout the day as a result of the south-east
__________. Upon seeing Mount Rushmore, the sculptor declared ‘America will march
along that skyline.’

The name Mount Rushmore also has an interesting history. The __________ was
originally known as the Six Grandfathers, however, during an expedition in 1885 the
mountain was renamed after Charles E. Rushmore, a prominent New York lawyer who
joked that his annual treks to the mountain had earned him the right to have it named after
him. __________ years after the mountain was renamed, Charles E. Rushmore donated
$__________towards the sculpting of the president’s heads -the largest single
contribution. In 1927 the construction work started and __________ years later was
complete with no fatalities.

So that’s the history for you. If you’d like any more information, please feel free to ask me
questions, or you can soak up the information from our fantastic guidebook.

Q: 16-20

Now I’m going to give you a plan of the site and I’d just like to point out where everything
is so that you can explore everything for yourself. We’re currently standing at the entrance,
which is marked with the arrow on the map. If you follow the trail up to our __________,
you will find the information centre. There’s a great photo booth there where you can have
your photograph taken with Mount Rushmore in the background for a fee of only
$__________ - what a great souvenir! __________ __________ __________ us is the
refreshment centre where you can help yourselves to __________, locally grown tea and a
delicious selection of cold drinks and __________. Be sure to stay hydrated as it can get
really hot up here! To our __________not far up the trail is the gift shop. Here we sell
__________ of the guidebook and it’s also the perfect place to pick up some small
souvenirs for yourself, your family and friends. Now further up the trail __________ the
gift shop is a big stone building with a workshop. This is where all of our souvenirs are
made by hand, which you can purchase in the gift shop like I said before. Some are even
carved from pieces of rock taken from Mount Rushmore itself! If you carry on walking up
the trail __________ the workshop you’ll find our state-of-the-art visitor centre where you
can find maps of the walking trails here at Mount Rushmore. Now for the real treat! After
you have walked past the visitor centre, you can follow the trail up to the __________,
which will take you to our __________ shelter. From here you will have the best view of
Mount Rushmore there is an __________ not to be forgotten!

Right, if anyone wants a guided tour then I’m starting at the information centre. If you’d
like to follow me, this way, please.

Q : 21- 25

CHARLOTTE: Excuse me, Dr Twain. May I speak with you for a minute?

DR TWAIN: Of course, please come in.

CHARLOTTE: I’m Charlotte York. I’m considering taking your course in Tourism.

DR TWAIN: Right. Well, Charlotte, how can I help you?

CHARLOTTE: I have been considering studying Tourism, however, it is such an

important decision that I would like to seek some advice about it first. Would you mind
answering some of my questions?

DR TWAIN: Absolutely, fire away!

CHARLOTTE: Well I have been discussing courses with my parents and they are
concerned that I will not be able to get a __________job with a degree in Tourism. The
reason that I want to study the course is that I have a great __________ in the subject and I
think I would really enjoy it. I believe the only way that I will enjoy my life is if I enjoy
my career. Happiness is far more __________ than money, don’t you think?

DR TWAIN: Absolutely. I would much rather be happy and poor rather than rich and
____________________. Money cannot buy you happiness.

CHARLOTTE: I’m glad you agree.

DR TWAIN: You needn’t worry about money, Charlotte. A large part of the Tourism
course is dedicated to teaching students how to manage __________ a skill that you can
apply to your everyday life as well. I would also recommend that you take a sideline
course in __________ __________, as this can be incredibly useful in efficiently planning
your workload. Efficiency is the key to success!

CHARLOTTE: I’ll remember that.

DR TWAIN: Now I have found that some students have natural talents that really help
them to succeed in the course. __________ skills, for example, can be very beneficial. Do
you have any strengths?

CHARLOTTE: __________ was always my favourite subject at school so I really enjoy

solving __________problems, however, I find __________ quite difficult. I have always
been very capable and __________. I have a lot of confidence in my abilities and will take
the initiative in situations without needing to depend on anyone else for their __________.

DR TWAIN: That’s a really great quality to have and will be particularly useful if you
choose to study Tourism.

CHARLOTTE: That’s great.

DR TWAIN: I would recommend that you spend some of your time researching the
course. A lot of people who are uneducated on the subject claim that Tourism is a
__________ industry and that it will become __________ in the future. If you study the
published research however, you will see that the truth is quite the __________. The
industry has, in fact, __________ significantly as people have __________ an
ever-increasing interest in culture and travel. Have you compared the university course
with a polytechnic?

CHARLOTTE: Yes, I have. I was interested in studying the course in modules. However,
the university doesn’t offer that option. I don’t have enough __________ to be able to
attend an expensive university, so I was relieved to see that the course is quite
__________. I also considered attending a summer school instead of the university to save
money and so that I could work during the rest of the year, but I really wanted the
university experience.
DR TWAIN: I think that university would suit you well.

Q: 26-30

DR TWAIN: Now, what about the courses? Are you interested in any of the

other subjects on offer?

MELANI E: I have looked at a few. I was interested in Travel and Business as it sounds
similar to __________.

DR TWAIN: That is really worth learning, however, be aware that it is __________ and
will __________ a lot of your __________.

MELANIE: OK, that’s good to know.

DR TWAIN: You might find that Japanese is an interesting course and it will teach you
valuable skills in speaking the language. Personally, it’s not __________ and could be of
some __________, but __________ that much.

MELANIE: OK, Japanese, got that...What about Medical Care?

DR TWAIN: Well, if you have time, the course will teach you a lot about curing
__________ and illnesses, or dealing with __________ outside, although it’s __________
essential.

CHARLOTTE: So, OK, if it’s useful, I’ll take it.

Exercise 4

DR TWAIN: If you __________ using technology and are worried about fulfilling the
__________ requirements, computing is very relaxed about the skills that applicants must
__________.

