Network and Tool Port Connections

The Ixia 5204/5236 supports up to 28 ports.

Ports designated through software as Network Ports are used to connect TAP
and SPAN ports to the 5204/5236.
Ports designated through software as Tool Ports are used to connect tools
such as data recorders and VoIP monitors to the 5204/5236.
Any licensed port in the unit can be designated as a Network Port or a Tool Port.
5204 Ports can be utilized in the following manner:

Figure 1-6. Ixia 5204 Ports

Ports 1-20, 10/100/1000 Mbps copper only.
Ports 21-24, 10/100/1000 Mbps copper or 1 Gig fiber (Dual Mode).
Ports A1, A2, B1, B2 (on the rear of the unit), 1 Gig SFP+, 10 Gig copper CX-4,10
Gig XFP or 10 Gig SFP+.
Rear ports require that an Interface Module card be installed in the unit. The unit
supports 2 cards (Module A and Module B). Each card supports two ports.
The Control Panel is used to designate whether ports 21, 22, 23 and 24 will
support copper or fiber. The ports are individually configured which would allow
for port 21 to be used for 1G Copper and port 22 to be used for 1G Fiber.
When using ports 21-24 in copper mode, connect Ethernet (RJ-45) cables to the
Ether ports.
When using ports 21-24 in fiber mode, connect fiber cables to the ports in the
Fiber Modules section of the front panel.
Only one media type can be supported per dual mode port number. For example,
when port 21 is configured to support 1G copper in the Control Panel, fiber
module port 21 cannot send or receive traffic.

Tip: Ensure that cables are only connected to the enabled copper or fiber
dual mode port.

5236 ports can be utilized in the following manner:

Figure 1-7. Ixia 5236 Ports

Network and Tool Port Connections

Ixia Net Tool Optimizer 5204/5236 Installation Guide 11
Ports 1-20, 1G (SFP) or 10G (SFP+).

* IMPORTANT

For each ER/ZR transceiver that you use, leave a port unused, that is, only use
one in every other port of the 20 fixed SFP+ ports on the front of the 5236 and on
only one of the two ports on each AFM2 port module in the back of the unit. The
ER/ZR transceivers should be spread out evenly across the chassis to allow these
transceivers to dissipate heat. For every ER/ZR module plugged in, you should
see an empty SFP+ slot, which means you can only use half of the SFP+ ports in
the unit when using ER/ZR transceivers.
Because the 5236 has 20 SFP+ ports on the front and up to four (4) on the back
(two in each of two AFM2 port modules), when you use ER/ZR transceivers, the
maximum number of ER/ZR transceivers you can use in a 5236 is 12.
