1.State Pascal’s law of fluid pressure. With a suitable diagram, explain how is
Pascal’s law applied in a hydraulic lift.
3.(a) Explain how does a body attain a terminal velocity when it is dropped
from rest in a viscous medium.
5. State and prove Bernoulli’s theorem and write its two applications.
10. A horizontal pipe line carries water in a streamline flow. At a point along
the pipe where the cross sectional area is 10 cm 2 , the water velocity is 1ms
−1
and the pressure is 2000Pa. What is the pressure at another point where
the cross-sectional area is 5cm2 ?
(a) The angle of contact of mercury with glass is obtuse, while that of water
with glass is acute.
(b) Water on a clean glass surface tends to spread out, while mercury on the
same surface tends to form drops. (Put differently, water wets glass while
mercury does not.)
(d) Water with detergent dissolved in it should have small angles of contact.
13. What is the pressure inside the drop of mercury of radius 3.00 mm at
room temperature? The surface tension of mercury at that temperature (20
°C) is 4.65 × 10–1 N m–1. The atmospheric pressure is 1.01 × 105 Pa. Also, give
the excess pressure inside the drop.
14. What is the pressure on a swimmer 10 metre below the surface of a lake?
16. Two Mercury drops one of radius o1mm and other of radius 2mm
coalesce to form a single drop. Find the energy released if the surface
tension of the Mercury is 5.44 x 10-1 N/m.
17. Derive ascent formula for the rise of a liquid in capillary tube and discuss
the result obtained.
19. A hose placed on the ground has water emerging out with a speed of 6.0
m/s. When the hose is lifted so that it's nozzle is at a height 1.5m above the
ground, with what speed will the water emerge out?
20. Speed of water is found to increase from 1.96 m/s to 25.5 m/s in flowing
from one end of a pipe to the nozzle. If the absolute pressure of the nozzle is
1.013 x 105 Pascal, Find the pressure at the end of pipe.
