Course Objective
This is an introductory course which aims to provide students with a general understanding of business
intelligence (BI) and the different career options and associated responsibilities of BI professionals.
This course will introduce the procedures for the execution of a BI project, various layers of a BI
architecture, and what career track one can choose to work on based on your areas of interest in a BI
project. Real world exams of BI projects will be presented. Industry leading tools and technologies
for BI projects will also be presented.

Course Intended Learning Outcomes (CILOs)


Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:

1. Describe the basic concepts and terminology of business intelligence (BI).


2. Describe the business objectives of BI.
3. Outline the assets required for BI to provide business value.
4. Describe the strategic impacts of BI.
5. Distinguish and relate contemporary technologies to BI.
6. Indicate the responsibilities of a BI professional.
7. Identify existing career opportunities in the area of BI.

All the additional course materials, including Lecture Notes in MS PowerPoint format, tutorial lab
materials, assignments, case studies, video cases, as well as important course announcements, are
available on the online webcourse (https://ummoodle.um.edu.mo). Students are strongly advised to
download and print out the lecture notes from their own webcourse before attending the classes. External
resources with hands-on exercises and case studies will be available in the webcourse.

Important Notes on Coursework


1) Individual Assignment:
a) Brainstorming with others is encouraged in the early stages of work. But, in the end, you
should Do Your Own Work!
b) Online assignments will be announced in classes and posted on the UMMoodle. Students are
required to login their own UMMoodle account, complete and submit the assignments online,
before the announced due date and time.
2) Final Project:
a) The cover page must clearly indicate: the course code, section number, case study topic, the
date of submission, and all the student details.
b) All work must be word-processed and from your own.
c) Poor grammar, organization, and presentation will affect the total mark.
d) Use full sentences and proper paragraphs. Neither verbose nor too lengthy answers should
be present. Write only relevant and concise answers.

e) Use only 12-pt Times New Roman font, 1.5 line-spacing, standard margins, include page
numbers, quality printing, and secure physical packaging (staple it!).
3) Neither E-mail nor late submission of assignments, exercises and project reports will be accepted!
All submissions must be submitted on/before the announced due date and time. Any late
submission will be graded ZERO.

Policy on Academic Dishonesty (Cheating)


ALL work submitted by any student MUST be his/her own work. Any form of plagiarism, straight
copying or re-wording from any source, constitutes Academic Dishonesty, i.e. cheating. If one is
unsure about his/her planned approach to work, please ask the instructor before doing the work. In any
case, cheating is an offense and ALL students involved will receive a ZERO (0) for that work. Midterm
Examination will be 100% CLOSED BOOK/NOTES, without any dictionaries or electronic devices of
any kind. University of Macau Student Handbook provides an “F” grade for students involved in
cheating. Other possible consequences include academic probation, a notation of cheating on your
university transcript, or dismissal from the university. You can refer the university policy regarding

Policy on Attendance and Leave Application


According to the University guideline, any student who is absent for more than 20% of the total
scheduled lecture time in the semester will NOT be permitted to take the final examination if no approval
is sought from the instructor. Then he/she will receive a failure grade “F” for the course. If this is a
compulsory course for that student, he/she will have to re-take the course. All kinds of supporting
documents and leave application should be submitted for approval no later than 10 days after a student’s
absence. Any leave application received after the mentioned period of 10 days will not be entertained.

Policy on the Adoption of Generative AI Tools

Students are permitted to adopt Generative AI tools to generate materials for background research and
independent study only.