CHARLOTTE: I’m terrible with computers so I’m __________ __________ that I would
enjoy that course. How about Public Relations?

DR TWAIN: Yes, I would recommend that course. It would be __________ to enter the
Tourism industry as it will educate you on how to __________ clients and develop
__________ with them.

CHARLOTTE: That’s great! Thank you so much for your help!

Q : 31-35

Welcome class to your very first lecture in this series on Business in the Modern World
conducted by myself, Dr Toby Bennett. Today we will be looking into the practice of
company outsourcing, using TCP Technologies as a case study. Now, for those of you who
are unfamiliar with this practice, I will give you a summative definition: company
outsourcing involves the __________ of various business activities by one company to
another. This practice will sometimes occur from a __________ company to a party based
in a third-world country, the rationale being to make significant financial savings on lower
__________ labour rates and to potentially increase __________.

Now, our case study for today is TCP Technologies - a party located in __________ that
receives outsourced tasks from Western companies. The manager of TCP Technologies is
a man called Manjeet Khanna who has personally developed a series of aims and
philosophies by which the company is expected to operate. He claims that the most
important of these philosophies is to create a workplace where each individual member
has the opportunity to __________ their __________ to the operations of the company.
That is to say that he found it important to develop a __________ environment.

As a means of ensuring quality from every individual at TCP Technologies, a grading

system has been developed that encourages an ethos of hard work and recognises
__________. This grading of individuals is based upon a series of factors such as turnover,
hours worked and __________. Every month Khanna publishes the grades on an
__________ __________ where staff can access not only their own grades, but also
compare it to others. A spirit of playful __________ has developed through this method,
which has resulted in increased efficiency and turnover across the company.

Khanna also saw it as essential to develop a __________ diverse group of employees as a

means of presenting a multi-faceted image that would appeal to a host of potential
employees from across the globe. This cultural openness has not only increased the
quantity of incoming contracted opportunities by __________%, but has also benefited the
company itself significantly. A level of __________ now exists that had not before been
apparent. According to __________ carried out recently, these newly introduced measures
have significantly increased the rate of staff __________, which has subsequently led to an
increase of 32% in the company’s income.

These figures are truly admirable and serve as a testament to the measures that Khanna has
introduced to the workplace at TCP Technologies. In a recent interview published by the
Economist, he declared, ‘The figures __________ for themselves - my system works!’
When asked if he had any advice for companies on methods they could employ to
streamline workflow and increase __________, he replied, “It’s simple, really. A company
must see itself not as one entity comprised of nameless components, but instead as a
__________ organism composed of cells, each one essential to the functioning of the
whole. I suggest that the motto by which your management operates will be ‘__________
first’.”

Q: 35-40

Many benefits have been reaped from the aforementioned changes in management style,
such as a significant __________ in staff turnover. This improvement alone has
__________ many problems that had before stunted the growth of the company. A lot of
these improvements came from the realisation that the __________ does not have to be
produced __________, but can come from any other company. The grading system also
immeasurably enhanced the dynamics of the company. The fact that this measuring system
is solely produced for__________members and inaccessible by __________ means that it
cannot be used as a judging criterion for __________. It has proven itself a relaxed and
informal means of stimulating workflow.

When asked about specific features of his managing style, Khanna mentioned that it is
important for him to respond personally to any complaints filed by staff members. Having
found the existing complaints process __________ and__________, he introduced a new
online system that created a direct line of __________ between Khanna and all employees
of the company. The complaint form, dubbed by Khanna as a __________, eradicates the
middleman, is easily accessible to all employees online and has an interface that can be
instinctively __________. Any staff-related complaint, such as those relating to air
conditioning and food quality, can be submitted directly to Khanna via this online system.
Entitlement to__________is also a popular issue discussed through this forum. The main
benefit of using this system is that staff must include their __________ __________ on the
ticket before they are able to submit it. In the past, anonymous complaints had been at the
root of much confusion and caused many wasted work hours, so the new system has put a
__________ on this form of complaint.

That wraps up the lecture for today. Please remember that attendance is mandatory... (fade
out)

TEST 4

Exercise 1

Q: 1-4

Manager: Hi there, welcome to the Job Centre. How can I help?

Lauren: Good morning, I’m here to enquire as to whether you have any jobs available at the
moment.

Manager: Yes, we have several available. What kind of job is it that you’re looking for?

Lauren: Well, um, I’ll take any __________ jobs I can get. I’m really strapped for
__________ at the moment.

Manager: Okay, bear with me while I browse our system. [Pause] Here we are. We have
three __________ at the moment, all involving quite different roles.

Lauren: That sounds promising. What are they?

Manager: The first one is for a post as a __________. It says here that experience in
reception or general __________ is preferred, but not essential. Have you worked on a
reception desk previously?

Lauren: No, I haven’t. I had a baby quite young, and so I have very little work experience.
Could you tell me a few more details?

Manager: Yes, of course. The job will be to mainly provide quality __________ service
both over the __________ and in person. When customers are waiting you will be expected
to provide them with __________ and ensure they have a first-rate experience.

Lauren: I think I could manage that, and I’m a very friendly person!

Manager: That’s great.

Lauren: Do you have any information about the hours involved?

Manager: It says here that you will be expected to work several early __________,
__________ days a week.

Lauren: Any other requirements?

Manager: Yeah, you’ll have to go through a couple of weeks of __________ __________

before qualifying for the post.

Q: 5-10

Lauren: Hmm, I don’t know if I would be able to fully commit to that. Did you say it’s 4
days per week?

Manager: Yeah, it says here 4 days a week, with another day off per week when requested
in advance. It also explicitly states that at least one of your working days must fall on a
weekend.

Lauren: I’ll have to think about that and talk to my babysitter.

