CSS Training Guide during Assessment

COC 1: Install and Configure Computer System

How to pass the assessment of Computer Systems Servicing NC II?

To pass this assessment you need the following:

For Disassembly and Assemble PC:

A. Make sure you are knowledgeable about static electricity or ESD, why do I say
that? Because I see some candidates or students taking this for granted and the
result? The computer has been damaged and can't even boot in BIOS settings.
B. Make sure you are familiar in the connection of Front Panel LED's (Power/Reset
button, HDD Led, Power Led) in the motherboard because not all motherboard
has the same standard in connecting this wire(s). And take note some
ASSESSOR/S are very strict on this part, though your PC is working they will not
accept incorrect connection.
C. Be 90% calm and 10% nervous. Being nervous is really part of taking the
assessment., if you're not then good for you.

1. To complete the assembly of a new PC from start to finish, here's a list of every single
tool, piece of equipment, and component that you need:

Screwdriver/s: It's true; to build a PC from scratch, all you need for most
builds is a Phillips-head screwdriver. Specifically, you need one with a size #2 head,
but if you're installing an M.2 SSD you'll also need a size #1 (M.2 screws are
smaller). As for the length of the screwdriver, it doesn't really matter as you can use
either a short, medium, or longer screwdriver.

Suitable Surface: A large, flat, hard, non-conductive surface to assemble your

PC on such as a desk or table (wood or glass is fine).

A Way to Discharge Yourself: To protect your components being damaged

from static electricity when building a PC, you need to physically ground your body
before handling the internal parts. You can do so by wearing an ESD/anti-static wrist
strap/bracelet, or by periodically touching the bare (non-painted) metal frame of your
PC case or another metal object every now and then for a couple seconds (and
specifically before going to touch a part).

Enough Time: To learn how to build your first PC from start to finish, you
want to give yourself plenty of time as you'll be (or should be) taking it nice and
slow.

Motherboard Manual: The only manual you will likely need to build a PC
which comes in handy for certain things that are specific to your particular board
including where to connect your case's front panel connections and which RAM
sockets to install your memory.

Let’s Start!
Disassemble a Desktop Computer
A. Before Opening the system unit, turn-off the computer and unplug the AVR.
B. Remove all the cables from the system unit back panel.

C. Remove the Screws of the side cover opposite

where the ports located.
D. Remove the connectors and components inside the
system unit, according to the layout of the system case.
a. Data Cables (SATA)
b. 24 pin + 4 pin ATX
Power Connector
c. SATA Power Connector
d. Front panel connectors
e. Power Supply Unit
f. RAM
g. Optical Disk Drive
h. Hard disk Drive or SSD
i. Expansion Cards
j. Heat Sink
k. Processor (CPU)
l. Motherboard

Prepare Motherboard for out-of-case Installation (Assembly)

Now we've prepared the case, there are two different approaches you can take from
here when learning how to build a PC from scratch for the first time. You can either:

Build PC Outside Case: This involves installing some of your components (CPU,
cooler, RAM, M.2 SSD) onto the motherboard first before installing the
motherboard into the case.
Build PC Inside Case: With this method you fit the motherboard into the case
first and then install your components onto it.

Why You Should Install Parts Outside the Case First

It can be more difficult to reach in and install parts onto your

motherboard when it's mounted inside your case. Working on your motherboard
outside the case gives you much more room to move, makes it easier to see
where to install things like the CPU, and makes it easier to firmly insert your
RAM and CPU cooler (which can require a firm little push).
3

Assemble a Desktop Computer:

1. Install the processor in the CPU socket of the motherboard by following the correct
alignment of the processor in its place and also the heatsink and CPU fan. Use thermal
compound/paste if necessary.

2. Install/Mount the RAM/memory card to its module by aligning to its notch.

3. Install/Mount the motherboard inside the PC case, make sure it is aligned in its stand-offs
where you screw the motherboard. Use proper size screws.
4

4. Install/Mount the Expansion Cards (GPU/VGA card in the video card slot and LAN card in PCI
slot if you have, screw these cards properly).

