Assignment 2014 CEP

The document outlines assignments related to construction project management, including planning and scheduling steps, project network construction, critical path analysis, resource allocation, and PERT analysis for estimating project durations. It also discusses insurance clauses in construction contracts, causes and prevention of accidents in construction projects, and definitions of key safety terms. The assignments require practical application of project management concepts and calculations.

Assignment 1

1) Think of a construction project you participated in or observed. Write down the steps
involved in its planning and the steps involved in its scheduling (without much
specificity).
Step 1: Explain the project plan to key stakeholders and discuss its key components
Step 2: Define roles and responsibilities
Step 3: Hold a kickoff meeting
Step 4: Develop a Scope Statement
Step 5: Analyze project quality and risks
2) Prepare a bar chart for building in ground swimming pool. If you do not know the steps
involved, ask a practitioners or search for the information.
There are multiple possible answers.
After Design of Swimming Pool, we should select site location

Activities in Swimming Pool

A- Excavation of Earth
B- Construction of Swimming Pool Base
C- Steel Cage Reinforcement
D- Pump and Filter System for Swimming Pool
E- Concrete in Swimming Pool Construction
F- Waterproofing the Concrete Pool
G- Construction of Coping

Assignment 2
1) You are given the following information about a project consisting of six activities:

Activity Predecessors Estimated duration

A 5 months
B 1 months
C B 2 months
D A,C 4 months
E A 6 months
F D,E 3 months

a) Construct the project network for this project.

b) Find the earliest times, latest times, and slack for each activity. Which of the paths is a critical
path?
c) If all other activities take the estimated amount of time, what is the maximum duration of activity
D without delaying the completion of the project?
Solution
a) Project Network
Various paths in this network are:

1-2-5-6  14 months

1-2-4-5-6 12 months

1-3-4-5-6 10 months

Hence, Critical Path is 1-2-5-6 with the duration of 14 months. Now, duration of activity D can be
increased by 2 months at most. So, maximum duration of activity D without delaying completion of
project is 6 months.
2) For the following schedule, draw the network diagram, perform the CPM calculation,
mark the critical path, and complete the table

Activity Duration IPA ES EF LS LF TF FF

A 2 -
B 4 A
C 6 A
D 9 A
E 5 B
F 7 B,C
G 3 D,E,F

3) For the following network,

a. Draw the precedence diagram and perform the CPM calculations
b. Using bar chart allocate the required resources and then level your resources so that
you may not use more than nine laborers per day at any time.

Activity Duration (days) IPA Laborers

A 2 - 3
B 4 A 2
C 6 A 4
D 9 A 3
E 5 B 4
F 7 B,C 2
G 3 D,E,F 4

3) Based on the activities given below. Using PERT three estimate approach

Time Required
Optimistic Most Likely Pessimistic Immediate
Task Estimate Estimate Estimate Predecessors
A 3 weeks 4 weeks 5 weeks
B 2 weeks 2 weeks 2 weeks A
C 3 weeks 5 weeks 6 weeks B
D 1 weeks 3 weeks 5 weeks A
E 2 weeks 3 weeks 5 weeks B,D

(a) Find the estimate of the mean and variance of the duration of each activity.
(b) Find the mean critical path.
(c) Find the approximate probability of completing the project within 11 weeks.
Since probability of project completion on 11 weeks is more than 50%; Ato Abera ,
president of AK con Construction Company, should submit a bid contract to earn
250,000 birr profit.
4) List out and discuss insurance clauses of the harmonized FIDIC 2006 and PPA 2011
Condition of contract for works of Civil Engineering construction?
5) Discuss the cause of accidents in construction project and the method of preventing
accidents in the construction projects?
6) Give the definition for the following terms that are used frequently in safety concept.
 Injury
 Hazed
 Risk
 Hazardous materials
 Pollutant
 Pollution
 Environmental impact assessment (EIA)
