A grocery store is a type of retail business that focuses on selling food and

other related household items. According to Kotler and Keller (2016), grocery
stores are of great importance to the retail market since they provide
necessary items to customers with utter convenience. These shops range
from small family stores to large supermarkets, all of which require a
proficient accounting system to manage all business financial transactions,
stocking, and general business operations.

All accounting schemes, manual or automated, have the same goal in mind,
which is the proper capture and retention of the fiscal information. A manual
accounting system refers to a system of accounting where transactions are
recorded, processed, and reported into a hand written format with use of
ledgers, journals, and other documents (Weygandt, Kimmel & Kieso, 2019).
The almost effortless method of technology feels more inviting to the small
business owner, however, this is not a favorable solution as it is both
inefficient due to the human errors it produces and inaccuracies lacking the
technology. This approach of capturing and storing data is extremely efficient
as it provides a modernized way of using a computer software system to
input, save, and extract financial activities (Romney and Steinbart, 2021).

The Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) by Davis (1989) posits that

companies integrate automated systems depending on how useful and easy
to use they are. For this reason, several owners of grocery stores are moving
to automated accounting because of the accuracy, compliance to financial
deontologies, and the benefit of having real-time data processing. On the
other hand, some businesses especially on small scale mini municipalities
may still managed manually due to insufficient funds and low levels of
technical know-how.

This report seeks to assess the productivity and precision of manual and
automated accounting systems at some grocery stores within Mogpog and
Boac municipalities. It attempts to answer the question: Which of the two
systems, manual and automated, enhances the efficiency and performance of
the local grocery business in a municipality?
