1. A disk of radius R rotates at an angular velocity Ω inside a disc-shaped container filled with oil of viscosity
µ, as shown in Fig. 1. Assuming a linear velocity profile and neglecting shear stress on the outer disc edges,
derive a formula for the viscous torque on the disk.

2. A thin plate is placed between two flat surfaces h apart such that the viscosity of liquids on the top and
bottom of the plate are μ1 and μ2, respectively. Determine the position of the plate from the top such that the
viscous resistance to uniform motion of the plate is minimum.
3. During the flow of a non-Newtonian fluid it is observed that the velocity distribution within the fluid film
can be expressed by
𝑦 1
𝑢 /𝑢𝑚𝑎𝑥 = 2 - (𝑦/ℎ)3
ℎ 2
where h is the film thickness and 𝑢𝑚𝑎𝑥 the maximum velocity, y is measured from the solid surface. The
viscosity of the fluid is 0.5 N-s / m2 and n = 1.3. Calculate the shear stress at the solid surface when 𝑢𝑚𝑎𝑥 =
0.4 m /s and h = 10 mm. What should be the viscosity of a Newtonian fluid to induce the same shear stress
value for similar velocity profile and the same maximum velocity.
4. Two discs, 200 mm diameter, are mounted coaxially. They are separated by a uniform film of oil 0.12 mm
thick. Ignoring the edge effects, determine the torque necessary to rotate one disc relative to other at a speed
10 rev / s, if the oil has a viscosity of 0.17 Pas.
5. The specific gravity and the dynamic viscosity of a liquid are 13.6 and 0.002 N-s / m2 respectively.
Calculate its (a) density and (b) kinematic viscosity.
where u is the velocity is m /s at a distance of y m normal to the plate. If the dynamic viscosity of fluid is
1.6 Ns / m2 , determine the shear stress at y = 0 m and y = 0.1 m.
7. A 10 cm diameter shaft rotates at 1000 rpm in a 10 cm long journal bearing of 10.05 cm internal diameter.
The annular space in the bearing is filled with oil having dynamic viscosity 0.1 N-s / m2 . Estimate the
power dissipated as heat.
8. A solid cone of angle 2ϴ, base r0, and density 𝜌c is rotating with initial angular velocity ɷ0 inside a conical
seat, as shown in Fig. 4. The clearance h is filled with oil of viscosity μ. Neglecting air drag, derive an
analytical expression for the cone’s angular velocity ɷ(t) if there is no applied torque.
