Assignment 1

The assignment focuses on designing a Buck converter with specified ratings, including input and output voltages, rated power, and switching frequency. It involves calculations for output capacitor and inductor values, semiconductor device stress analysis, MATLAB/Simulink simulations, and deriving transfer functions. Additionally, it requires designing a voltage controller with an inner current controller and simulating the system's response to load changes and voltage perturbations.

Assignment 1

Switched Mode Power Conversion

1. Consider a Buck converter of the following rating:

Input voltage 72 V
Output voltage 48 V
Rated Power 1 kW
Switching frequency 30 kHz

a. Assuming an output voltage and inductor current ripple determine the values of
the output capacitor and inductor values. [1]
b. Determine the voltage and current stress of the semiconductor devices to be used
for realizing the buck converter with proper justification. [1]
c. Simulate the Buck converter in MATLAB/Simulink. Compare the designed output
voltage and inductor current ripple obtained from the simulation and that assumed
in (a). [2]
d. Derive the output voltage to duty and inductor current to duty transfer function
using state space modelling of the converter. [6]
e. Design the outer voltage controller with inner inductor current controller, to
regulate the output voltage. Design the controller such that the inductor current
never exceeds the rated current. The bandwidth and phase margin for which the
controllers are designed should be assumed as per the specifications of the
converter provided. Show the following simulation results: [10]
• Show the output voltage, voltage controller output, inductor current and
output current for change in output load from 50 % to 100 % and 100 % to
50 % of the rated load.
• Provide perturbations in the output voltage reference to validate the
designed closed loop voltage controller.
