The Researchers

iv
CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

The background of the research study and the research statement are

discussed in this chapter. The scope and delimitation, significance of the

study and definition of terms are also highlighted.

Background of the Study

Across the world of rapid advancement of technology, the Al or Artificial

Intelligence has been invented. It plays a role in every individual especially the

students. Based on Chen (2020), artificial intelligence is a field of study and

the resulting innovations and developments that have culminated in

computers, machines, and other artifacts having human-like intelligence

characterized by cognitive abilities, learning, adaptability, and decision-making

capabilities. According to Alharbi (2023) ; Dale & Viethen (2021), AI-powered

tools offer valuable support in different aspects of writing academic essays,

such as language correction, grammar checking, and proofreading.

Nevertheless, while it gives us all a relief In the immediate research of

information, the influence of these technologies on students is undoubtedly

debatable.

Some students are getting more reliable to Artificial Intelligence (also

known as AI) in their studies to improve their written outputs and homework.

Students tend to feel more ease and less anxious when interacting with

ChatGPT, resulting in heightened motivation and a greater willingness to

participate in writing tasks (Shoufan, 2023). Students are increasingly using

iv
ChatGPT to improve their writing methods. These tools provide real-time

feedback, grammar correction and plagiarism detection. Due to these, their

critical thinking, problem solving and even writing skills are getting slowly

reduced. In fact, some study shows that being dependent to an AI helps

his/her grade increase, despite this positive effect; it lowers some of their

skills like creativity, writing skills, etc.

Looking ahead, Rudolph et al. (2023) suggested using flipped learning, in

which students are required to prepare for lessons by studying pre-class

materials. This instructional approach can free up class time for interactive

learning activities, such as group discussions. Chaudhry et al. (2023)

examined the implications of AI in plagiarism detection, stressing the need for

clear guidelines and educating students about AI’s limitations and proper use.

Therefore, Mhlanga [13] emphasized the importance of the responsible and

ethical use of ChatGPT.

Furthermore, according to Jowarder, M. I. (2023) ,ChatGPT had a positive

impact on the academic performance of the participants, particularly in

assisting them in understanding difficult concepts and providing them with

relevant study materials. According to Cotton et al.(2023), students who use

ChatGPT to generate high- quality work gain an unfair advantage over their

peers who do not have access to it. More importantly, instructors cannot

accurately evaluate student performance when ChatGPT is involved, making

it difficult to follow up on students’ learning problems.

iv
The uncontrolled use of AI has a great impact on students, which may

bring them harm. Since it can help increase their grades but it also reduces

some of their skills because of the reliance of AI. But it is not possible to say

whether students are lucky because of the invention of ChatGPT which

facilitates their acquisition of information for the immediate completion of their

school activities or whether they are unlucky because their knowledge skills

depend only in artificial intelligence and not training their own knowledge.

Statement of the Problem

The purpose of the study is to determine what are the influence of the

Artificial Intelligence om students writing proficiency in Taft National High

School for S.Y 2023-2024.

Specifically, this study need to answer the following questions:

1. What are the differences in writing proficiency between students at Taft

National High School who utilize ChatGPT and those who do not?

2. Are there any specific writing skills that show significant improvement

among students who regularly utilize ChatGPT compared to those who

do not?

3. What are the specific strengths and weaknesses identified by students

who utilize ChatGPT in their writing process, and how do these

compare to those students who rely solely on traditional writing

methods?

iv
Significance of the Study

The date collected in this study will most importantly be relevant in

understanding assessing the influence of ChatGPT on students writing

proficiency. The importance of the study can be viewed on the following

groups:

Students. This study can contribute the students assessing the influence of

ChatGPT on students’ writing proficiency can lead to more effective learning

outcomes, improved writing skills, and enhanced overall academic

performance.

Teachers. This study can provide insight for educators to develop more

effective strategies, empowering teachers to provide more effective

instruction, individualized support, and targeted interventions to enhance

students’ writing skills and academic success.

Parents. By assessing the influence of ChatGPT on students’ writing

proficiency, parents can actively support their child’s academic growth, foster

important skills, and engage in collaborative efforts to enhance their child’s

writing abilities.

Administration. This study will benefit the administration for having basis for

the future implementation or guidelines of programs that will help the situation

iv
of students assessing the influence of ChatGPT on students writing

proficiency.

Community. This study also will help the community engagement by raising

awareness about the influence of ChatGPT on students writing proficiency

and this study can foster advocacy, support within the community to address

their common issue among students.

Future Researchers. The next researcher may gain more information about

assessing the influence of ChatGPT on students writing proficiency. The next

generation researcher as a novice may take advantage in this study in the

future reference. For example, the researcher may need information about the

discuss topic, the researcher may apply this knowledge gathered.

