Stage 2 – Excel (Cleaning and Interpreting the data)


Due Date: 28 April 2023 (23:59pm) Marks: 35

Instructions:
In each of the tasks below, state the formula/feature used and the reason why. Refer to the Office Essentials dataset.
Using appropriate Excel formulas/features complete the following tasks (besides instruction 9):
1. Cleaning the data. Using the appropriate Excel feature, identify the inconsistencies in the data values within the Office
Essentials dataset. Correct the inconsistencies (e.g. spelling, formats, etc.) so all data values are consistent. All
monetary columns should appear as follows: R34.89 (set to 2 decimal places).
2. Make sure the correct formatting is included in the data set (all dates to follow, 14 January 2023 format)
3. Insert a new sheet, rename this sheet ‘Area’. Insert the following information into the Area sheet:
City and Postal Code (include the values for these columns from the Office Essentials dataset).
4. Find all duplicate entries in the Office Essentials dataset, insert screenshots of the duplicate entries into the Word
document and explain how these duplicate entries were corrected. In the Excel dataset, remove the duplicate entries.
5. Insert a new sheet in the Office Essentials dataset. Insert the columns, Product Category, Product Sub Category,
Product Name and Profit with values in the new sheet. Using relevant INDEX, MATCH, MAX and MIN functions
display Product Category, Product Sub Category, Product Name with the highest profit and lowest profit:

6. Refer to Office Essentials dataset, include a column ‘Total Amount’ and ‘Vat Amount’. Using appropriate formulas,
calculate the total amount of quantity ordered and insert the vat amount in the column ‘VAT Amount. (Use the standard
Vat amount of 15%):
7. Using the IF function write a formula that will return the name of the Manager once the Region is entered in a cell. This
formula can be created anywhere in the Users tab:

8. Using appropriate formulas return the total amount for each region (1 to 4) –The total amounts in proper currency
should be displayed for a particular region:

9. Provide a detailed explanation on how fraud could be detected in Excel data.

Documents to be submitted:
 A Word document (can be converted to PDF once completed), should include screenshots of relevant formulas and the
Excel data (if changed in any way), with a relevant explanation on what was done, why and what formula was used and
what changes to the data were made (instructions 1 to 9). Use the cover page template provided.
 Point 9 will be explained in the Word document and not a task to be completed in the Excel dataset.
 The Excel file (Office Essentials) with the completed instructions as stated (instructions 1 to 8).
