Course Materials: Calculus, Early Transcendentals, 8th edition, by James Stewart (optional but
recommended). A computer or tablet with a video camera and microphone.

Prerequisite and degree relevance: A grade of C- or better in M 408C, M308L, M 408L, M 308S or
M 408S. M 408D may not be counted by students with credit for both of M 408S and M 408M, nor
for students with credit for both of M 408L and M 408M. The two courses M 408C and M 408D are
required for mathematics majors, and mathematics majors are required to make grades of C- or better
in these courses. (Majors may also complete the equivalent sequences M 408N/S/M; or M 408K/L/M,
with grades of C- or better.)

Course Description: M 408D contains a treatment of infinite series, and an introduction to vectors
and vector calculus in 2-space and 3-space, including parametric equations, partial derivatives,
gradients, and multiple integrals.

Course Grade:
5% Pre-Assignments
10% Homework
10% Recitation Grade
5% Community Grade
70% Exams
Pre-class assignments (Learning Modules) (5%): These are short assignments that you will
complete before coming to lecture. They are the learning modules that you will find on Quest. The
pre-class learning module for a section will be due AT 9 AM on most MWF - before we start that
section in class. Sometimes there will be no LM due and sometimes there will be two. Your 4 lowest
Learning Module scores will be dropped.

ALL Homework ASSESSMENTS WILL UTILIZE QUEST (10%): This course makes use of the
web-based Quest content delivery and homework server system maintained by the College of Natural
Sciences. This homework service will require a $30 charge per student per class for its use, with no
student being charged more than $60 a semester. This goes toward the maintenance and operation of
the resource. Please go to http://quest.cns.utexas.edu to log in to the Quest system for this class. After
the 12th day of class, when you log into Quest you will be asked to pay via credit card on a secure
payment site. Quest provides mandatory instructional material for this course, just as is your textbook,
etc. For payment questions, email [email protected].

You will have one Quest assignment each week due on Mondays.

Recitations (10%): Each week you will be assigned a Worksheet that you will work on with your TA
in weekly discussions. You will submit these worksheets on Saturday via Gradescope. They will be
graded in part for correctness and in part for completion - SHOW WORK. Your grade for Recitation
will be based on attendance (5%) to recitation and weekly worksheets (5%)

Community Points (5%): There will be many opportunities to earn community points throughout
the semester. Points can be earned through class participation, posting complete solutions in ED
Discussion, In Class Polls, Offline Scavenging

Exam Redemption Policies (70%):


There will be three-semester IN PERSON exams - you can drop the lowest of the three.
If you miss an exam FOR ANY REASON, I will drop that exam - there will be NO make-up.
If you miss an exam FOR ANY REASON, you cannot drop an additional exam.

You can exempt yourself from the final exam but ONLY IF ALL THREE EXAMS COUNT.
If you miss a midsemester exam, you will not be able to take this option.
You cannot drop an exam and exempt yourself from the final.

You can let your final exam be your entire exam grade.
If your final exam grade is better than the exam average, you can let it be your exam grade.
Because of this policy, there will be absolutely positively no make-up exams.

No Extra Credit is given

Missed work policy: I do not accept late homework for any reason. This includes but is not limited
to, illness, late registration, family emergency, planned absences, university-approved absences. But fear
not! I will drop one or two HW assignments.

Student with Disabilities: Students who fall under the University’s Learning Disability Policy must
present certification of that fact to the student’s instructor prior to the first test. The University of
Austin provides upon request appropriate academic accommodations for qualified students with

academic dishonesty. I am well aware of the sites used for sharing materials, and any materials found
online that are associated with you, or any suspected unauthorized sharing of materials, will be
reported to Student Con- duct and Academic Integrity in the Office of the Dean of Students. These
reports can result in sanctions, including failure in the course.

Class Recordings: Class recordings are reserved only for students in this class for educational
purposes and are pro- tected under FERPA. The recordings should not be shared outside the class in
any form. Violation of this restriction by a student could lead to Student Misconduct proceedings.

Flag Statement: This course carries the Quantitative Reasoning flag. Quantitative Reasoning courses
are designed to equip you with skills that are necessary for understanding the types of quantitative
arguments you will regularly encounter in your adult and professional life. You should expect a
substantial portion of your grade to come from your use of quantitative skills to analyze real-world
problems. This course may be used to fulfill the math component of the university core curriculum
and ad- dresses the following three core objectives established by the Texas Higher Education
Coordinating Board: communication skills, critical thinking skills, and empirical and quantitative
skills.

Core Curriculum Student Competencies: This course is designed to:

• accurately manipulate and analyze numerical data using mathematical strategies.

• apply appropriate mathematical strategies to solve a given problem and assess the reasonableness of
the results.

• effectively express and communicate the results of problem-solving using appropriate mathematical

Please note: to ensure fairness, all numbers are absolute, and will not be rounded up or down
at any stage. Thus a B- will be inclusive of all scores of 80.000 through 83.999. The
University does not recognize the grade of A+