Scope and Delimitations

The study covers selected students of every section on certain grade

level of Taft National High School, Brgy. 05, Taft, Eastern Samar. The

researchers focus on the factors affecting the reading comprehension skills of

the students. It started on February 17, 2020 and ended on March 13, 2020.

Definition of Terms

The following terms are operationally defined to enable the readers to

have a clearer understanding of the research:

iv
Reading Comprehension. The ability to comprehend written language is

referred to as this. It gives context to what is being read. It happens when

words become more than just that: thoughts and ideas.

CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY

This section presents a detailed discussion on the methods and

procedures that will be used in this study with particular focus on the:

research design, locale of the study, respondents / participants of the study,

research instrument, and data gathering procedure.

Research Design

This study uses qualitative approach in research. It is a process of

naturalistic inquiry that aims to comprehend social phenomena within their

iv
natural context. Specifically, the researchers adopted the single-case

exploratory case study design.

Respondents of the Study

The researchers will identify 160 random Junior High School learners

to collect their experiences and to determine the factors affecting their reading

comprehension.

Sampling Procedure

Cresswell (2008) suggested that between five to twenty-five (5-25)

participants are needed for a case study. Hence, the researchers will choose

fifteen (15) students as participants of the study through purposive sampling,

a non-probability sampling technique, wherein the representative of the

sample is based on a set of criteria set by the researcher.

Locale of the Study

The research locale of the study comprises of the place where the

study took place. The researchers will focus in Taft National High School

which is located in Brgy. 05 Poblacion, Taft, Eastern Samar.

Research Instrument

In this study a survey questionnaire will be used as the research

instrument. This questionnaire was designed into two series, wherein the first

part shows about the demographic of the respondents in terms of Names,

Gender, Age, and Grade and Section; the second part shows questions if they

iv
are having a hard time to comprehend what they are reading, how do they

rate their reading comprehension skills, and what are the factors affecting

their reading comprehension.

Data Gathering

Before gathering the data needed for the study, the researchers first

crafted the interview questions and a letter of request addressing the chosen

participants for an interview. After securing their permission, the researchers

and the participants set the venue, date and time of the interview according to

the participants’ preference.

Afterwards, they ensured the availability of the needed materials for

the interview and they also assigned each researcher a particular task to

accomplish. Since there are four (4) researchers of this study, two (2) of the

researchers facilitated the interviews, one (1) transcribed the interviewees’

answers and one (1) took charge in audio-taping the interviews.

During the conduct of the interviews, the facilitators requested for

permission from the participants to audio-record the dialogue. Then, through

consent form the participants were informed and oriented with the topic and

purpose of the study (See Appendix A). After that, the researchers asked

open-ended questions for the participants to answer. The researchers also

emphasized the participants’ freedom to decline or refuse to answer any

question viewed as personal and obtrusive. After obtaining the information

through the interview, the researchers proceed to the data analysis and other

parts of the study.

iv
Data Analysis

Thematic analysis was used in this study to examine the discussion in

the interview and its particular implications toward the research questions. It is

best thought of as an umbrella term for a variety of different approaches,

rather than a singular method. It highlights, pinpointing, examining, and

recording patterns (or themes) within data (Braun et al., 2006). Therefore,

Mhlanga emphasized the importance of the responsible and ethical use of

ChatGPT.

Furthermore, this study adapted the process suggested by Wargo

(2013) in conducting interviews for case study designs. First, the interviews

were conducted and audio taped. Then, the audio recordings were transcribed

and returned to the participants for their review and approval. Afterwards, the

researchers examined the information obtained by comparing the responses

of one participant and that of another using the thematic units approach. Next,

inferences will be drawn on the basis of coding or themes. Afterwards, the

recurring themes were presented through a graphic organizer accompanied

by the dialogues and documentations from the interviews.

Achieving the trustworthiness of the research process is difficult

(Nowell, Norris, White, & Moules, 2017) if the researcher is not clear on how

he analyzes the qualitative data. In this paper, the research anchored in using

trustworthy thematic analysis approach (Lincoln & Guba, 1985; Nowell, Norris,

White, & Moules, 2017).

Ethical Considerations

The participants of this study were assured that their identity and the

research data were treated with strict confidentiality. The names of the

iv
participants were kept anonymous by replacing their names with numbers

according to the order of their responses. Also, all the responses were deleted

after analyzing the data. Moreover, the participants were given the rights to

decline or refuse to answer any question deemed personal and intrusive. The

participants’ ideas and beliefs were respected and assured that this study will

not affect their life as individuals specially as students. Honesty was

exercised; hence, exaggeration and deception were avoided.
