Problem 1 6 Points

The motion function is given as

𝑋1
⎛ ⎞m 𝒆
⎜0.5((𝑋2 + 𝑋3 ) exp(𝑡) − (𝑋2 − 𝑋3 ) exp(−𝑡))⎟
𝒙 = 𝝋(𝑿, 𝑡) = ⎜ ⎟ 𝑖

⎝ 0.5((𝑋 2 + 𝑋 3 ) exp(𝑡) + (𝑋 2 − 𝑋 3 ) exp(−𝑡)) ⎠

1. Find the inverse motion function.
2. The material velocity field is given as
0

𝑽 (𝑿, 𝑡) = ⎜0.5((𝑋 2 + 𝑋 3 ) exp(𝑡) + (𝑋2 − 𝑋3 ) exp(−𝑡))⎞⎟ m/s 𝑬𝑖
⎝0.5((𝑋 2 + 𝑋 3) exp(𝑡) − (𝑋2 − 𝑋 3) exp(−𝑡)) ⎠
Find the spatial velocity field.

Problem 2 12 Points

a. Any physical quantity is of second order tensor or tensor of rank 2 if it follows the

tensor transformation 𝑨 = 𝑸𝑨𝑸T . The displacement gradient is a second order

tensor.

i. Use fundamental definition of 𝑯 = grad(𝒖) as the starting point to show

that 𝑯 is a second order tensor.

ME 223 Solid Mechanics II (Dr. Tarkes Dora Pallicity) Assignment III, WS 2025

ii. Use the transformation of basis vector 𝒆′𝑖 = 𝑄𝑖𝑗 𝒆𝑗 to show that 𝑯 is a

second order tensor without using its fundamental definition.

b. The Lagrangian description of the stationary displacement field for a body is given

by

(𝑋 2 + 𝑌 )
T

𝒖(𝑿) = ⎢ (3 + 𝑍) ⎤

⎥ 𝒆𝑖
⎣(𝑋 + 2𝑌 )⎦
2

i. Find the displacement gradient & deformation gradient at the point 𝑷 =

[1 2 3]𝑬𝑖 .

ii. Can you distinguish if the deformation field can be categorized to a large strain

or a small strain problem?

Problem 3 10 Points

Use this definition of the Green Lagrange strain tensor in Cartesian coordinates, solve

the following question

1
𝑬 = (𝑯 + 𝑯 T + 𝑯 T 𝑯)
2

Let an infinitesimal small line element with unit vector [𝒏] = (𝑛1 𝑛2 𝑛3 )T undergo

strain of e i.e., e is scalar quantity given as change in the length by initial length.

a) Prove that

1
𝑒 (1 + 𝑒) = 𝐸11 𝑛21 + 𝐸𝑦𝑦 𝑛22 + 𝐸𝑧𝑧 𝑛23 + 2𝐸𝑥𝑦 𝑛1 𝑛2 + 2𝐸𝑦𝑧 𝑛2 𝑛3 + 2𝐸𝑥𝑧 𝑛1 𝑛3
2
How would you arrive at unique value of e? If a plot was made 𝑒(𝒏), what

interpretations can you make out of this plot?

b) Consider the steady state displacement vector field

(𝑋 2 + 𝑌 )

𝒖(𝑿) = ⎛
⎜ (3 + 𝑍) ⎞ ⎟ 𝒆𝑖
⎝(𝑋 + 2𝑌 )⎠
2

Find out the axial strain of the infinitesimal line element equally inclined to the basis

at 𝑷 = (1 2 3)𝑬𝑖 using the expression obtained above. Use the definition of 𝑯.

c) Using the data from (b), what will be the percentage error in e, if the strain

calculation at this point were assumed to be small strain? Make necessary

assumptions.

Problem 4 5 Points

In a small strain framework, derive the expression for strain-displacement relationship

in the spherical co-ordinate system using a rotation matrix transforming a cartesian

basis to spherical basis. The gradient vector & displacement vector in spherical

coordinate system are given. The strain tensor can be computed by considering

symmetric gradient of 𝒖.
