CHAPTER ix
Preface

About MSC Software

Overview
MSC Software Corporation is the leading global provider of virtual product development (VPD) tools,
including simulation software and professional services. MSC Software helps companies make money, save
time, and reduce costs associated with designing, testing, producing, and supporting manufactured products.
MSC Software works with thousands of companies worldwide, in hundreds of industries, to develop better
products faster by using information technology, software, and services to enhance and automate the product
design and manufacturing process. Simulating your product performance reduces development costs, time
to market, and warranty costs.

About Virtual Product Development and Adams

You’ve heard it before: manufacturing companies today face intense global competition, demanding
customers, fragmented markets, increasing product complexity, compressed product cycles, price and profit
pressures, strict regulatory and liability environments, systems integration and supply chain issues,
skyrocketing costs of testing and physical prototyping, and on and on…
What you don’t often hear, though, is a strategy for enabling your company to improve your new product
development process to meet these challenges.
Whether you are delivering airplanes, automobiles, ships, biomedical devices, golf clubs or children’s toys to
your customers, MSC Software’s goal is to help you improve your new product development process,
allowing you to be significantly better at your concept development, design, testing, and production activities
through the application of VPD.
VPD is an environment that uses an integrated combination of both simulation software technology and
traditional techniques to design, test, manufacture, and support products. The result is that cost-effective
designs that meet all performance, safety, durability, and reliability requirements can be brought to market
in less time and for less cost.
Adams, as part of VPD, is focused on enhancing your ability to make better product development decisions,
explore innovative design alternatives, and consistently get the product right. It is the world's most widely
used mechanical system simulation software. It enables you to produce virtual prototypes, realistically
simulating the full-motion behavior of complex mechanical systems on your computers and quickly
analyzing multiple design variations until an optimal design is achieved. This reduces the number of costly
physical prototypes, improves design quality, and dramatically reduces product development time.

 Migration to Python 3 as of 2018.0

 Known Issues

Ubuntu Linux Support for Standalone Solver Scenarios

While Ubuntu Linux is not a supported platform across all MSC products, with this release of Adams some
Adams products support it. Standalone Adams Solver simulations, including those that use Adams Controls
and/or Adams Car Solver extensions are supported on Ubuntu Linux versions 16.04 and 18.04. The Adams
installer for Red Hat 7.3 should be used for either of these Ubuntu versions. There continues to be no
support for Ubuntu in any other Adams products, including all those with a graphical interface.

Required Upgrade to MSC Licensing Helium as of Adams 2020.0

Users who wish to use Adams 2020.0 or later versions must update their license servers to use MSC Licensing
Helium (this version uses Flexera FlexNET v11.16.3.0). The previous release of MSC Licensing FLEXlm is
version 11.13 and is what users working on Adams 2018.0 and more recent prior versions have been running.
Those and other older versions of Adams will be supported on MSC Licensing Helium as well.

Note: It is possible to have multiple versions of MSC Licensing co-existing for those organizations
unable to redirect older versions of Adams to MSC Licensing Helium for some reason.

Migration to Python 3 as of 2018.0

Beginning with Adams 2018.0, Adams has moved from Python 2 to Python 3 (specifically version 3.6.6 now
in 2020). There are some changes in the Python language that render some Python 2.X syntax nonfunctional
in Python 3.X. For details visit https://www.python.org/. The contents (classes, methods) of the Adams Python
Interface are already Python 3 compliant. However, when authoring Python code around those classes and
methods one should be advised that if it is not Python 3 compliant then it will not function when imported
into later releases of Adams. Further advice related to making this migration can be found on SimCompanion
at: https://simcompanion.mscsoftware.com/infocenter/index?page=content&id=KB8023252

CHAPTER 1 7
What’s New

Aggregate Mass Enhancements

Two enhancements to the aggregate mass capability are available in this release.
First, an aggregate mass calculation can be accessed directly from the model browser's right-click menu. So,
for example, you can multi-select a number of parts, right-click for Aggregate Mass and the information
window will display the results of the calculation. As in previous releases, the Aggregate Mass dialog
continues to be accessible from the Tools - Model Diagnostics menu. It remains helpful when you want to
specify a specific reference frame in which to report the aggregate center-of-mass and inertia tensor.
Secondly new in this release, when no reference frame is specified, the aggregate mass calculation will provide
the inertia tensor not only about the global origin, but also about the newly calculated aggregate center-of-
mass location and orientation as well as about the newly calculated aggregate center-of-mass location but in
the global orientation.

