NTHU Electrical Engineering Department EE3150 Electromagnetic Waves Fall 2024 HW #7

The document outlines homework assignments for an Electromagnetic Waves course, focusing on various antenna calculations including radiated power, beamwidth, directivity, and radiation efficiency for different types of dipole antennas. It includes specific problems related to communication systems, such as microwave links and satellite communications, requiring calculations of power, gain, and distances. Additionally, it addresses radar technology, including volume resolution and pulse repetition frequency for automotive applications.

EE3150 Electromagnetic Waves Fall 2024

HW #7

1. Please use the total field expressions of a Hertzian dipole to find the radiated time-average power, and
compare it with the result using only the far-zone fields.

2. Please calculate beamwidth, directivity, and radiation resistance for a half-wave dipole antenna and
compare its properties with a Hertzian dipole antenna.

3. The normalized pattern function of an antenna is given by f(θ,φ)=sin2θcos2 φ for 0≤θ≤180° and -
90°≤φ≤90°, and is zero elsewhere. Please find (a) the direction of maximum radiation (b) directivity (c)
half power beamwidth in the x-z plane.

4. A Hertzian dipole antenna operates in the AM broadcast band at 1MHz. Assume the loss resistance of
the antenna is 83 mΩ, and the dipole length is 2 m. (a) Determine the radiation efficiency of the antenna
(b) What is the antenna gain in decibels? (c) What antenna current is required so that the antenna will
radiate 80 W? And how much power will the generator have to supply to the antenna?

5. A long range microwave communication system operating at a frequency of 20 GHz in free space uses
two identical antennas at the transmit and receive ends each having gain of 20 dB. For acceptable signal-
to-noise (SNR) ratio of the receiver, the received power must be at least 1μW. For the input power of
the transmitting antenna of 100W and ideal antenna matching and orientation conditions, please find the
largest separation between antennas such that the receiver SNR is still acceptable.

6. The antenna of a cellular telephone base station transmitter operating at a frequency of f=869 MHz has
a gain of G=10 dB. Assuming ideal antenna matching and orientation conditions, please find the required
input power of the transmitter in W in order for the power received by a mobile phone antenna with a
gain of G=2 dB at a distance 20 km to be at least PdBm=-60dBm.

7. The antenna at the earth station of a satellite communication link having a gain of 55 dB at 14 GHz is
aimed at a geostationary satellite 36500 km away. Assume that the antenna on the satellite has a gain
of 35 dB in transmitting the signal back toward the earth station at 12 GHz. The minimum usable signal
is 8 pW. (a) Neglecting antenna ohmic and mismatch losses, find the minimum satellite transmitting
power required. (b) Find the peak transmitting pulse power needed at the earth station in order to detect
the satellite as a passive object, assuming the backscatter cross section of the satellite including its solar
panels as 25 m2 and the minimum detectable return pulse power to be 0.5 pW.

8. A 10 GHz weather radar uses a 15 cm diameter lossless antenna. At a distance of 1 km, what are the
dimensions of the volume resolvable by the radar if the pulse length is 1 us?

9. A collision avoidance automotive radar is designed to detect 7the presence of vehicles up to a range of
0.5 km. What is the maximum usable pulse repetition frequency?