5. Install the Hard Disk Drive (SATA/IDE) or Solid State Drive (SSD) inside the case then connect
it to the motherboard.

6. Install/Mount the CD/DVD ROM/RW (SATA/IDE) inside the case and connect it to the
motherboard.
5

7. Connect the front-panel LED’s (Power/Reset button, HDD Led, front USB port) in the
motherboard.

8. Install/Mount the Power Supply Unit, screw it properly then connect the 20/24 pins and 4
pins in the motherboard and the power connections for HDD, DVD and Floppy Drive if you
have.
6

9. Connect the peripherals (Monitor, Keyboard, Mouse, and AVR/UPS) to the system unit.

10. Last Check, Test the unit and Booting Your PC

We're done covering all the physical installation steps of how to assemble a PC, but before you
start up your machine for the first time there's a few extra steps and checks.

✓ Check Component Connections

✓ Check Front Panel Connections
✓ Connect Monitor and Peripherals
✓ Plug Power Supply to Wall (& Turn On system unit)

COC2: Setup Computer Network

Network Diagram:

Server PC Client PC

<Modular Box>

< Patch Panel

< Switch

< Wireless Router

1. Splice all the cable needed on the network diagram above.

a. Create Network Cables
- 5 Straight-through cables (PC’s to modular box, patch panel to
switch, then switch to wireless router,
- 1 Crossover Cable (If needed: to be used for PC to PC network)

How to Create an Ethernet Cable?

a. Prepare tools and materials.

b. Strip your cable. Use your

cable strippers at about 1-2
inches from the end of the cable
to remove the outer jacket.

c. Untwist the twisted pair wires

all the way back to the
jacket. This can be done just
like a regular twist-tie on a loaf
of bread, but with four of them
of different colors.
12

d. Align the untwisted wires

in the order necessary for
your needs. For this scenario,
you'll be making a straight-through
cable, which has both ends of the
cable with the same alignment of
wires, so it's easy enough to do.
Since this is your first cable,
we'll consult the sheet to know
what order we're aligning in!

e. Cut the extra wire. Once you've

untwisted the wires, you'll have a
superfluous amount of copper
wiring left; we don't need this much,
but it's good to have it in the
previous step to help in aligning the
colors properly. Use the wire-cutting
scissors to cut these off.

f. Push the remaining wires into

the RJ45 head. Be careful not to
bend the wires while pushing them
in or you run the risk of creating a
bad cable. You also don't want too
little or too much wire left in the
head; there's no definite length
necessary, but it's pretty obvious
to tell if there's too much cable or
not enough. A short length of the
jacket should be up the RJ45 head;
use this knowledge as a reference.

g. Double-check that the wires are

all the way up into the gold pins
of the head and made it up in
the proper order.

h. Push the head into the open

space of the crimping tool and
squeeze it closed, hard. If you
don't crimp the cable all the way,
the head may come off.
13

i. Open the crimping tool and

remove your newly-crimped
Ethernet connector.

j. Repeat the crimping process

on the other side of the cable
if you're making a completely
new cable. If you're repairing
one end, this won't apply to you,
so move on.

k. Plug one end of the cable into

the tan, two-port end of the
cable tester, and the other end
into the other part of the
tester with the graphic display
window. Turn it on and listen for
the beep. If it beeps once, you
successfully made an Ethernet
cable; if it beeps twice, some part
of the cable is messed up and
needs repairing. Depending on
the error, the cable may or may
not still be usable.

l. Plug your Ethernet cable

in. Now that you've made an
Ethernet cable all by
yourself, you can connect all
kinds of devices together! Of
course, for the cable you just
made, make sure they're
different devices! You can
connect to Xbox Live now, to
PlayStation Network, to your
wireless router, and many
more devices you don't even know about!
Configuring Patch Panel
Patch Panel - In a LAN, a patch panel
typically used in a commercial and
industrial building to structurally
attach every node within network
infrastructure.