FE Part Preload
In previous releases the Adams FE Part could only be in an unloaded, un-deformed state in the model's design
position (that is, prior to simulation). Starting with this release of Adams, the FE Part permits the
specification of a preload.
Because of its nonlinear nature, the preload specification for an FE Part is not as simple a applying a single
scalar value like one would do for a linear spring, for example. The path by which an un-deformed, unloaded
FE Part becomes deformed and loaded matters. So, to specify a preload for an FE Part, a user must begin with
a model in which the FE Part is in its unloaded state. Then, the user must model and simulate the loading
event. After the loading event's simulation is complete the “Save Model at Simulated States” capability can
be used to create a new model whose design condition represents the end of the loading event's simulation
(or any output time step of it, for that matter). This new model will have the FE Part in a preloaded
configuration. Below shows the “Save Model at Simulated States” button and dialog on the Simulation
Control dialog.

The FE Part in the new model refers to a preload file. The preload file (.mtx extension) is automatically
created during the save-model-at-simulated-states action and stored in the working directory. The preload file
contains all the information necessary to define the preloaded condition of the FE Part. The FE Part wizard
in Adams View now has a field in which the preload file is referenced.
CHAPTER 1 37
What’s New

Because the preload file is specific to the particular FE Part definition used in the loading simulation, its new
(preloaded) shape, and the means by which it got there; it can only be applied to FE Parts of the exact same
definition and exact same preloaded shape. So, users will find it most convenient to simply use the FE Part
from the new model created via the save-model-at-simulated-states action.
Also because the preload file is specific to the particular FE Part definition (that is, its shape, nodes, material
and sections), there is little that can be modified about a preloaded FE Part. Only the damping terms and
the rendering parameters (faceting and external geometry) can be modified.

FEMDATA Support for FE Part

The FEM Data object has been extended in this release to support reporting of stress and strain on an FE
Part at both marker locations and at hotspots. Previously, FE Part stress and strain could only be generated
via the Adams Durability plugin. Two new options were added to the Type field in the Create FEMDATA
dialog box, Stress on FE Part and Strain on FE Part.
38 Adams 2020 FP1 Release Guide
Adams View

When a simulation is run, the FEM Data object causes a file to be generated with the specified quantities if
the Durability Files Output Category menu for Strain or Stress is set to a particular file format in the Solver
Settings Dialog box. For example, set Strain format to RPC to output strain time histories on FE Part
locations to RPC file for FEM Data objects of type Strain, So, use cases not involving Adams View and/or
Adams PostProcessor are enabled by this capability because the FEMDATA statement in the .adm now
supports FE Parts.
CHAPTER 1 39
What’s New

Location and Orientation Fields on FE Part Wizard

A set of location coordinates and orientation angles can now be specified in Adams View for an FE Part.
Previously, users could only re-locate/re-orient FE Parts via the interactive move tools within Adams View.
These new location and orientation fields are supported in the Adams View command language and Python
language and they manifest themselves in the Adams Solver dataset (.adm file) as QG and REULER
arguments.
40 Adams 2020 FP1 Release Guide
Adams View

FE Part Initial Velocity Scripting

Prior to this release, the initial velocity of the FE Part could not be set in Adams View With this release of
Adams the FE Part Preload capability is one new means to set the initial velocity of an FE Part because it will
be set when saving the model's simulated states after a preload simulation. But, users can also set the initial
velocity of an FE Part directly via the Adams View command language and the Adams Python scripting
language. It can be set uniformly for the entire FE Part or on a node by node basis. See the product
documentation of the Adams View command language and Python language for details.
For the Adams View command language, see the following commands:
 part modify fe_part initial_velocity
 part modify fe_part nodal_ics
For the Python scripting language see:
 The object Part - FEPart
 The method fep.modifyNode
CHAPTER 1 41
What’s New