Lauren: Are there any other roles beginning later in the day?

Manager: Yes, there’s an advertisement here for a driver. It says you’ll need a clean and
valid UK driver’s license, with absolutely no exception.

Lauren: No problems there. I passed my test for the first time and have never received any
points.

Manager: It also explicitly states that you must be over __________and have been driving
for at least __________years.

Lauren: That sounds quite exciting. Is there any more information?

Manager: Yep, it says here that working hours are flexible, and the employers are happy to
work within your personal schedule since they employ multiple drivers.

Lauren: That’s great.

Manager: The employers ask for a commitment to either __________ 5 days per week,
__________5 days per week, or three full __________ days per week.

Lauren: I’m sure I can handle all that without a problem.

Manager: As well as driving the employers to and from work, they will ask you to perform
various __________on their behalf, such as collecting the __________ __________, and
picking their children up from school.

Lauren: Do they need me to work a day on the weekend as well?

Manager: No, it says here that they only require you to work on __________, not
__________.

Lauren: That sounds interesting.

Manager: Okay, there’s only one more left, another customer service-related __________.
It looks like it requires you to work __________ hours, quite __________ at __________, so
it might not be suitable for you. Do you want to hear about it anyway?

Lauren: Yeah, can’t do any harm.

Manager: Okay, so it’s a post for a __________ in a __________ in the __________ of

town. I’m sure you’ve been to the cinema a few times, so you can guess what kind of role it
would be. They’re quite short and late __________, between 17.30 and 22.30 most nights,
with slightly longer shifts on __________ and Saturday nights.

Lauren: Mmm, can you tell me what the job involves?

Manager: Yes, sure. It says that you’ll be required to sell and dispense tickets, and provide
refreshments. Also, they ask that you be quick on the computers since you’ll also need to take
__________ over the phone, but you’ll receive basic training for that.

Lauren: Do they need me to work weekdays as well?

Manager: Well, it says here that if you request at least a fortnight in advance, they will grant
you a day off on __________, but __________ on a weekend.

Lauren: Mmm. I’ll think it over and let you know later. Thanks for all your help.

Exercise 2

Q: 11-14

Thank you all for coming to my talk this evening. It’s nice to see so many people in the
audience. For those of you who don’t know very much about ‘Connection’, let me start by
giving you some background information about it.

‘Connection’ is a __________ organisation that facilitates __________ all over the globe.
This organisation __________ itself on matching __________ of thousands of host families
with guests every single year, allowing travellers to discover a country’s __________ in a
way like no other. Homestays are ideal for both travellers and homeowners, enabling
inter-cultural exchanges and the development of life-long __________, while providing
travellers with often discounted __________ costs, and host families with a steady
__________ from the comfort of their own homes. The homestay experience is particularly
popular with university exchange students looking for a more genuine __________ into their
country of choice, and an __________ opportunity to develop their language skills. The
homestay experience is truly unique and a once-in-a-lifetime, and one that you will likely
remember for the rest of your lives. It is important to note, however, that some people will
find it __________ to __________ to the new country, with many enduring what is known as
‘culture shock’. Connection’s advice for those suffering from culture shock, is to go out and
make as many friends as possible, No matter how difficult you may find it. Friends are
guaranteed to help you feel more __________ as part of the local society, and show you some
great places to hang out. At first, it might seem extremely challenging to overcome the
__________ __________ between you and your host family; however, you will find that you
quickly overcome this and develop a very close and almost familial relationship. Many of our
travellers have suggested that they have found discussing their __________ and other
__________ with their host families is the best way to overcome any barriers, since you are
more than likely to find something you __________in common. For example, you might find
that you are both passionate about football, and end up playing in the local field every week.
One of our guests undertaking a homestay in a rural area of the UK told us that she and her
host now take a Tai Chi class together upon a hilltop at sunrise, calling the experience
‘absolutely breathtaking’. After the first few weeks, you will find your __________ of the
people around you and their culture __________ by leaps and bounds, and you will soon
become one of the locals. Our hosts, in over __________ countries, turn a location into a
culture, time into experience and strangers into friends.

Q: 15-20

So how can you find out about applying for a homestay? The best way would be to visit
Connection’s website, www.__________.com, and contact one of their friendly __________
for more information. Once you have confirmed your interest in the service, we would
strongly advise that you remain in close contact with the __________ __________, which
will send you several __________ keeping you up-to-date with potential __________ in your
country of choice. Once registered, Connection will require you to send various documents,
and will act as an intermediary between you and the host family prior to final __________
and __________. During this stage, Connection will ask you to provide __________
__________, one for the host family, and the other for our own __________. Please ensure
that you sign the back of each photo. Due to the nature of the service Connection provides,
__________ is an absolute must, and they will ask you to send in photocopies of your
__________, birth certificate, and a bank statement as confirmation of your __________. On
receipt of these documents, the official process will begin and your bank account will be
debited for the initial __________ of £__________. If you haven’t received any __________
confirming receipt of these documents from us within __________ working days, please
contact the main office. As I mentioned before, due to the nature of the organisation,
Connection operates a meticulous screening process, and all applicants will undergo an
__________in our head office in London, with exceptions made in extreme circumstances.
After your interview, it may take us several weeks to carry out the __________ process, so
please be patient with us. If you would like a __________service, please indicate this on your
application and we will notify you of the additional charges. Finally, once we have come to a
result about your application, you will receive a decision in the post. If you do not receive an
offer of placement, we will refund your deposit within 7 working days.
Exercise 3

Q: 21 – 26

Professor: For next week, I’d like you to undertake a piece of research in preparation for
writing your final essay. In order to gain top marks, you must include a range of primary,
secondary, and tertiary sources. Are there any questions?

