Assignment- Polynomials

1. If one zero of the quadratic polynomial x² - 5x - 6 is 6, then find the other zero.

2. If both the zeros of the quadratic polynomial ax² + bx + c are equal and opposite in
sign, then find the value of 'b'.

3. If 1 is a zero of the polynomial p(x) = ax² - 3(a -1)x - 1, then find the value of 'a'.

4. If one root of the polynomial p(y) = 5y² + 13y + m is reciprocal of the other, then find
the value of ‘m’.

5. Find a quadratic polynomial with the sum and the product of its zeros as 1/4 and -1
respectively.

6. A real number α is called a zero of a polynomial f(x) if

a) f(α) < 0 b) f(α) > 0 c) f(α) = 0 d) f(α) ≥ 0

7. The graph of a quadratic polynomial x² – 3x – 4 is a parabola. Determine the opening

of parabola.

8. The graph of y = p(x) is shown in the figure below. How many

zeros does p(x) have? Write its zeros also. What can you say
about the degree of this polynomial?

9. The coefficient of x and the constant term of a linear

polynomial are 5 and – 3 respectively, find its zero.

10. If the polynomial p(x) is divisible by (x – 4) and 2 is a zero of p(x), then write the
corresponding polynomial.

11. If α and β are zeros of the polynomial 2x² – 5x + 7, then find the value of α-1 + β-1.

12. The sum of zeroes of a quadratic polynomial is 8 and their product is 12. Find zeros
of the polynomial.

13. Find the zeros of the following quadratic polynomials and verify the relationship
between the zeroes and the coefficients:
a) 3√3x² - 19x + 10√3
b) x² - x - 72
c) x² - 7
14. Form Quadratic Polynomials whose zeros are:
a) -√2 and √2
b) 3 and 1/5

polynomial whose zeros are 1/2α and 1/2β.

17. Radha tells her friend that her age in years is equal to the sum of the squares of the
zeroes of the polynomial x² + 8x + 4. Further Radha asserts that after 2 years her
age in years will be the product of the zeros of the polynomial x² + 14x +20. Find
Radha's age according to two statements. Is Radha telling a lie? Justify your answer.

18. If α and β are zeros of a quadratic polynomial ax² + bx + c, then find the value of

a) α² + β²
b) α²β + αβ²
c) α³ + β³
