What is a Blog?
A blog is a type of website that focuses mainly on written content, also known as blog posts. In popular culture, we most
often hear about news blogs or celebrity blog sites.
Bloggers often write from a personal perspective that allows them to connect directly with their readers. In addition, most
blogs also have a “comments” section where readers can correspond with the blogger. Interacting with your readers in the
comments section helps to further the connection between the blogger and the reader.
To be successful as a blogger there is really just one requirement: a passion for your topic. At its heart, blogging is about
sharing your knowledge with the world. Choosing a topic that you are passionate about makes the process of starting a successful
blog so much easier. Writing about more than one topic is totally fine too. As long as you are writing about things that you are
genuinely LESSON RECAP 8 interested in, your passion will shine through and keep your readers interested.

Why would you choose to do blogging?

1. Make money from home. Blogging can be quite lucrative if done correctly. The top bloggers in the world obviously earn quite a bit, but
even a part-time blogger can expect to make a nice profit if things are done correctly. The best part about it is that blogging is a form of
passive income since you can spend just a few hours a week writing a blog post and then continue to make money from it long after the
blog post is written.
2. Share your story. A blog allows you to have a voice and be heard. You can share your story with the entire world if you so choose. One of
the most common ways blogs are used are as a diary where the blogger writes about their daily experiences so that friends, family, and
others can all be a part of their lives.
3. Recognition for yourself or your business. No, you probably won’t have paparazzi following you around because of your latest blog post.
But a successful blog makes your idea into a reality, and can gain you a ton of recognition in your respective field. Many bloggers are known
as experts just because of their blogs, and some have even gotten book and movie deals based on their blogs.
4. Find a community. Blogging at its heart is interactive. You write a blog post and people comment on it. This is a great way to connect with
people who are interested in the same things as you are. Blogging allows you to teach these people based on your experience, and it gives
you the opportunity to learn from your readers as well.
What Are the Essential Elements of a Blog?
1. A Great Title .The title of your blog post is the absolute first thing that your readers will pay attention to and it is the thing that will
compel them to continue reading your blog article. Another attractive thing to your readers is to make your title a question. These will all
keep the interest of your readers and your title will entice them enough to want to read more. Another important thing to remember is that
you need to include your main keywords or key phrases in your title so that your content will rank high in the search engines.
2. A Compelling Summary .When it comes to rating the elements of your blog article, the title holds more importance than the summary
does. However, it is an excellent idea to include a short summary (one of two sentences) of your blog article. If your summary is very well
written, it will make your readers want to read more. It will give them enough of a taste to really want to take a bigger bite. It is well worth
the effort that it will take to write it and write it properly.
3. A Strong Opening Paragraph .Your opening (or leading) paragraph is critical to getting people to want to read the entire article. It is very
important that you remember to tell some of your story in your opening paragraph. People need to connect with you on a human,
emotional level and they won’t do that if you don’t share something human with them. Another good approach is if you ask them a
question (not a “yes” or “no” question). That is a clear demonstration that your readers’ opinions matter to you and people love to feel that
they are important and that what they have to say is held in high esteem.
4. A Call-to-Action. Once your readers have read your blog article, they need to have some way to interact with you. That is where the call-
to-action comes into play. Your call-to-action should tell your readers exactly what you want them to do (sign up for your newsletter, get a
free white paper, enter a contest, etc). You will be surprised at how many of your readers will be willing to do whatever you are asking them
to do.
5. Your Opt-in Form. Along with your call-to-action form, you may wish to supply your readers with an opt-in form. If people are willing to
opt-in to your business, you are totally justified about including them in your Emailing list or lists. After all, they are the ones who made the
decision to say yes and hence, supply you with contact information so that you can interact with them.
6. Tags and Categories. Every time you write a blog post, be sure to assign the most relevant category to it and tag the post with the
appropriate keywords. The reason that you do this is so that your readers can find you easily. Make sure not to put in too many categories.
You should use categories on only a few topics and use the tags to give effective descriptions.
7. Your biography. Your readers will want to know a little bit about you so you should provide information that they will find interesting and
that gives them an understanding of your human side. This will serve you well and they will want to forge a relationship with you.

Post-test. (10 pts.)

In a separate sheet, reflect on how blogging can be an act of community involvement.