Douglas: Yes, Professor, I have a question. We haven’t yet covered how to undertake this
sort of research in much depth, and I’m a little unsure of what you want us to do. In telling us
to include __________ sources, do you mean you want us to design and distribute a
__________, analysing the results?

Professor: You could design a questionnaire, but you’ll soon find that distributing a
questionnaire on such a __________ scale is somewhat __________. We couldn’t possibly
expect you to do it effectively as an individual university student without the necessary
resources. No, ideally I would like you to form one or two focus groups and __________
them. This will provide you with a more __________ approach. If your strengths lie in
__________, please by all means take a more __________ approach, but this will be more
__________ and time-consuming, and isn’t entirely necessary for the purpose of this study.

Jane: Professor, you haven’t told us what our project is about. Do we get to choose our own
topic based on the previous study?

Professor: No, I’m afraid not. This will be a strictly __________ study; however, you can
choose which angle you’d like to take, so long as it remains within the realm of anthropology.
Does anyone have any questions specifically about the formation of the focus groups? I’ve
had several emails about this, and I’d like to address it now.

Douglas: My study is related to growing up in Australia, and the question of nature versus
nurture. I’ve gathered more than __________school children who would be happy to
participate in a focus group. Do you think we’ll need to include that many participants in a
focus group?

Professor: Blimey, Douglas, well done for finding that many willing children, but you
definitely don’t need that many for the study you’re going to undertake. I’d say you need no
more than __________ children per group, and no more than __________groups, so
__________ children altogether. You definitely need to control the group size in order to
__________ a meaningful dialogue.

Douglas: OK, if it’s useful, I’ll try and do it...

Professor: I appreciate your enthusiasm for the project, but there are plenty of different
ways to gather data, and I’m sure that if you look hard enough, you’ll find someone who has
conducted almost the exact same research in the past. My advice for you is don’t be too
__________, and try to include as much __________ about __________ people or sectors.

Jane: For those who haven’t ever collected original data before, what do you suggest we
do?

Professor: I would suggest that you read __________ from other people who have
undertaken such research to see what advice they can give. I would also encourage you to
read Chapter Eight in the course __________, which should give you a good introduction to
collecting data. Moreover, you should try to __________ using the __________ table
provided in your course __________. By now you should have read at least __________ or
__________books giving quite detailed instructions on how to go about collecting data.

Douglas: Professor, I don’t know about everyone else, but I m having trouble reading the
books. I had a really big __________ for another course and I’ve been __________ all my
time on that. Jane, have you read all the books the professor mentioned?

Jane: Well, my trouble is getting hold of the books. I’ve been to the library several times,
but all the books are out.

Professor: Sounds like you should have started borrowing books a bit earlier.

Jane: Yes, I should have. But I got several from my friend a couple of days ago. I just
__________ through them and don’t remember a lot of the information.

Q: 27-30

Jane: But now let’s look at these things. We’ll need to start thinking about which ones we’ll
definitely want to do for the project.

Douglas: Okay. The first one here is the final report.

Jane: If you like, we can work __________ on the research and data-collection side of the
project, and do the final write-up.

Douglas: Cool. That sounds good. I’m not sure how much I’d be able to contribute
considering I haven’t had a chance to read the course material. But I should be able to
__________ some __________ and a list of __________ that can be used during the focus
group sessions.

Jane: That sounds appropriate. I think so too.

Douglas: Do you think we’ll need to write a letter to send to the participants, telling them
the __________ and __________for the interviews?

Jane: Positive. I can take care of that.

Douglas: Well, that’s great.

Jane: I should also include a document for them to sign saying that they’re happy to be
__________.

Douglas: Oh yes, of course. I forgot about the __________. That’ll likely be a big job, so
let’s do __________ __________, I’ll do one of the groups and you can do the other. Okay?

Jane: Sounds like a plan!

Exercise 4

Q: 31-36

Good morning everyone! Today I’m going to talk about the graphical symbol. A graphic
symbol is a __________symbol that is used to represent __________, such as those used in
the __________ alphabet. The term ‘graphic symbol’ encompasses anything from the
logographs used in Egyptian hieroglyphic writing, to ancient Chinese pictograms. Early
symbols were based on pictographs and ideograms before they were developed into
logographic writing systems. These systems are still in use in some __________cultures in
Africa, the Americas, and Oceania. Indeed, elements of pictograph are still found in modern
Chinese characters, and it is often an interesting exercise to trace the origins of some Chinese
characters. Pictographs remain in common __________ use today as signs, __________, or
statistical diagrams. Road signs and public toilet signs, and even flat-pack assembly
instructions utilising pictures are considered pictographic.

Ancient graphic writing systems provide researchers with a __________ of __________

about past civilisations. In 1799, one of the most important historical discoveries was made
by accident when members of Napoleon’s expedition to Egypt found a stone in Rosetta that
exhibited three different scripts. The stone, now known as the Rosetta Stone, was studied in
significant depth by __________, and was first deciphered by Frenchman Jean-François
Champollion in 1822. He was able to correctly determine the phonetic values of the symbols,
and later research has confirmed his findings. In many of these symbols, __________ are
used to portray a multitude of __________, and knowledge and understanding of these lines
holds the key to the comprehension of graphic writing systems.

A key moment in the history of communication was the invention of the camera obscura, or
the camera. Although the concept can be traced back to the __________ century B.C.
Chinese philosopher Mo Ti, the first photographic image was ultimately created in
__________ by Joseph Nicephore Niepce.__________, as it was later known, enables
researchers to piece together and better understand history. Today, photography __________
a huge part of everyday life and most publications contain a vast number of __________.
Photography is used in __________, and is now becoming a way to increase awareness of
existing world issues. For example, animal __________ charities are increasingly using
photography to __________ animals that are at high risk of endangerment. Charity workers
are sometimes flown to __________locations to document the suffering endured by high-risk
animals in an attempt to raise human __________ of their consumption activities, and how
they impact others. One recent high-profile campaign was undertaken by attaching a camera
to the __________ of a bird, in order to obtain photographs of the animals in their
__________ habitats, and understand how often they come into contact with human
__________ A soon-to-be-released documentary about the suffering of animals on Midway
Island shows the full extent to which human consumption is harming animals thousands of
miles away from us.

