6.

Instructions:
• Every student should write his/her name and Id. number by his/her own handwriting.
• Show all the necessary steps for each of the following problems.

Questions:
2x4 − 4x3 − 6x2
1. Discuss all the necessary steps and sketch the graph of f (x) = .
x4 − 3x3 − 3x2 + 7x + 6
2. Let f (x) = 3x2 + 4x + 2 and f (g(x)) = 12x2 + 20x + 9, find g(x).
3. Find the value of x, if 2x + 2x−1 = 3.
4. Find the distance between the lines l1 : x − y + 1 = 0 and, l2 : 2x − 2y = 3.
5. A line segment has ends (1, 5) and (−2, 4). Find the coordinates of the points that trisect the
segment.
6. Find the equation of the circle containing the points (1, 2), (2, −1) and (4, 5).
7. A cable of a suspension bridge hangs in the form of a parabola when the load is uniformly distributed
horizontally. The distance between two towers is 1500 ft, the points of support of the cable on the
towers are 200ft above the road way and the lowest point on the cable is 70ft above the roadway.
Find the vertical distance to the cable (parallel to the roadway) from a pole whose height is 122 ft.
8. Find the equation of an ellipse passing through (−4, 0) with foci at (0, 0) and (−1, 4).
9. Find the equation of the the hyperbola with vertices at (−5, 0) and (5, 0) and conjugate axis of
length 12.
10. Assuming that the following conic sections are not degenerate, classify the conic sections whose
Cartesian equations are
(a) y 2 − 4y + 16 = 4x2 + 8x
(b) 2x2 − 5xy + 3y 2 − x + y = 4
(c) 4y 2 − 4y + 28x + 29 = 0
(d) 4x2 + y 2 − 6x + 5 = 0