Termination of Patch panel

a. Trim the cable to length base on
position or location.

b. Strip the cable 2 inches approximate.

c. Un-twist the wires completely.
d. Check the printed color codes inside the patch panel (T568A or T568B).

e. Sort/arrange the wires in its proper position according to the

T568A color code (See figure 6) if you are going to use
T568B(common) just interchange the position of green to
orange, white green to white orange and terminate the wires
to the blocks according to the instructions included with the
tool. Keep wire twisted to a maximum of 13 mm [.50 in.] from
the termination.
f. Choose a port on the patch panel before terminating.
g. Set the wires into the patch panel connectors.
h. Begin terminating each wire.

i. Used Punch down tool to firmly press down on each wire so that it is grasped by both sets
of teeth of the insulation displacement connector. Punch down tool with a cutting edge,
you can use it to cut the excess wire of the Ethernet cables during the pushing process.

j. Test the connection using a straight through cable and Cable LAN tester.
14

2. Setup Wireless Router Configuration (I am using TP link TL-WR841N)

>Access Wireless Router IP Address
a. Turn on TP-link wireless router
b. Connect TP-link wireless router to PC/Laptop using straight cable.
c. run command prompt or “cmd” on your computer
d. Type “ipconfig” hit enter
e. Look for the default gateway for Ethernet Adapter or Wireless
LAN Adapter IP Address: for example 192.168.0.1
f. Open web browser, for example: Internet Explorer, Chrome or Firefox
Visit https://tplinkwifi.net or Type 192.168.0.1, and log in with the username
and password you set for the router. The default one is admin (all lowercase)
for both username and password.

g. Wireless: Change Service Set Identifier (SSID) or Wi-Fi Name; and Change Wi-Fi Password

h. Wireless Security >

*Wireless Settings >Enable/Disable SSID Broadcast > save

*Wireless Security>WPA/-Personal (recommended) > wireless password > save
(Without authentication - no password) or (with authentication -with password)
Enable/Disable wireless security
15

i. Wireless MAC Filtering>

Wireless MAC Filtering is used to deny or allow specific wireless client devices to
access your network by their MAC addresses.
I want to:
Deny or allow specific wireless client devices to access my network by their MAC
addresses.
For example, you want the wireless client A with the MAC address 00-0A-EB B0-00-0B and the
wireless client B with the MAC address 00-0A-EB-00-07-5F
to access the router, but other wireless clients cannot access the router

How can I do that?

1.Visit http://tplinkwifi.net, and log in with the username and password you set
for the router.
2.Go to Wireless > Wireless MAC Filtering.
3.Click Enable to enable the Wireless MAC Filtering function.
4.Select Allow the stations specified by any enabled entries in the list to
access as the filtering rule.
5.Delete all or disable all entries if there are any entries already.
6.Click Add New and fill in the blank.

➢ Enter the MAC address 00-0A-EB-B0-00-0B / 00-0A-EB-00-07-5F in the MAC Address field.
➢ Enter wireless client A/B in the Description field.
➢ Select Enabled in the Status drop-down list.
➢ Click Save and click Back.
7. The configured filtering rules should be listed as the picture shows below.

Done!
16

i. Dynamic Host Control Protocol (DHCP) >

5. DHCP
By default, the DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) Server is enabled and the router
acts as a DHCP server; it dynamically assigns TCP/IP parameters to client devices from the IP
Address Pool. You can change the settings of DHCP Server if necessary, and you can reserve
LAN IP addresses for specified client devices.

5.1. DHCP Settings

1.Go to DHCP > DHCP Settings.
2. Specify DHCP server settings and click Save

DHCP Server - Enable or disable the DHCP server. If disabled, you must have another DHCP
server within your network or else you must configure the computer manually.

To use the DHCP server function of the router, you must configure all computers on the LAN as
Obtain an IP Address automatically.

j. Change wireless “Admin” Log-in username/password (optional)