Q: 37 -40

As photography continues to progress, with the use of drones now becoming somewhat
__________, we should expect more and more __________ to be included in the future,
expanding the __________ of photography ever further. Indeed, the downward pressure on
__________ media prices means that media companies are being forced to get __________
on how to make a __________. Many have found that the answer to this lies in advertising,
and companies are now willing to devote a large __________ of their budgets to advertising
in __________. By the same token, marketing has become an __________ part of a
company’s business model, often meaning the __________ or __________ of a company. As
a result, much time and money have been pumped into the development of effective
__________, with attractive __________ playing a large role in this. However, many
governments are now seen to be cracking down on marketing and packaging in an attempt to
protect consumers from being misled. In particular, tobacco companies are now subject to
ever-increasing regulation. For example, in the United Kingdom, legislation is soon to pass
preventing any form of branding or differentiation on cigarette packaging in efforts to curb
the harmful effects of smoking.

Finally, one must not forget the fundamental role that graphic writing systems have had to
play in __________. __________, __________, and __________ often form the very basis of
these branches of academia. Indeed, one needs to look no further than chemistry’s periodic
table to see a perfect example of graphic writing systems in use today.

Q: 11-16

PRESENTER: Good morning, listeners! And welcome back to Star Radio!

Today on the show we have a visitor from Yazoo Car Rental who is going to give us an
insight into his company and into the public transport system! Welcome, Jonathan!

JONATHAN: Thank you for having me. Yes, I would like to start by introducing my
company Yazoo Car Rental. We are the __________ and most __________ rental company in
the city and have won multiple __________ for the quality of our services. This success did
not come easily, however, and it proved important that we stay fresh and are always thinking
of ways to attract new customers. Our first attempt to do this was to offer a free gift with
every car rental, which we were confident the customers would be very interested in. The
offer of a free __________ with each rental, however, did not __________ any __________
customers so we quite quickly stopped offering it.

In 2002, a new taxi company opened next door to us and we started losing a lot of
__________ to them, so we introduced an offer that we hoped might compete with their
service. We offered a new __________ where you could __________ a car with a
__________ for a ________ extra fee. By introducing this offer, we found that all of our
customers preferred to drive the cars __________, so again this offer was __________ in
attracting more customers.

Learning from these mistakes, we decided to offer a package service where the customer
__________had to come to our offices to __________the rental car. Instead, we could
__________and pick up the car anywhere in the city to make the customer’s experience a lot
more stress-free. This offer was very __________ and increased our profits by __________.

In order to attract a younger demographic, we updated the models of cars that we offered for
rental. We began offering more __________ cars such as minis and __________ cars that we
thought might appeal to the younger crowd and we also purchased them in more fun colours
like reds and greens. This offer attracted some __________ customers of a __________ age
group, however not as many as we hoped.

Next I decided to offer our services at a discounted price on our website where it could be
seen by __________ of people. I thought that this could be a __________ way to attract a
number of new customers who would never have heard of us before and it worked
__________ well. Following the success of the discount offer, we had so many customers
that it became __________ to open a new branch of the company in the __________ of the
city. The __________ of renting offices in the city centre was very __________, so we hoped
that our profits would justify this expensive decision. We made enough profit to keep our city
centre offices open, but we had hoped for a __________ increase in customer numbers.

Q: 17 -20

JONATHAN: Now for the second part of my talk, which is on the topic of public transport.
There are many benefits to public transport, for example, the recent introduction of bus lanes
has meant that buses are now __________ by traffic jams and are able to stay on
__________. Unfortunately, as fewer and fewer people are taking the bus nowadays, the
service has become quite __________. This reduction in passengers may be due to the stories
in the newspaper about the dangers posed to __________ safety by the buses, however, this is
largely __________ as buses are responsible for far __________ pedestrian-related accidents
than __________. I use the bus service often, as car petrol is so expensive nowadays that the
bus is far more __________. However, if I am in a __________ I prefer to take a __________
as they tend to get you to your destination very __________ so you can remain __________
for your appointments. I also very much enjoy flying to my destinations, as the service is
__________ fast and the airports are always very easy to find. Personally, my favourite mode
of transportation is the bus. Due to the lack of people using the service, I have found that the
buses are never __________ so there is always a seat __________. They are also never
__________ as they get cleaned regularly. However, I have found that sometimes the bus can
be over a __________ __________ behind schedule which can be very frustrating. There has
been a lot of fluctuation in the price of bus tickets in the last couple of years. In the past,
£__________for a ticket was enough to sustain the bus companies, however, as the price of
fuel increased so did the ticket prices. Now the ticket prices are __________ as the bus
companies try to encourage more people to use their service again.

Well, that’s all from me today. Thank you for listening.

Exercise 3

Q: 21-25

ALEXANDRA: Excuse me, Dr Thompson. May I speak to you for a minute?

MR THOMPSON: Of course. Please come in.

ALEXANDRA: I’m Alexandra Jones. I’m studying __________ here at the university
and for my assignment I have to carry out a survey of people who own their own
organisations. I heard that you are the founder of your own company, and I was wondering if
I could ask you some questions about it.

MR THOMPSON: Yes, of course, please fire away.

ALEXANDRA: OK great, we’ll get started! Did you __________ any problems whilst you
were starting your company?

