CIE 120 – PRINCIPLES OF REINFORCED CONCRETE DESIGN

Lowest part of the structure is generally referred to as the FOUNDATION. Its function is to
transfer the load of the structure to the soil on which it is resting. A properly design foundation transfer
the load throughout the soil without overstressing the soil.
Overstressing the soil can result in either excessive settlement or shear failure of the soil, both
of which cause damage to the structure. Thus, geotechnical and structural engineers who design
foundations must evaluate the bearing capacity of soils.

A square column footing is to support a 500mm x 500mm square tied column that carries a
service dead load of 1200 kN and Service live load of 1120 kN. The column is reinforced with 8-25mm
diameter bars. The base of the footing is 1.50m below natural grade where allowable soil pressure is
310 kPa. The soill above the footing has a unit weight of 15.6 kN/m3. Assume fy=275MPa and
f;c=27.5MPa and unit weight of concrete is 23.5kN/m3. Design the footing. Use 25mm diameter main
bars.

Critical Moment,

2𝑠 = 2𝑧 + 𝑎
2 1.4 = 2 𝑧 + 0.5
𝑧 = 1.15 𝑚

Take moment at critical section (face of column),

𝑀𝑧 = 0]
−𝑀𝑧 + 𝑅1 𝑧 + 𝑅2 𝑧 = 0
−𝑀𝑧 + 907.143 1.15 (2) = 0