Temporary Settings Sweep

In Adams 2020 the temporary settings file was introduced. It serves as a means to specify a set of Adams View
model parameter values and/or Adams Solver settings that can then be applied temporarily for a given
simulation with the model reverting to its baseline configuration immediately after the simulation. In Adams
2020 FP1 a new multi-run simulation capability, the Temporary Settings Sweep, is introduced allowing users
to specify a series of simulations each defined by the baseline model and one or more temporary settings
file(s). This multi-run simulation is made available through the Design Evaluation Tools dialog and is a new
option alongside Design Study, DOE and Optimization. For the Temporary Settings Sweep, there is a table
to specify the temporary settings files to be applied for each run (trial). The post-processing behaves much
the same as the design evaluation options, design study, DOE and optimization. For the Temporary Settings
Sweep, the objective can be plotted and reported against each of the trials.
42 Adams 2020 FP1 Release Guide
Adams View

Aggregate Mass Enhancements

Two enhancements to the aggregate mass capability are available in this release.
First, an aggregate mass calculation can be accessed directly from the model browser's right-click menu. So,
for example, you can multi-select a number of parts, right-click for Aggregate Mass and the information
window will display the results of the calculation. As in previous releases, the Aggregate Mass dialog continues
to be accessible from the Tools menu. It remains helpful when you want to specify a specific reference frame
in which to report the aggregate center-of-mass and inertia tensor.

Modify Objects Partially within a UDE Definition

Last release Adams View introduced a set of interactive User-Defined Element (UDE) authoring tools. This
release there is an extension to the capability of those tools. Users can now modify UDE Definition objects
that cross the line between the UDE Definition and the rest of the model. For example, a joint whose I marker
belongs to a part inside the UDE Definition and J marker belongs to a part outside the UDE Definition. Such
objects previously could not be modified (for example, to change the type of the joint). Now, this is allowed.
CHAPTER 1 43
What’s New

That said, it is generally recommended to create UDE Definitions with total separation between their objects
and the rest of the model.

Mixed Language Scripting in Adams View

Adams View has long had its own scripting language, the Adams View command language. Starting in
Adams 2017, a Python scripting API was introduced for Adams View as well. Now in this release, Adams
View supports mixed language scripts so that a mix of Adams View command language and Python
commands can be executed from a single imported .cmd file or from the execution commands of a dialog
box. Furthermore, the aview.log file captures both Adams View command language and Python and provides
a clear indication when switching between the two was done.
The Adams View command "language switch_to python" will switch from cmd to Python.
In Python one can switch to cmd via "Adams.switchToCmd()".
As for the Command Window interface, there is no change in behavior from previous releases. The scripting
language set in the command window (via the cmd/py option menu) applies only to the commands that are
executed from the command window. It does not become the active scripting language for the entire session.

ADMS-23940 If you export an Adams model to CEI Ensight via the co-animation export
capability and that model contains a flexible body, and the flexible body
doesn't use the same length units as the model itself, the resulting bodies in
Ensight will not be scaled or located properly. A workaround is to scale the
flex body in Ensight.

To start a product from DOS shell in Windows:

 Start → Programs → Adams 2020 FP1 → Command Prompt.

 An alternative is to add the /bin directory under the Adams installation directory to your user
PATH environment variable. You can do this via the Control Panel:
a. Type environment in the Control Panel search box.
b. Select the Edit environment variables for your account pick.
56 Adams 2020 FP1 Release Guide
Starting Adams Products

 Check to see if you already have a PATH variable defined under “User variables”. If it exists then
edit it, add a semicolon “;” to the end of the existing value, and then add the “bin” directory under
the Adams installation directory. Otherwise select New..., use PATH for the variable name and add
the “bin” directory under the Adams installation directory as the value. The default location of this
directory is:
Windows Adams:
C:\Program Files\MSC.Software\Adams\2020_1\bin

 Once you are done click OK.

Note: Windows appends your User PATH to the System PATH environment variable, so there is
no need to copy the existing System PATH variable to your user PATH variable. This
behavior is unique to the User PATH variable. For all other environment variables, a User
variables definition overrides a System Variables definition.