MR THOMPSON: Actually, it was not as __________ as I anticipated. I started out with very
__________ objectives, so I knew exactly what I wanted my __________ __________ to be.
It was very difficult to find the correct premises as the property market in London is so
__________ but eventually, I found the perfect site. The hardest part was __________ the
business, as I had no __________ __________ so I had to create it myself.

ALEXANDRA: Yes, that is very impressive. Was it difficult dealing with staff?

MR THOMPSON: It’s always __________ trying to satisfy a group of people with varying
interests, however, I didn’t encounter many problems. I found it very __________ to make
the staff feel __________, so I hosted a staff day where we could all introduce ourselves and
get to know each other as individuals. I was also able to talk to them about the type of work
that they would be doing and gave them the __________ to share with me the __________
they had with the __________ of the work.

ALEXANDRA: OK. Did you hire a management team, or did you take on the role of a
manager?

MR THOMPSON: Oh no, I already had enough tasks to take care of. I employed someone
else to take on the role of the manager, however, he never __________ me before making
decisions, so I was __________ to let him go and hire someone else.

ALEXANDRA: And what did the other staff think of the new manager?

MR THOMPSON: They had a great deal of __________ for him. It definitely helped that I
consulted with them before hiring him. They were surprised that he has been so __________
in his role at the company, despite the longer meeting hours.

ALEXANDRA: Since the company opened, has it had any great __________?

MR THOMSON: There are many aspects of the company that I am pleased with,
however, there is one achievement of which I am particularly proud. I wanted a __________
__________ to brighten up our entrance area, so I decided it would be a great idea to invite
the __________ __________ __________ to create one for us. The youngsters had a great
time and I know they were thrilled to be included.

ALEXANDRA: Oh, that’s lovely.

Q: 26 – 30

ALEXANDRA: Have you encountered any major problems since you opened the
company?

MR THOMPSON: Yes, we are always encountering issues with __________ because it is

very hard to find people who are __________ for the roles that we were offering, but
unfortunately there is no __________ to this. One of our __________ also recently left to go
on __________ leave, which put us in a tricky situation, however, we have managed to find a
__________ replacement for her. It’s also now approaching the period when we must carry
out our __________ training so I need to find a venue with enough space to hold everyone. It
will be interesting trying to organise that event!

ALEXANDRA: Oh gosh, I can imagine. I find it hard enough to organise myself!

MR THOMPSON: Organisation is a difficult thing to __________, but it is also essential for

success! Whilst I was learning how to stay organised, I realised that the __________ of
__________ is essential.

ALEXANDRA: OK, that’s great!

MR THOMPSON: I also suggest that you visit the library, as there is a section on
__________ that will have some very __________ material on how to __________ your
organisation skills.

ALEXANDRA: OK, I’ll head to the library when we’re finished.

MR THOMPSON: I think you will find it very useful. They also have a collection of
__________ on the subject of personal organisation and I suggest that you look up the
__________ on __________ of __________. I personally found these sources incredibly
useful. __________ are also a valuable resource and we have a whole collection of them in
our university library. I advise that you look at Section 2 where you will find articles on the
__________of __________.

ALEXANDRA: That’s great, thank you so much for your help.

MR THOMPSON: No problem.

Exercise 4

Q: 31-34

Welcome class to your very first lecture in this series on __________ conducted by myself,
Dr Torben Dahl. Today we will be looking into the relationship between __________ and
__________, where I will be giving you a critical overview of the main climate influences
that shape the design of buildings. Throughout this lecture series, we will be looking at the
latest research into climatic design carried out by __________ in the field in addition to case
studies and __________ drawn from __________ practice both in __________ and
__________ __________.

Now, __________ __________ is one of the climatic elements with the most devastating
effects on our architecture. The chemicals in acid rain can cause paint to peel, __________of
steel structures such as bridges, and __________ of stone statues. Since the 1970s, our
government has been making great effort to reduce the __________ of these chemicals into
the atmosphere with positive results. Private organisations have also been raising
__________ and __________ and recently received a huge __________ from the
__________. It is interesting to look at the studies that have been carried out into the effects
of acid rain at varying __________. Research has shown that there are lower levels of acid in
the damaging __________ at higher altitudes, meaning that __________ are much less
__________ to the negative effects as they are exposed to acid rain with far lower levels of
damaging pollutants.

Recently, the Alter Project was founded to carry out further research into acid rain. This
project is directed towards studying the effects of acid rain on old, traditional buildings of
__________ construction that are vulnerable to damage caused by acid rain. Masonry is
particularly vulnerable as it is easily corroded and weakened by the acidic chemicals. It is
imperative that we protect these buildings, as they are valuable examples of our __________
and culture.

Q: 35-40

Pollution is one of the main sources of concern in the present day. The construction industry
contributes considerably as a source of __________ in its day-to-day processes of creating
building materials such as __________ and __________, however, more new __________
methods are being developed to counter this. A recent case study for this is Sky Tower, whose
windows have been made from __________ __________ to prevent pollution from the
glass-making process.

__________ is the most problemat__________ element to be considered in construction. It is

__________ that construction elements such as the insulation are fitted into the building in
__________ weather to prevent it from getting __________. This makes winter an
__________ season for construction as the heavy __________ can have __________ effects
on the __________. Another climate type that has an enormous affect on buildings is
__________. Constructions made of steel and stone are largely unaffected by humidity,
however, it can have a serious effect on __________ constructions if the timber has not been
correctly treated. __________ from the air can condense in the __________ of the wood,
which then swells and shrinks in proportion to the magnitude of change in its moisture
content. This __________ in size can have disastrous consequences.

In areas of the world that are prone to earthquakes, certain design and environmental
conditions are preferable for protecting buildings in the event of a tremor. Engineers have
come up with numerous building procedures to help minimise shaking in buildings. For
example, tall buildings have height __________s and counterweights and
__________buildings have reinforced floors and walls. Ground conditions are a __________
for worry in many constructions as often the __________ is of the wrong density to protect
the __________.

