Overview
The Ixia 5200 Series Net Tool Optimizer™ (NTO) directs network data from SPAN
ports and TAPs in your data center and forwards it to a convenient centralized tool
farm where multiple tools can share simultaneous access to the network data.
This document describes how to install the Ixia 5204/5236 Net Tool Optimizer, lists
the steps required to prepare the cabling and lists the procedures required to
properly maintain the unit.
The electrical hazard symbol indicates that the power supplies in your
system may produce high voltages and energy hazards, which can cause bodily
harm.
The pointer symbol indicates that the information that follows provides
helpful tips on how to use and configure the network emulator.
Carefully remove the contents of the shipping box. The shipping box contains:
■ Ixia 5204/5236 Net Tool Optimizer
■ AC power cord
■ USB flash drive (contains the Ixia 5204/5236 license key and
documentation)
■ Note that Cold Spare units will not be shipped with a USB flash drive
■ Rack Mount Kit
■ Redundant power supplies (if ordered)
Optionally, you may have ordered interface modules that support 10G CX4, 10G,
or 1G fiber ports or an Advanced Feature Module (AFM). Follow the instructions
below to install the AFM or interface module card.
Caution! The Ixia 5204/5236 must be shut down and the power (AC
and Auxiliary DC) must be disconnected from the chassis before
installing interface module cards. Installing a card while power (AC
or Auxiliary DC) is connected to the Ixia 5204/5236 chassis will
damage the card and void the product warranty. Interface module
cards are NOT hot swappable. If the unit has already been powered up
and needs to be shutdown before proceeding, see “Shut Down Using the
Front Panel Keypad and LCD” on page 7.
NOTE The Advanced Feature Module is not supported on the 5204 but is
supported on the 5236 model. Each installed Advanced Feature Module
(AFM) card will increase the 5236 power requirements by 25 Watts.
Note that the procedure for interface module card installation is the same for NTO
models 5204 and 5236.
1. At the rear of the unit loosen the screws and remove the plate covering the
Module card slot. If installing one card into the unit the card can be installed
into either the A or B slot.

For each ER/ZR transceiver that you use, leave a port unused, that is, only use
one in every other port of the 20 fixed SFP+ ports on the front of the 5236 and on
only one of the two ports on each AFM2 port module in the back of the unit. The
ER/ZR transceivers should be spread out evenly across the chassis to allow these
transceivers to dissipate heat. For every ER/ZR module plugged in, you should
see an empty SFP+ slot, which means you can only use half of the SFP+ ports in
the unit when using ER/ZR transceivers.
Because the 5236 has 20 SFP+ ports on the front and up to four (4) on the back
(two in each of two AFM2 port modules), when you use ER/ZR transceivers, the
maximum number of ER/ZR transceivers you can use in a 5236 is 12.