Luckily __________ has now been developed that can help to minimise damage by
earthquakes. Seismic sensors can give prior warning when an earthquake is about to happen
so that preparations can be made to protect both the people and the buildings from harm. The
__________ of building structures can now also be measured and __________ over time by
architects. It has been expressed by architects within the design community that it would be
valuable to be given special courses for designing buildings within earthquake zones.
__________ are also expected to be produced by the government in the near future that will
give architects a __________ checklist to follow.

That wraps up the lecture for today. Please remember that attendance is mandatory... [fade

CLIENT: Nope.. .Thank you for your help.

AGENT : No problem. See you on Friday. Bye!

Exercise 2

Q: 11-15

Good morning everybody and welcome to the Australian Wild Zoo. I would like to start by
introducing you to the new features that we have added to our zoo in the recent __________ .
Being the __________ zoo in the area, we receive thousands of visitors a year. We found that
this huge __________ was too demanding for the __________ that we were able to provide,
and so we decided to expand ourselves in order to give every visitor a brilliant and exciting
experience. We initially intended to build a new __________ area, however, we felt that the
zoo should __________ only to __________ animals. During our previous renovation, we
expanded the __________ __________ and so we felt that this time the zoo would benefit
most from introducing a new __________ of __________ , so visitors can now see a whole
range of new additions at the Australian Wild Zoo, including __________ and __________ .

With this huge improvement to our facilities, we also found it necessary to change our
__________ regulations, which we put into action in June. We now allow visitors access to
the zoo during __________ and, as some of our newly added animals are __________ ,
guests may also now visit the animals __________ __________ __________ .
Unfortunately, some visitors had started __________ the animals during these late night
viewing times, which __________ their feeding pattern and as a result, we had to ban
__________ in the viewing areas.

One of our most exciting additions to the zoo is our native __________, who we have named
Frisbee. For a fee of just $__________, visitors can have their __________ taken with him
and have it __________ onto a selection of items such as keyrings and mugs. At first, visitors
were also allowed to feed Frisbee items that we provided, such as __________ and
__________, however, some guests started feeding him hamburgers and chips so we were
forced to __________ visitors from feeding him. As kangaroos are such calm animals,
Frisbee isn’t disturbed by the noises and shouting of visitors at the zoo, which has helped him
to settle in at his new home very quickly.

The pye-dog zone has been permanently closed throughout the __________ period to allow
the dogs to __________ as they would in their natural habitat. We were very excited to be
reopening the zone, however unfortunately we have been forced to close it temporarily as the
result of a __________ __________ which will take about __________ __________ to fix.
We were intending to renovate the zone with the other constructions that we were
undertaking, but unfortunately, we did not have sufficient funds. We understand that this
temporary closure may disappoint our visitors, and so we have decided to offer a __________
price on our tickets for the next week. If you ask at the reception desk, they will happily
direct you to the __________ __________ where you can purchase the ticket. The ticket will
also entitle you to a __________ discount off any item in our __________ __________
where we sell a range of items including postcards and fluffy toys.

Q: 16-20

Now we’re currently standing at the gate, which is marked with the arrow on the map. Now if
any of you need to visit the toilets before we get started, they’re __________ here to our
__________. Out to the __________, just across the __________, there is the bird hide where
we have over one hundred species of birds for you to watch. We even have an interactive
zone where you can feed them with seeds and take photographs with our __________! What
a great souvenir to remember your trip! And up the path to the __________, if you look
__________ __________ __________ you know, there is the pye-dog zone. Although it is
closed, if any of the dogs are playing __________, you will be able to see them through the
__________. And then let’s pass by __________. This area is a sheltered part for Brolga
watchers who can use it to spy through __________. And after that, I suggest that you all
visit the rest area for some cold drinks and snacks as it is very hot outside. It is just at the
__________ __________ of the zoo. After that, you could cut across the path to the large
rectangular hut where you will be able to see our new addition of fierce lions. The mother has
just had cubs, so it is really quite a rare thing to see! And around to the west, for those of you
who want to visit Frisbee, our native kangaroo, he is in a __________ shaped __________
just up the path to the __________. Don’t forget to have your photo taken with him! Now, as
I mentioned before, you can purchase your discounted tickets at photoshop and this is also
where you will come to collect any photos you have taken at the zoo during your visit. The
photoshop is located at the __________ __________ of the zoo. Okay, ladies and gentlemen,
enjoy your visit.

Exercise 3

Q: 21-24

JONES: Hello, Mr Thompson. May I speak to you for a minute?

MR THOMPSON: Of course. Please come in.

JONES: I’m Alexandra Jones. I’m studying __________ here at the university and I
heard about the summer course that you offer every year. I was considering joining the course
and wanted to ask you some questions about it.

MR THOMPSON: Yes, of course, please fire away.

JONES: Has the course been effective in improving the environment?

MR THOMPSON: Yes, absolutely. We have seen great results. Last year we planted a small
field of trees and we have been measuring their __________ outputs to see the benefits that
they have provided to the environment. Since we were __________ __________ __________
last month, we are now able to hugely enhance our efforts. Our current goal is to introduce a
lot more __________ __________ to the plot so that we can establish a complex habitat and
compare the benefits of each species. In order to do this, we need to get a lot more
__________ involved in the project, so I am very pleased to hear about your interest.

JONES: Well, the project sounds fascinating. I would definitely like to be involved,

MR THOMPSON: Absolutely. Over the years we have received funding from __________
__________ and from selling __________, but the biggest improvement in our research came
from a __________ __________ that we received in the first year. This has greatly improved
the organisation and we have since won prizes for our research.

JONES: Wow, how impressive!

MR THOMPSON: Yes, it is of the utmost importance to our organisation that we find a way
to __________ the ____________________ __________ that has been done to the
environment by the __________ __________. This is no small undertaking, and our
resources still need management, but from reports taken of our studies we have found that
__________ and __________udents have greatly benefitted from field trips to the tree
plantation.

JONES: Yes, I visited the plantation myself on a field trip two years ago and I found
myself greatly impressed by it.

MR THOMPSON: We have received a lot of feedback from visiting groups telling us how
impressed teachers, researchers and students alike have been during their visits. Due to the
__________ facilities that we have carefully __________, I know that the visits are useful
and engaging for __________ and that their experience is particularly special.

Q : 25 – 26

JONES: So what is the particular focus of the organisation and the reports that it provides?

MR THOMPSON: I am personally very interested in __________ __________, so I knew

that I definitely wanted to focus some of the report on this area. Before I set up the
organisation, I looked up information on what areas were currently being researched and I
found that there were already studies into __________ __________ and __________
__________. I obviously wanted to find a unique area to research and so these were no good.
I was tempted to look into the background of __________, but the impacts of __________
__________are far more devastating and very little research has been carried out on this
subject, so I decided that this should also form some focus for the report.

JONES: Yes, that makes sense. What have you found to be the greatest benefits of the
activities carried out by the organisation?

Q: 27-28

MR THOMPSON: I have found that the greatest benefits are not the ones that anyone can
learn from a book, like how to collect data, but more importantly are __________
__________ that one can gain only from experience. Students who have partaken in the
__________ course have massively enhanced their __________, which will prove
__________ for the rest of their lifetime. The people who take part in the summer course
already know the importance of __________ __________, so it is not important that we
spend time teaching them this. Students instead benefit from learning the importance of
__________, as each day they have to wake up early to make sure that they are not late for
their practical experience sessions.

Q: 29-30

JONES: If I decide to attend the summer course, what will I be doing for the rest of the
time when no activities are going on?

MR THOMPSON: Well, we unfortunately don’t yet have a library on site, so you would be
unable to read reference books although you are obviously welcome to bring some books of
your own with you. We offer a range of __________ __________, such as __________ and
__________, for students to participate in outside of their classes so you could participate in
one of these activities. We do not offer __________ outside of the scheduled classes,
however, you are free to __________ __________ and ask them any questions you may have
about the research.

JONES: Well, the course sounds fantastic. I would definitely like to participate during the
summer. Thank you so much for your help.

MR THOMPSON: No problem at all, here is a form with all of the details. I look forward to
seeing you there.

Exercise 4

Q: 31-35

Good morning. In the last few lectures, I’ve been talking about the history of technology in
the modern world. But today I want to use Roberts as our case study, which is a company that
develops complex __________technology for a range of industries and disciplines. Since the
camera was invented in __________, it has changed and improved dramatically with cameras
now in __________ that can fit on the head of a pin. The company has been founded on a
series of principals by which the company operates in its day-to-day business, the most
important of these being to enhance the __________ development of camera technology.

Roberts has a __________ pioneering and innovation, having been responsible for the
invention of numerous technologies since it was founded by Dwayne Roberts in __________.
It has achieved many of its aims over the years, but its principal and founding aim persists
through time, which is to explore __________ __________ and imagine the unimaginable.

The cameras produced by Roberts have a multitude of __________ __________ that are
currently being explored. One of these is an __________camera that they aim to attach to a
space satellite from where it will record live, high-definition video and provide fascinating
new views of __________ __________. It could also prove useful in exploring other planets
by providing researchers with never before seen images of the __________Roberts are also
experimenting with attaching the cameras to small drones that will fly through the
__________ in search of plants that could be used to develop __________ __________. The
camera also has the potential to be used on the roads. As it is __________cheaper than the
speed cameras that are currently in operation, this means that more of them could be
distributed across the road network where they can control __________ by making sure that
all cars abide by the __________ __________.

Q: 36-40

Despite this diverse range of potential applications, the cameras are presently used for very
different, more __________ __________. Roberts’ cameras are presently used as
nanny-cams, which allow parents to watch their nannies to ensure that they are responsibly
attending to the children that they have been employed to care for. These cameras give
parents peace of mind and more __________ over their child’s welfare whilst they are at
work or otherwise occupied. The highest sales of the company are in __________ that have
the cameras hidden within them. This clever idea means that the cameras are camouflaged
from view and do not look out of place in the child’s __________. The toys are also very
robust, so children can play with them without damaging them in the process. The toys are
designed to look like __________ and come in a range of shapes, sizes and colours as well as
different animal species such as __________ and __________. These toys are incredibly
popular and can be bought in any toy store for only $__________. Always eager to be
constantly improving their products, Roberts is now working on a product that will change
the way people see __________. This new contraption is a __________ __________ that is
built into eyewear such as __________ and __________ where it can capture the world as
you see it. Holiday makers and tourists no longer have to carry a big, heavy camera around
with them on their travels! They can instead purchase a set of eyewear with the built-in
camera, which will capture the moment with a simple tap.
Roberts is also developing a model of this tiny camera for use during medical __________
and __________. The camera will be used during non-invasive keyhole surgeries to enable
the surgeon to see what they are doing inside the body without having to make a large
incision. This innovative application for the camera could make surgeries a lot __________
and the saved __________ and __________ will also make it far more __________. As the
patient will no longer have to undergo a large incision for their surgery, it also means that
their recovery will be much faster with a greatly reduced chance of post-op infection.

If any of you have an interest in working in this field of technological invention, Roberts is a
very diverse and fast-growing company that would be a fantastic internship opportunity.
Every year they organise a series of __________ where entrants stand the chance of winning
a place in their __________ternship __________ so I would suggest that all of you enter.

That wraps up the lecture for today. Please remember that attendance is mandatory... [fade
